Internet access ports? I hope u guys have wireless in the whole library. Then, it will worth the $250K

Hey Tink,
Expensive? Exclusive? Enchanting? Established? Excellent? Expanding? Wireless internet? Si.

A school that loves you back? Worth every G? Definitely.

you see, UCSF is gifted, but Penn you must visit
may become addicted, Penn's style is exquisite,
endorphins uplifted, sensation is mystic,
$250k as listed, but once you check out, no doubt you will miss it😉

My fellow Pimped-out-Ivy-league-Predoc-Friends.

The word of the day is: PENN

If you remember seeing the campus there is a red art-deco statue thing that says "LOVE" in the center of campus, and that's exactly what Penn is about.

Our lounge is gonna be stylin, but they made us work for it. They reward their students, and treat them well, but we gots to hustle for it too. Nothing wrong with that, but PENN is pimp.

Diddy, all the lounge is missing is some caviar and champagne.

Giddy up

I'll take care of the caviar😉

Liya,

I like you already!! I'll bring the crackers🙂

Hey PENN-Pals,

I just got an email from Rose Merritt who is the leasing agent at Chestnut Arms:

We already have 6-8 dental students living in this building and if anyone are interested I would definately check this place out. We're gonna have a grand old time.....we'll eat lotsa caviar and crackers.

These apts are very economical, and very very close to PENN Dental and retail. The police station is right across the street so security is pretty good. Also, there are tons of restaurants everywhere.

If you have any questions, feel free to PM or email me.

Here are some pics of the apts:

Diddy, I really like to visit u guys and the cheeseteak thing. However, I know if I go there and see your library, it would be sad to get back here. Our library at ucsf is pretty with the view of the gate and stuff, but it's foggy most the time. And we don't have that big screen TV like yours.

And we have to share the library with all other pharm, med, PT, nursing etc... students.

And holy, ucsf hygiene will take most classes with dental students as well. For instance, histo, anatomy, biochem, etc...They have a small class of 8 students. I do understand the dental/med together class things. But hygiene has to suffer like us? I wouldn't if I just want to be a hygiene. I feel bad for all of my hygiene classmates already.

😀

Hey Penn pals
Are your Penn Keys working?? I tried to access some info and the system does not allow me to do so. Is it because I am not registered yet or I probably messed up on my password.?

Dude, I can't believe our thread fell to page 2!! What's up guys, UPenn doesn't deserve to be on page 2 now does it?? Show some love.😉

Alright, so I haven't gotten anything from Penn lately. I'm starting to feel left out and missing those prestine white envelopes with the beautiful UPenn Crest in the upper left corner.

oh and as for what to bring to Philly i think blankets and games are in order. Since we're all gonna be studying a lot, we'll need to take breaks and i think besides watching movies, games are always good.

Long live the Penn Thread. 😍 😍

When are you guys planning to settle down in philly? I was thinking about 12, 13 of august. What do you guys think?😕

I'll be landing 08/04. Need time to set up studio & to absorb the sights, sounds, & liquids of Philadelphia B4 orientation. Also want to mingle with some upperclassmen & check-out satellite clinics. Maybe us SDNers can even have a VIP engagement at the new Levy Lounge before orientation. Or, have a party to christen our scrubs at Chestnut Hall or Arms. Just suggestions to promote unity & to celebrate the beginning of the wildest ride of my life.

Hey ALI I was having ths same problem with the Penn key. I thought I might have entered in the wrong or different password, but after trying for like 20 mins two days in a row. I think there might be something wrong, cuase Desi got in fine.

Liya I am planning on moving there on august 1st so I can get my furniture bought, etc.

Hey kids,

Well i think i'll be heading up to philly early august too, probably around the 1st or 2nd. We should definitely get together, paint the town red before we have to settle down and start studying! I know i want to get to know philly a little better before orientation etc.

So what is the Penn Key you guys are talking about? I haven't gotten anything in regards to a key! Corky, Corky what's going on?!?

Hook a brother up.

About the scrub ceremony I'm game. Do we have to have a particular color? I know at some schools dental students have different color scrubs so that they aren't confused with the med students.

Let get a check off when we're all gonna be in philly that way we can coordinate and help each other.

Hi guys
I requested a new PIN and hope that takes care the problem.

Shootin4par-Penn key is for logging in to many electronic service. You need it to log on to PennPortal and campus express. Definitely ask Corky for it.

Any potential dental house or grad tower resident here??

What up guys!

I guess most of you are either finishing up or already done with exams. Have an awesome summer, can't wait to meet all of you.

Ali,
I'll be living in the grad tower. I think its kinda wack that they let you move in on Aug. 16 when class starts the following monday. They don't give u much time to settle. Anyway have u decided where you will be staying?

Unagi--

You know i noticed in the housing info that the earliest was the 16th and then they charge you extra, which really surprised me. I was initially going to live on campus, but decided to do the big move and get an apartment (chestnut arms, arent i original?).

ALI-
Also i called and asked Corky about the Penn Key and she told me that it was something in the last mailing, and its not a big deal. ofcourse when you havent seen it one (ME) begins to worry if it was important..............sigh already stressing and not even in school yet.

🙁

Yo guys we're falling again! Anyway I figured I had to write sometihng, so anyone get anything else from Penn? I thought we were supposed to be gettting the book list and stuff. I want to get that soon, so I can see what we are actually gonna be doing!

Kudos to Scandalous for bringing us back to the top (WHERE WE BELONG, uhm uhm)

yeah im waiting for more stuff. I cant get over how quickly time is going.......2 months til we all start orientation!?! 😱 😱 😱

so someone on the temple site asked if there are good looking a guys at temple. naturally i told her there has never been one, and that she should come to penn. had to have a lil fun, remember they snubbed a nice congratulatory note (not sore or anything😉)

gang way for stylin' quakers!

Yo Guys,
Just an update on some more stuff I have gotten, and to bump us up😉 ! I just got an emial from my big sibling at Penn:clap: , and a thing about getting our access cards.

Man how i hate B2K

Alright had to bump us up. But seriosly I havent gotten anything lately from Penn. Scandalous, man you're getting everything, im still wonder where my older sibling is??

Officially less than 2 months.

Alright so I havent heard from my old sibling yet, and that makes me think that Penn is gonna make me be an only child. Maybe one of the faculty will adopt me (i am handsome afterall). 😀

Also for anyone who is waiting for the school to send in their official final transcript double check with YOUR university. Mine made an error and i had them correct it. Just a minor thing, but thought id share.

I haven't received any new mailings. Fess up if you have!🙂

Another thing to bring to Philly: Bubbles.

Shootin,

I'm still an orphan like you but, I have to ask... what/who is/are BUBBLES?

PennDiddy,

It's all good, we orphans will ban together and take on "city hall". It'll be like Annie, but cooler (no scrubbin floors!).

Bubbles are those wonderful spheres that drift in the air. Generally they are made from a soapy liquid and require a little effort to make but bubbles are fun. (also bubbles for da ladies, in the form of bubblebaths, champagne and caviar, but i think bubblebaths will be in order😉)

Chillin' like a villian.

Yeah well dont feel too bad guys, becuase my sib emailed me, and I emailed her back twice and she never responded (its been almost 2 weeks!)

I am orphan #3

Yo Guys, It's time to hit this thread up again. I got an email from my big Sib and she will be a Orientation Crew member as well. she seems really nice, cuz I emailed her and she replied today. Well I pondered what to ask her and I asked about collecting teeth. Here is the portion of the email from my big Sister:

"BREATH! 🙂 If you weren't informed on it, you don't need it! This summer, my class has to collect jars of teeth. So you'll worry about it next summer! 🙂

Let me explain: The incoming first years will be priviledged to start using the computerized symLab within the first week of school! Which is great since its the first year its being offered. If you have questions related to that, I'll try my best to answer it, but I must say I'm not the best person you can talk to. When we first got here, we started out with Histology, as will you guys along with the SymLab. Besides the SymLab and Histo, your have some b.s classes to get your started. Nothing too much
related to Operative Dentistry; just basic sciences.

......... "

Hopes this helps everyone out.

More interesting statistics

There are 115 students matriculating to PENN this year One of the largest classes in history. Thanks to SDN!!!

50 guys, 65 girls

Found this out from my big sib today.

DesiDentist

Also, for those who have not heard from your big sib please do this...

email me at ([email protected]) you name and current email address. my sib told me that many people don't have current email addresses/or no email addresses which hinders the selection process. So if you can email me, I am compiling a list and sending it down to PENN soon.

Regards,

DesiDentist

Hey there,

I just got a big sib today! says adoption process lil slow but for sure all off us will be family b4 we know it. Desi's sib looks pretty cool giving out the undercover dent sim info.. hope my big sib is just as cool... can only hope... Shootin, thanks for clarification..I wasnt sure if you meant bubbles the chimp or the stripper. Cant wait to meet you guys.. I be in P-town by 07/25... anyone arriving around that time also

Hey guys,
What siblings are you talking about? I didnt receive any emails. Did you get a letter from SDN with their email address or how does it work, b/c i would really like to speak to someone from the school. Thanks🙂

Liya:

most schools have the new D2 students choose new D1 students to guide the first year. These are you siblings. I heard from mine this week. Having a good Big Sib is instrumental since they pass down their notes/materials to you. So this could help you out alot. You should email me your email address since that is the main thing that is hindering from your Big Sib from contacting you.

I'm sending a list to my Sib who will forward and update the email list.

email me at [email protected]

Well I got a big packet from PENN today which includes the entire book list for the first year, school report, and some good deals on computers (from DELL).

DesiDentist

Desi, what books do u use for anatomy?

For Gross we use "Anatomical Basis of Human Anatomy"-Liebgott, Benard 2001

Grants atlas of anatomy-Agur, A.M.R. 1999
atlas of human anatomy-Netter 1989

For radio we use Oral Radiology: Principles and Interpretation-Pharoah, White 2000

An Atlas of Dental Radio Anatomy:Kasle 1994

Seem like we are using different books. I'll have Moore for anatomy. And a dissector book besides the Netter atlas.

They are all so heavy. 😱 😱 😱 And so expensive.

hey guys
What do you think about clinical rental program? Is it necessary?
Also, what do you guys think about the computer package the school offers? I don't know much about computer and I am thinkind about getting a cheaper Toshiba laptop instead of getting an IBM Penn suggested.

ALI:

With the new Schattner Center now the instruments are sterilized right in the clinic. Whereas before they were sent to the Medical school. I don't know if there are alternatives to this option and the rentals.

Regarding computers, I think it would be a safe bet to contact Daniel B. Shapiro at [email protected] and ask him directly. I think there should be no conflicts, since a Toshiba is a PC which can have Microsoft XP Professional installed. However, ask da man down there first.

Can't wait to meet ya all.

DesiDentist

Hey ALI,
Yeah I am pretty sure we have to do the clinical rental. But with the computers I would recommend buying the cheaper toshiba. The computers the school is offering are a good deal if you want the top of the line computers. But in all reality no one needs a 3.0 gig computer. You cant really even tell a speed difference between a 2.0 gig and a 3.0 gig computer, so might as wll go with the 2.0 gig and pay about $500 less.

Yeah, I never heard of anyone having 1.0 GB of RAM!!!!!
Damn, my first computer had 256 kb of RAM!!! But yeah, the 1,300 dollar computer is pretty decent. Well, I'm glad to have options and I was nervous of ordering and having it delivered to my apt. At least now I feel that I can get a computer w/out having a nervous breakdown.

Remember to get the gigabit Ethernet port. 10 million bytes/sec!!!!

DesiDentist

Hey guys,
Can anyone tell me what kind of phone service you guys are getting. I received some papers about phone services for students, are any of you familiar with those? Are they good?
Thanks

My Cell phone will be my main phone. However, I will be getting a basic phone service for my apt. I think that verizon has a package for like 13 bucks a month for basic service.

DesiDentist

Just like Desi said, the cell is gonna be the main phone number. I think i too will just have a basic service at my apartment, and have a cell to call long distance, etc. Most likely since we'll be in class, in the library, or out studying at some other place (😉) the cell will be the best way for you to stay in touch. I don't know which plans are offered (haven't started looking yet) but I know there are so good deals. Hope that helps, and Im sure this is what most of us will probably be doing.

Thanks guys fro your reply,
Well my cell phone is also going to be my main line, but i would like to find some cheap plan for internet and i guess incoming calls. So i guess i am going to look into that basic plan that Desi mentioned for $13. I was just wondering about the plans that they offered for students, if they were any better. Well, anyways thanks once again!🙂

hi everyone,

I just wanted to let you know that i'll be joining you at Penn Dental!! I happened to stumble across this site a while back, and i can't wait to get to philly.

just to catch up with the conversation...

i'm from NC
graduated from Virginia Commonwealth University
B.S. chem.; minor--religious studies
still waiting to hear about housing--applied for Sansom.
no big sib yet???
and i'll be using my cell phone.
oh..and i like to party too.

other than that i noticed some discussion over computers. I've been researching laptops. I've found that the IBM T40 and T40p that Penn is offering is in fact a really good buy...about $600-900 cheaper than similar units from competitors (Dell, Toshiba, FIC, Compaq). i mean we might as well make use of that wifi technology in the new lounge...which looks amazing if you havent visited the school recently.

i also found a great analysis of these computers at

http://www.anandtech.com/mobile/showdoc.html?i=1801

hopefully that helps someone out there.

well that's me in a few words. and trust me...there's no lack of them here. feel free to IM me or whatever.

later

NC2PA welcome to your new home!

I think you should definitely be all excited, as we all are!!

Once again welcome to Penn Dent, and the GREAT CLASS of 2007!! If you need anything don't hesitate to ask, we're all here to for ya!!

All the best!

Hi
I got the new orientation agenda last week and just can't find white coat ceremony on it. I talked to Corky's assistant today and found out that it is going to be on august 18, first day of orientation. Can any one confirm this? She also told me that those info was sent a while ago. Am I missing something?

You know I think the postman totally hates me, cos I seem to get all the info much later than you folks. Maybe its just being in Florida, I mean lets face it: people here can't vote, can't drive, and probably can't read.........so thinking this may translate over to the government should I be surprised that the postman hasn't delivered my mail!??! White coat ceremony info? I haven't heard anything, but then again Im not surprised.🙁
