I have been waiting to hear from Upenn for a couple of months now. At first it said "Your file has been reviewed but the committee has deffered a decision at this time. Your file will continue to be reviewed until March 2006." (or something like that) It was like that for about a month and now it says:

"Your application continues to be reviewed but there is no change in your status. Reviews will continue until March 2006."

Is Upenn one of those schools that keeps every file open and never sends out rejections (like NYU) even though they have no intention on giving out an interview to a particular person?

Does that sound like a pseudo rejection? Like will I forever be in the review stack and there will be no change either way?

it's not 100% guarantee of rejection. but they're more or less saying, unless our applicant pool is significantly worse than it has been in previous years, we're not reaching into YOUR pile for interviews.

what do you think I can do to get out of that pile? will sending updates work? I started this new job, which is pretty much guaranteed to get me published in JAMA or NEJM (knock on wood) but I didn't start until all my secondaries were in. I was hoping that would help.

You can try sending an update letter... I did, after I got the first deferred decision notice, and then after I sent the letter I still ended up getting the second deferred decision notice. I think it's pretty late in the game for most non-rolling schools to be sending out invites, so I wouldn't count on getting one at this point.

Yeah, I'm glad I decided that I was rejected when the first status change said that a decision had been deferred or whatever. I haven't even thought about Penn since then 🙂

It's speculation, but again, it's getting pretty late in the game to get an interview, especially if they've already passed over your application twice (which I'm assuming is why they've changed the deferred msg). But I don't think anyone actually knows, and I don't think UPenn is going to flat out tell you you've been rejected if you call, even if you have. But they don't send out rejections until March, so we won't know for sure until then.

I am with everyone, we have to just FACE it and accept it.
It is a REJECTION.
But hey, if you wanna hope, I wish you a lot of luck.

Dude, it's the moderator who GOES to Penn that says an interview defer = reject, especially this late. You can hope until March if you want, but reality isn't going to change by the power of positive thinking.

I don't know if this helps, but the last interview day at Penn is Feb 8 (as far as I can tell). I'm not sure whether they hold additional interviews if they decide it's necessary. That being said, I was granted an interview yesterday for a school asking me to come this Monday (Jan 31). I ended up scheduling for Feb 6-7, and their last date is Feb 14, so all hope is not lost. I had given up on them.

I'm in the same boat. Not sure when Upenn's interview season ends. But if they said review continues till March then maybe they mean just that. If they not gonna interview why review. Anyway while I wont dwell on Upenn I haven't given up hope yet until I see a rejection letter or until after March.

Actually the reall question prolly should be:" Has anyone at all been rejected from Upenn this season?". If no one has then yeah this deferrement is probbaly their way of waiting till the last minute otherwise it might not be as bad as we think. Hey all I can do is try to be positive --

Since UPenn is non-rolling, ALL decisions go out in March - acceptances, waitlists and rejections.

Thats interesting, that brings us right back to the question of whether that notification means rejection in a nice way, or if they will actually review again.

Ok so I called and asked what that notice meant. She said that it probably means that it will not be reviewed again. I asked her what it would be the deciding factor of whether files with that notice would be reviewed again, and she said that she honestly does not know.

Its sad, but I think that puts the issue at rest

Sounds like what happened to me last year. The only change I ever saw on my status page was from "complete" to "Application Status: Not Accepted

Knowing what I know now makes me wonder if they ever even looked at my application.
