i got the orientation info...but i haven't heard about any white coat ceremony and i didn't see it on the orientation schedule either...

on another note...has anyone gotten a housing assignment from sansom yet?

I have received the orientation stuff, however heard nothing about the white coat ceremony. From what i heard i dont think we have one, but i heard it from students not from the staff at SDM.

I received room assignment from Sansom place more than a month ago. But I cancelled it. The reason i got it so early is because i applied early. I know some people who still didnt hear anything. I am sure you will hear soon. Good Luck!

Hello Penn family,

First, welcome to the baddest crew NC2PA. Just wanna say I can not wait to shake hands with all of you & smile together in the same room. All these postings on SDN(especially for Desi) finally manifesting themselves into real people will definitly be a BLAST! It would be great if us SDNers have an informal meet&greet at Levy Lounge B4 the rest of the festivities get under way so we wont be overwhelmed with new faces. I look forward to all of us "gelling". The PENN class is folding itself into a new generation of dentists. The class of 007 will rock the house.
This year's class is one of the biggest in PENN's history with 115 people and I really think the positive vibes presented on this board did it for many. I know many of you who never posted on SDN who emailed me about this fine program. You saw us fight bitter fights to keep our loyalty alive, especially against those who did not know what PENN was all about. Anyways, we all should be glad to know that we have selected a great program. May we all be great friends for the next four years and beyond.

If u guys stay in the same complex, you guys should have open door policy like us at ucsf. We have so much fun with open door, eat together, taking nap together and study until the wee hour. And then making instructors come to our apt to tutor us in the evening too.
And when we got mad, we put the "DO NOT DISTURB" sign up.

Your class sounds like the best class of 007.

ok...so I won't make it up to PA until the 16th thanks to Sansom, but since everyone seems to be moving up a little earlier....make sure to have a few rounds on my behalf. and i'll be sure to back them up when i get there.

and for the open door policy....campus security seems a bit tight, but feel free to stop by the "dorms."

Although Cookie Crisp is decent it still doesn't compare to Count Chocula! Nothing can beat a ailing cartoon who needs chocolate to survive. As for the Indian fighting skills, remember that its closer to the old Batman show, Biff, Pow, Kaazam! Then you need to lame indian love story to be adding where the young couple runs off to the mountains/sea (take ur pick) and start singing and dancing, because of course its oh so realistic.

The first meeting for the Mafia will be sometimes before class starts, but the exact day is tba.

Keeping with including more people this guy :meanie: doesn't seem to popular with crowd, but i think if we invite him he may become nicer......worth a try.

Sorry Shootin, bit Id have to go with NC2PA cookie crisp is the bomb, too bad i didnt have any that night. Oh yeah you know what else is tight Calvin and Hobbes, I love that little kid, he's like six :meanie: , bt this face is totally him.

NC2PA to get your email account you will/ should have gotten a Penn ID/pin. You use that and it lets you log into the Penn portal and set up your email. I was having some trouble with it so I just had to ask for a new pin, and I know a few other people have/were too.

:scared: WOw this guys is freakin out about gettin in the mafia, I think we're gonna have to chill with him and a few beers.

After you set up your PENN Key and Password go to the following URL:

https://rosetta.upenn.edu/cgi-bin/websec/websec_authform?app=acctsrvcs

Fiddle around there, use your Penn Key and it should give you your email address. Mine is the same as my PENN Key.

However, you have multiple alias' so, you can email me at:

[email protected]
[email protected]
[email protected]
[email protected]
etc.

However, regardless what address you email at, they end up in the same account.

Yeah, I am having a blast with my email. I wish there was just an "auto-login" I hate logging in each time. But I guess the web email is like this. When we get hooked up to the PENN-Net system we can download a "pine" version for emails. Which will go a lot quicker.

Also, for all of you PENN-Pals. Make sure to submit your final transcript to PENN. They won't put you in the database of matriculants unless you fulfill your academic obligations.

Also, for the record. Not only was Shootin' the first email holder, he was also the first D.M.D.

Desi brought up a very good point. I'm sure everyone has already taken care of their transcripts, but make sure they are sent ASAP. I called and spoke to the Admissions office and found out that there was a mistake on my transcript, so just make sure everything is up to date. Minor inconvience, but avoid a major catrosphe.

About the auto-logon, i wish there was a way......just have to get to Penn to do it!

Also, make sure that your granted degree(s) and minor(s) or whatever you told PENN you would achieve are listed clearly as "GRANTED, etc." That is what PENN is looking for. Also, I know that some schools make errors on this part due to changes in the requirements (for ex. if you got AP credit but it still shows on your transcript as "NOT TAKEN")

Im not sure if you've heard but there's a new book on Benjamin Franklin and it talks about how he didn't get into Harvard so he set up Philadelphia Academy which became UPenn. It's a pretty cool book by Walter Isaacson....

I hear from my buddies at PENN in most classes the profs give you handouts and they go by the handouts. If you notice in our book list, there are not that many textbooks, but many handouts. Also, the profs are gonna use eCollege and put up powerpoint slides and other useful info online so we can access their notes prior to and after classes.

Also, I believe there is a transcription service. but if you want to take notes, I use legal pads and a clip board, and I go home and hole punch them and put them into the appropriate section in my note-binder.

Relax. It's gonna be fun, and we all will help each other out.

That is what the Mafia is all about.

I like you need to take notes. I wish i was like some of my friends who could just walk into a class listen and then jot down 3 words on the napkin to their cup of coffee and think they got the essential part of the lecture (and then score a 97 on each test....). But alas I've come to terms with my "learning disability" (taking notes) and find that the easiest way is to have a notebook and then just transfer the notes to the designated binder once im home. This is pretty much in line with what Desi mentioned..i think the clip board may be better (its sturdier for sure!). Also Desi brought up a good point. Most of the professors realize that we have enough on our plates and don't want to burden us with unneccessary amounts of work. They will give us the essentials and then expand upon them in lecture. Hence the outline/skeleton/notes and let us just fill in the minor details.

Also about the note service, if you miss something thats always there as a good back up, but you;ve got your class mates who you can lean on in rough times.....

I'm sad to say that I won't be joining you guys (and gals) as part of the class of 2007. I withdrew from the class as I recieved acceptance to a Canadian dental school. I've thought about it for a long time and ultimately came to this decision. The experience with UPenn and the folks at the school has been an amazing one, and hopefully our paths will cross again. I know you guys will have a blast. Congratulations to all!

The last time I'll be signing off with UPenn SDM.

Hi folks,

I'm just wondering, do most of you guys have to take out private loans or did the government provide you with enough financial aid (loans and grants)? I am just a bit confused after checking on the financial aid website. The "Financial Aid" link states that I should get a private loan, but the "Loan status" link states that I have enough government loans to cover the estimated cost. I will call tommorrow. Just wanted to know if anyone has the same problem. Thx

First of all welcome to the Upenn tread. Good to see another Penn person here that we can get to know before school starts!

To try to answer yourquestion the best of my knowledge. The first loan is the stafford loan which will cover $38,500of ourcosts, obvioulsy we still have some to makeup. I know that based on your circumstances Penn does give a lot of grants to make up the rest. Your next alternative is the health professions loan given by the government. It does have a higher rate than the stafford loan, but Penn might also pay the interest on that while in school (not sure) . If they wont or if you are worried about the higher interest after school, a private loan may be a better route to go, becuase of how low the rates are. Personally I would reccomend calling the Penn fianancial office as they are supposed to help you get as much money as you need. I know a few other people on this board were havingthesame question, so maybe they can help you out a little more.

I should have been more specific with my question. There were some discrepancies with the financial aid letters financial services sent me and the financial aid listed on my account in the penn portal. I called financial services to see what was up.... all settled.

Also, just wanted to ressurect this thread cuz it fell all the way down. Hehe
