On the waitlist-Tier 1. Shall we make a list?

Members don't see this ad.

How many tiers are there??

I am in the second tier! haha...

I would have better luck trying to run a mile in 3 minutes!

Unfortunately, there are only two tiers.
And I am tier two as well.

tier 1....

are there REALLY 400 people on the waitlist?!?

Count me in for tier 1. Should I just give up and go to UMass? Wish I could answer that ?

Two Tiers...man, this process is all random. dang

Tier 1...ARGH. I hate this crap.

Have you guys got emails? Or are you making this up for now?

tier 2..I am going to vomit

No email. Check the website. BTW, It says the waitlist is not ranked--thus is there any difference in the tiers?

Hi I'm a MS1 at Penn.

Wait-list people -- don't give up hope. Many of my closest friends were, like yourselves, initially missplaced on the waitlist. (And they always say that all the cool kids come off the waitlist). I've found the process to be somewhat arbitrary. If Penn really is your first choice, let the folks in admissions know that and explain why (esp. to Gaye). But please be truthful. Don't rack up admissions to schools just for fun. Best of luck!

What if we are waitlisted, but it is a very close tie between Penn and another school for first choice, and we are waislisted at both? Then what should we do?

nap, i'm in the same position. upenn is my no. 2 choice, so i can't really lie to them with the whole "you're my top choice, yadda yadda..."

Is it okay for us to email gaye?

Or do people not do that?

FYI I heard a rumor that they waitlisted people based primarily on interview performance...

If you continue with the list you should find a wide range of people...some with extraordinarily high stats and some with average stats....

1)Adding myself to waitlist 2 - what difference is there between waitlist 1 and 2?
2)next question - Penn oversubscribes - i.e sends out more acceptances than it has spots for - what on earth kinds of odds do we face as waitlistees?
3)does anyone have any idea what the deal is with being waitlisted and being an MD/PHD? how many of us are out there?
4) bumping up Naps question - is it OK to email Gaye - a letter means getting involved with envelopes.... and stamps.... and its sticky....
5)just for the record GODDAM!T !@#!@AAOSDIAUS@()#) - I was expecting a rejection - an acceptance I hadnt prepared myself for - but sloppy seconds?
DarkChild is not pleased.
That being said - good luck to everyone. Congrats to all those who were accepted - seriously think hard about going, cuz its a great place. Fellow waitlistee's good luck as well - we'll all make it somewhere, and in the end thats all that really matters.
It always so trite, but I really believe that things generally work out for the best.

Cant figure out how to fix the list thingie but:
DarkChild 3.6GPA (really 3.57  ) 35 MCAT

From reading the waitlist FAQ page I think tier 2 means you have a much lower chance, (thats me doh!). The page says that they approxmiate taking 12-50 ppl off the list this year, so I figure the chances are not that good, or at least not as good as at some other schools that traditionally have a lot of movement, but if you really love the school I'd do as the penn student suggested and let them know, doesn't hurt right.

Trying to fix the list. waitlist is a bummer (my third one!) but DarkChild's right, any of us that got waitlisted at Upenn is certainly going to get in somewhere and that's mos def a good thing! I'm sure most of you like myself have at least one acceptance so your med school options can only go from great to better. At least penn put up the status now so we can stop checking email and concentrate on march madness! gluck all

AHA! I knew my interviewer didn't like me. Not necessarily happy, but not surprised by the waitlist.

Did everyone who interviewed get on some sort of waitlist? I know it is not nice to ask if anyone got outright rejected (post-interview), but so far it's looking like they're letting many of us down gently ...

Tier 1...OHSU here I come! When I interviewed at Penn it was made very clear that letters of your interest in Penn are very instrumental in gaining acceptance off of the waitlist.

hahahaha - oh god I'm pathetic.
ok but thats it, I'm not checking it anymore.

Okay, so I already posted this in the offical upenn thread but I thought that it would be good for you all to see.

Ugh! I can't believe they did that to do you! Dirty rats! I couldn't tell you before, but you were rated as a 10+/10 by the admissions committee- I sat in the group that reviewed your file. I assure you this was pure politics and nothing to do with your qualifications and Penn's interest in you (they try to get a "mix" in the class from varying backgrounds, etc, and it ends up random at the end, at least to me). Please don't think it was anything personal against you! ••••Scoob will laugh because he's already seen this but this has just made me lose all faith in a system that I already had pitifully little faith in to begin with...

Having a great mcats/grades/interviews appearantly means nothing at many schools. I don't get what they want. . .

Uff, I feel like a fish out of water.
Tier one. And I understood that they accept anywhere from 12-50 students, but that wasn't a prediction for this year. (pretty darn broad prediction don't you think?)

I was tier one last year with stats almost identical to GG16- I would suggest strong letter of interest. also if you are near the area stop in, if you work with Penn professors have them drop a word. Good luck

[/QB]••••I have a friend on the ADCOM who explained it to me like this...

They had more students with 10/10 scores than they had spots available. Now imagine 20 of them being from one school let's pick Berkeley...
20 Berkeley students get 10/10 have good recs, and have good MCAT scores. They want a diverse class so they're not going to accept all 20 from Berkeley. So what they do is compare the Berkeleys side by side against each other and pick a few of them. (This next part was unclear..I believe they do this with all of the UCs and then compare them side by side scores, extras etc.)...

Some get accepted, some are waitlisted, and some are denied. Anyways that's the gist of their system.

I'm surprised that your student interviewer volunteered all of that information. It could have gotten him in hot water...

UCLA2000- yeah, I think you're absolutely right about it---

The problem is that I GUARANTEE that I was the only person from my college who applied to Penn this year (Bates College), so it's not like I am from Yale or Duke, where they're a plethora of relatively similar applicants. . .

It makes no sense...! <img border="0" title="" alt="[Frown]" src="frown.gif" />

the interview isn't the only part of the admissions process. I think alot of comes down to the recommendations, essays, and the EC's and interest of the applicant. When the committee meets, they will take into consider the gestalt of the applicant. I would assume they highly value what the applicant would bring to the class. They want diversity in many areas. I would suggest that UCLA2000's post could apply to more than just undergrad college (e.g. state of residence, research type, volunteering, etc).

you cant make sense of this process. it humbles everyone.
