"Please list any additional predental experience not included in your AADSAS application. This experience can include but not limited to observation in a private practice, dental clinic, or hospital setting; dental assisting; dental laboratory work; dental research, etc. Please include time allotted to each activity, dates of attendance, location, and description of your experience. If you do not have any predental experience, please indicate what you plan to do in order to explore dentistry as a career prior to matriculation."
This prompt is pretty weird. Most people should have indicated every clinical experience in the primary application (I do). Should I just leave this part blank?

This is why I think more hours of shadowing are required....

As a dental assistant I have had many years of hands on experience and a lot of pt communication.

100 hours requirement is very little that is 2weeks of working full time.

What a person sees/experience during these weekly hourly windows of shadowing, really does not show the full scope of daily life of dentistry...

But to answer your question:

Just be honest

write what you did, dental related

Write about what experience(s) you remember most and why.

Write about what you learned

Write about the patient flow(paper work, x-rays, consultation)

Write about the instruments
Did you have a favorite? Why?

Write about your feelings when entering the office.

Don't talk about your favorite instruments, paperwork, etc. That's not what they want to hear about. Just expand upon and elaborate more about your experiences here and what you learned/gained from them.

Why not talk about instruments?

Dental instruments are the tools of the trade. Explorer, the name is perfect for its purpose!

Paper work why not? The importance of pt medical history is vital.

GJMeig, I will consider you as someone who has only shadowed the minimum to less than 200 hours of dental.

What do you do for work?

And as a student, do you not have a favorite sections within your textbook?

Considering you want to keep it concise, going into detail about these things is unnecessary. Not saying they're not vital to the practice, just not vital for this supplemental response. Don't know what your other questions have to do with this, but I will be attending UPenn in less than two weeks, so I have some experience with their application process.

Write about specific clinical experiences, and which were your favorite procedures.

In this section, I personally would not waste time going on about what I learned. It's completely boring, and in the off chance they read the whole thing, you want it to be unique.

Tell them a story that shows that you are truly interested and committed to the Dental profession.

This has been answered before, you can either write a sentence stating that you've already mentioned everything in your AADSAS app or expand on your experiences in those roles.

I have a quick question about length of the supplementary essay. My essay is about one page with single space. Do you think it's too short? how long was your essay?

Just for that one question? Depends on how much you really think is necessary to portray. For me, I probably wrote about 2 pages, single space for all three questions total, so about 2/3 a page for each question.

I liked the diamond encrusted drill bit the best.

Seriously tho, if you have nothing left to add or elaborate on just say that "as of the submission of this application all dental related experience is in the AADSAS application."

And mine was between 3/4 - 1 full page. Short and quick to read is the best way to do it. They have thousands of applicants so making their lives slightly easier by having them read less while still having as much information possible in it is the way to go. As long as it is under 2 pages you shouldn't worry about making them groan at seeing the number of pages you typed up.

thank you so much for your reply.. I guess I wrote it too concise.

Probably too long...

I guess my question was too ambiguous. what I mean was I include all four questions in a one page... I forgot to mention about this!! sorry

That should be fine. Mine was about 2 pages including the prompts, spaces between, and indented answers. Length really isn't the concern here.

I know this thread is a bit old but I'm having a similar issue now. The prompt now says, "Do not include, expand, or repeat information submitted on your AADSAS application in the Dentistry/Shadowing experience section." So now I am completely stumped...any help would be much appreciated!

Just say all of your experiences are listed in AADSAS. You aren't required to answer this question/add more down.

Quick clarification: it is inappropriate to include high school experience correct?

If it is work experience it counts, volunteer work counts, if it pertains to hand eye coordination it counts also. If you can somehow make it fit the theme of being a good candidate for dental school then it works.

EDIT: You want to show that you are a well rounded person so if something you did in HS for an extended period of time helps then by all means put it in.

I put in that I volunteered during my 4 years of HS.
