If I am a non-science major who has only taken the required science courses, and I need to take two upper-level BIOS courses to apply to many of my state's med schools, would ecology be okay to take? All the cell bio, infectious disease, immunology, etc are full already. Or should I just take one of those in a different semester?

I wouldn't think so - is it classified as a BIOL? At my school, ecology courses are offered by the Environmental Science department and are largely considered to be gut classes. Only 1 or 2 Envi Sci courses transfer to (my school's) Bio major.

Just because a class is full doesn't mean you can't get in. If it has a waitlist, get on it. Go speak to the professor. Also, most schools have significant class adjustment as students drop and add courses they want - if you work I am positive you can get into one of these. If they are reserved for bio majors (which is annoyingly true here), go talk to the professor individually and see what you can work out. I would mention how you're interested in the course though, NOT how you are taking it as another pre-req.

It depends on the school really. My school has ecology listed as an upper division class under the school of biological sciences. My school is heavy on the bio majors though and they have an add/drop deadline of Friday of week 2 so its hard for me to help you out with your situation since you can still be added from the waitlist.

OP, if this is the case, I would suggest getting into an ecology class and then dropping it if/when you get into another bio class.

You could call the specific schools you are doing this for and ask as well...

If it's in the Biology department, it should be fine. My ecology and evolution classes were some of the best classes I ever took in college, and were quite applicable to medical problems such as epidemiology, parasitism and drug resistance.

It is in my school's biology department as an upper-level course. I already spoke to the professors who told me not to expect any movement int he class size or any kind of exception. There is no wait list at my school at all. I am basically watching the registration site like a hawk to see if anyone drops any of the other courses, but no luck yet.

Also, I attend one of the top universities in the US....but what if I took an upper-level bio at my city college in the summer? Would that be bad? I took physics + lab and bio lab at that school because of some ongoing health issues that forced me to withdraw from those courses at my primary institution.
