Just got an interview for UPitt and I am totally stoked ! 😀
Could I get some advice on what hotels to stay at, whom to talk to at the interview, maybe what some of the interviews were like, and any regrets about UPitt??

I'd recommend either Wyndham Hotel or Holiday Inn Select. I stayed at Wyndam, Pitt discount about $100/night, very nice place. Holiday Inn is a little closer to Pitt, about 10-15min walking to Pitt. Check w. Ms. Rose Mangold to see if they still have discount for interviewing student at those places.

Take 28X bus from the Airport about $2, get off at corner of Fifth and Bellfield, walk Left on Fifth Ave, 1 block toward Holiday Inn.
Bus stop for 28X bus to Airport is also in front of Holiday Inn

Take 28X bus from the Airport, get off at Forbes Ave and McKee (right in front of the Hotel)
To catch the 28X back to the Airport, you'll have to walk some distance to Fifth Ave.

There're also some other cheaper places around town but I don't know much about them. I don't recommend BestWestern (****ty place, back in 2001)

I recommend the Wyndham. If you know you won't be cancelling your interview then look for non-refundable tickets from Wyndham.com for $76. The hotel itself is very nice and just a few blocks down the hill (actually, it's more like H-I-L-L) from the dental school.

whom to talk to at the interview

During your visit you'll meet current students who will flock to the free buffet the school provides like flies to s***. They'll be more than happy to answer any questions you might have, so be sure to have some ready. Remember to speak with many people so that you get a large sampling of opinions about the school--don't just take one person's opinion (good or bad). Once they state their overall opinion, always find out *why* by pressing for as many details as possible. That way you will get some idea of whether you would feel the same way in their shoes.

Your interview experience should be comfortable, but it will depend somewhat on which faculty member you draw. For mine I had to read and analyze a dental-related article from the popular press (no joke, but don't worry...it's *extremely* unlikely that you would have to do that). That surprised the hell out of me, but otherwise the conversation was laid back and full of the usual questions (see the SDN interview feedback section for other opinions).

At some point during your visit you will be given an envelope with your interviewer's name on it. Before attending that interview, ask Pitt students about your assigned professor to help prepare yourself. For example, since I found out that my guy was in charge of the community service program I was able to emphasize that part of my background in the interview (while taking care not to sound like a monster kiss-ass).

Congrats DDSJeff, I also found out I got an interview at UPITT today from Infosource ( I never ever thought that I would find anything out from that website...I felt like it was never updated 😴 ) But this morning, I checked it and found out I got an interview, I too was very excited. I can't wait to hopefully meet some of you. I still don't know when my date is but I'm assuming it'll be around them same time considering we found out about the same time. Thanks for all of the advice about hotels and what not. Anyone from FL in your dental class (? for the UPITT DS's). Thanks. 👍

DDSJeff77: I called Mrs. Mangold yesterday and found out that my interview is on 12/13/04....I wish it was before 12/1 so that I could find out, but everything was full. Hopefully I'll hear from my state school before hand. Good luck on your interview.
