Hi all,
I am a postbacc dental student and I am debating whether I should take Genetics or Infectious Disease class this semester. They are both upper level 300 bio only genetics has a lab. I am doing this to boost my GPA and I know Genetics is a very hard class but it might help with the DAT. Did anyone ever taken those classes? do dental school prefer genetics over infectious disease or just any Upper Level Bio classes? Which ones do D school recommends? I am also working fulltime and can only take a certain number of credits so I can only do one of the other.

Thanks again.

Both classes are recommended courses (Genetics + Immunology) I assume Infectious Disease is close to Immunology? If not, then genetics for sure.

However, I don't think taking either/or will hurt you. No schools REQUIRE Genetics (from what I know, OR immunology, correct me someone if I'm wrong) Most importantly, take the one that you think you will get the best grade it, or the one you are most interested in (which would mean better grade, I would think?)

Take both and even more.

I believe the OPs question was, if he had to take only one or the other, which one, not what the best way to improve his chances are(which of course you are right, to take both and as many Bio courses as possible)
Personally though, given the option I'd take Genetics. Even though I despise labs! It's like 3 hours of sitting around doing nothing!

I worked full-time throughout my undergrad and Masters program. If you want that dental school acceptance, work it out. You need to show ADCOM that you can handle full-time science course load.

I am currently taking Immunology, Vaccines and Genetics. The infectious diseases professor however said she could force add me to her class, and I am tempted to drop Genetics and lab for that class due to restriction on credit hours. I have a feeling I will probably do better in Infectious Diseases. I guess if Genetics isn't really require, it won't matter if I drop it or not.

Anyone else took either class and which one benefits better in the long run?

Thanks for the advice Cedar!

you are right, im just debating because next semester, I can take genetics with a better teacher and i can only take 10 credit hours as a non degree student so I cannot take both. Just wondering which class helps prepare me for dental school better?

Take 10 credits and have you done any research work? Do couple credits of research if possible.

thats a good idea, although I did research when I was in dental hygiene school already, and tons of volunteering hours. My problem is my science GPA :-/
