Taking the Mcat this summer. Next semester i have room for one more upper level bio corse. Should I take Microbiology (4 credits), BioChemistry (4 credits and filled with grad students, but the undergrads are not graded on the same curve) or molecular bio(3 credits)

Additional information: I will have cell bio done by next semester. And physiology is already on my schedule for next semester

Additional question: is Bio chem more important than physiology?

Biochem is probably the most helpful for the MCAT.

Really? IMO it's too detailed be be of any use on the MCAT, where the focus is on big concepts.

I'd recommend a non-science class. Keep your sanity instead of taking more useless science classes.

Science isn't useless son. Although taking a non-science class helps (something in social sciences and humanities. fine arts sucks 100%).

Straw man much?

Trust me. In biochem right now, took MCAT over the summer. The material is close to useless for the exam. I like how you haven't taken either but somehow can make a qualified affirmation of the previous statement.

I'm always in for a straw man argument. 😀 :woot:

*cough* You're partially right about the bolded.

Might be a difference between schools and courses. Of the courses listed, biochem had the most relevance to the material on the MCAT, from what I can remember.

You can take the MCAT without having biochem (i had no idea people talk so much about biochem and the MCAT until I came to SDN a year later). But a lot of schools are moving to require biochem, so I think that would probably be the best choice (prior to matriculation but you may as well get the added info for the MCAT IMO).

Agree. You absolutely do not need Biochemistry or Microbiology for the MCAT, although Genetics and Cell Biology (if you haven't taken them already) are of great use. Between the two, I would actually recommend Microbiology for MCAT prep. Microbiology is more about classification..developing schema for different types of microbes. It can be helpful for passages.

The only thing you learn in biochemistry that you may not learn elsewhere and NEED for the MCAT is familiarity with the 20 amino acids. In my case, I just memorized which amino acids were in which of the 3 main groups and that was enough. I didn't get a 15 on MCAT Bio but I'm comfortable with how I did.

But as per the bolded, you absolutely should take Biochemistry before applying to medical schools if you can. So if you're applying to schools in 2014, take Biochem next semester for that reason.

Take biochemistry. You'll be glad you did, both in terms of pre-requisites and doing well your MS1 year.

I like the non-science idea... give your brain a bit of a chance to chill on science and take something that you are pretty confident you can get a high grade in.

A writing class may be good VR prep, if I'm assuming correctly. It should be an easy A, too.
