Yeah, thanks for the update Geldrop. Let's hope some people withdraw their names in the next week or two. Man I wish I knew where I was on the list!

So apparently about 10 people have been called off the list so far, and its moving although not as fast as last year.
I don't understand this. UB is more than halfway through their list. Haha. UB must not be as good of a school. 😉

According to someone I was talking to who was on the HP list last year (neighbor) he said that they order the list like a lottery essentially. And that they also told him it was moving really slow and only a few people didn't get in off the list. He said he thinks they just say that so that people don't assume they will get in.

So ranking is random? Geesh. I wish that all schools were up front with us and would just lay their cards out on the table...."we rank the list such and such a way, you number x on a list of 500. our list typically moves from June 1 through August 19. As of today, we have offered acceptances to x number of people"
They should just make it clear that there are no guarantees (as if we didnt know that already!). And what ever hope we put in that information is on us.
But instead we are left to harass the admissions people and rely on he said/she said...not that I dont appreciate the info 😉 But really I dont understand what harm could come of telling me I am number 2 or 250 on a list of 251!!!!!!!
Ahhhhhhhhh. Anyway, that is how it would go if I were the ruler of the AAMC!!!! 🙂

Spin😀

he didn't mean its STRICTLY random. What he meant by it, was that it seemed random from his perspective, it didn't corelate to scores or anything from what he saw of people that he met in school.

Ahh...I see. Thanks for the extra info, Geldrop. Well, at any rate we still dont have a handle on the method to Upstate's madness!!!!

And so I wait.

Yeah, I refuse to believe they rank the list randomly. I can't remember if Jennifer Welch said anything about how the list is ranked. It seems they probably give you an overall numerical score based on GPA/MCAT/AMCAS stuff and mainly based on the interview. One time Dr. Keating and Jen Welch spoke at Syracuse Univesity (I'm an alum) and said that once you've gotten an interview, you are kind of on a level playing field with other applicants who got interviews. Not sure how true that really is. I know other schools have evaluation forms with different qualities listed and interviewers give the student a number from 1 to 5 for things like friendliness, etc. Maybe they use a similar form and come up with a numerical score. I'm just guessing though. It seems like everyone who interviewed at Upstate thought their interview went well, so it seems like it would be really hard for them to rank the list based solely on the interview.

Yeah, I dont think it is randon, necessarily....I think what geldrop's friend meant that due to however they come up with our score it seems random to us cause it isnt based just on one aspect of our apps like you said. There is a method....they just dont tell us!!!!

Yes, Upstate uses a similar sort of form to score interviews, my interviewer showed me the form before he filled it out. There were 10-12 qualities that had to be given a numerical score (1-5 , if I remember correctly. Anxiety, breath of knowledge, motivation for medicine, maturity.......I think these are a few if I remember, it's been a while

+pissed+ Does anyone know if that is also for the "Hold by Commitee list"?

I call one day and they mention that I am basically rejected and then the other day they mention that people are called off that list.

Can anyone advise?
HELP!

Does anyone know if that is also for the "Hold by Commitee list"?

About "Hold by Committee List"
----------------------------------
1. They do not draw from "Hold by Committee" until the "High Priority Alternate List" is completely exhausted. (This year, the HPA list has over 100 people on it.)

2. The Hold by Committee List is not ranked.

3. When I spoke to the admissions office last week I was told explicity that they will "Probably not be getting to Hold by Committee this year."

A question for those of you who actually get info when you call....what exactly do you ask?? I must not be asking the right questions cause whenever I call I dont get any useful info!!!

Anyway, here's hoping that all of our phones ring today!!!

Spin😀 😀

The trick to getting good information is not asking. You have to have them volunteer it. For example to find out how many people have been accepted. You ask them something about how the process works when your name comes up on the list do they call, how much time they give for you to respond etc. Ask vauge questions and make them keep talking to try answering a vauge question...

Empty your mind, be formless, shapeless--like water.
Now you put water into a cup, it becomes the cup,
You put water into a bottle, it becomes the bottle,
You put it in a teapot, it becomes the teapot.
Now water can *flow* or it can *crash*!

Ahhh...I see. Thanks I'll try that today!!! Hopefully I will have useful info to report!!

Above all though be nice and friendly and interested

Also, any news on how far down they are in HPA list?

+pissed+ I hope they get to those on the Hold list!

Does anyone know if they reject post interview or is the hold list a polite way of rejection from the school?

Any help appreciated,

Help-
bump = bring up my post (or something like that ...)
last time I spoke to them, monday or tuesday i forget, I was told that they had called 5 or 10 people from the HP WL...

They do reject people post interview. Med schools admissions seems pretty random. I was rejected from UB post interview, but put on the HPA here. You were put on Hold at Upstate, and put on the 'good' waitlist at UB which is more than halfway exhausted. The process doesn't make much sense. Upstate is my last remaining school (after getting rejected from Albany off a 'waitlist').

But anyways.. I'd say they almost definitely will not get to hold this year. Seriously. It's mid-june and they accepted 10 people of 100+.

almondjoy - congratulations on getting into NYMC. I loved the anatomy lab. Lot's of great clinical connections, w/ alumni everywhere - if you decide to go..

Congratulations almondjoy! You must be so relieved to have an acceptance under your belt. So I called Upstate this morning. The call was pretty much useless. I got some lady on the phone who wasn't working at Upstate last year, so she couldn't give me much information on how the list is moving relative to other years. She said the list is moving slowly and they do have a few people withdraw every day, so who knows? I don't know if she meant withdraw acceptances or their name off the waitlist. As usual, she said she doesn't know where I am on the list since that information is confidential. She also said that Upstate got a lot of applications this year, so it's uncertain how the list will move over the next month or so. I dunno. Back to waiting around I guess. 🙁

thanks so much...
hang in there.... I hope and pray that everyone gets in...
🙂 🙂

Alright I just called, told the guy I'll send him a check for 200 dollars if he tells me where I lie on the list. Well he told me i am the very last person on the list and he expects me to paypal him 200 dollars...

Oh well looks like there is no hope for me.

Geldrop - you can't be serious.

Congrats on Wayne State e-spin!!!!!

Of all days to get accepted too - Friday the 13th isn't so unlucky after all.

Thanks Trizi...now I am pondering giving up my WL spot at Upstate. I really liked Upstate, but Wayne and Upstate have gone back and forth in my first choice rankings.
I'll think about it over the weekend and maybe there will be one less person on the HP list!!

Spin😀 😀

Woohoo! I got into Upstate!!! I was called on Monday around 5 at work by Carolyn from the admissions office. I've been dying all week with student doctor being down. Anyhow, I was offered a Binghamton spot and decided to take it even though I could have waited for a Syracuse spot...I didn't want to risk it. I guess all it takes is 1 interview in the end. Needless to say, this has been a damn good week for me. Now I'm just psyched that I finally got to post on this damn forum!

Hey Trizi congratulations
You're the first person on this thread to get in off 2003 HPA.. Hopefully you won't be the last. 🙂

edit: i could get all anal and ask you what your mcat, gpa , stats are-- so we could get an impression how this list is ranked... but fill us in on those details, only if you want.. what do you mean by just one interview? If you mean one good one, sometimes they can fake you out.. lol

congrats, Trizi!!!  (as if we haven't been celebrating together all week).

I meant one interview invitation. My MCAT was a 27, GPA 3.8, BCPM 3.7. Like most premeds, I had lots of ECs. I'm currently doing cancer research at NIH. Also, the week before I got my acceptance I sent Dr. Keating an update letter. I also sent him a letter a couple weeks before I got my interview invite....perhaps it's just a strange coincidence. Good luck all!

  way to go Trizi:clap:

P.S. are you gonna accept the spot

I am thinking of not going to upstate. I haven't made a decision yet. I will let you guys know if i do make a decision. Nevertheless, don't loose hope yet.

I was just kidding...🙂

Looks like Trizi wasn't the only SDNer to get a call on 6/16/03. " Geek666 " posted an upstate acceptance on "the official waitlist forum." I'm surprised we haven't heard from him on this thread...

i gave a call to upstate today and they said that the list is much shorter than last year. other than than they cant say anything.

AHHHH!! I dont understand, didn't someone call a few wks ago and they were told that the list is LONGER than last yr?! Now, thedman calls and they tell him the list is SHORTER?!?! Of course, I could be remembering wrong...

Well, whoever of us goes to Upstate next year shoud politely suggest that they standardize the info they give out to WLed students, cuz this is craziness!!

Spin😀 😀

NO WAY!!!

Its definitely longer when i called. DUnno why that person posted that.... Someone should call up and see what they say again. Yeah E-Spin if i were you and you really wanted to go to upstate hold on to the waitlist and wait until you are willing to commit yourself to wayne. Upstate is a lot better than Wayne in so many respects, but Wayne also has some good points.

Email from Jennifer Welch this morning... stating the obvious... the wait-list is moving very slowly... and it does not look good... NICE!

so how many of us are there on this HPAL? anyone have any idea?

so how many of us are there on this HPAL? anyone have any idea?

Around 115. Of which only 37-50 will be seated in the class. There may be more than 50 HPA acceptances, but only if some HPAers turn Upstate down, opting to go to another school. For instance-- there will be ~100 acceptances off the HPA list IF 50 HPAers choose to go elsewhere?STILL ONLY 50 SEATED.

Where does this seated number come from? Each year about 25-40% of the entering class comes off the HPA list. 150 X .35 = 52 seats. The ~115, comes from the admissions office -- they gave that info out earlier this month.
If youre on the bottom of the list-- your only chance of getting an offer is if LOTS of people on the list decide not to go.

As for the list being smaller this year... I dont know.. I called after the new year , and they told me it Usually has about 70 people on it. Sounds larger to me.. But espin is right-- no standardized release of info.

The best way to know for sure if you will be seated is to ask if they will get to "hold by committee" this year.. If the answer is yes-- then the HPA list will be exhausted. BUT Don't hold your breath this is Highly Highly unlikely!! I think the chances are about 50/50 this year. but who knows?

thanks for ur input. how do u find out what your place is on the HPA list. everytime i call they say its confidential.

You could try to contact your interviewer. If s/he likes you maybe they'll look it up. I won't worry though. No one really knows their rank. The fact that they don't tell you the rank, might mean they don't strictly follow it.

MrBobool - UCLA off HPA last week.

So far: Trizi, geek666, and now MrBobool.

hey all u HPALers. i got some good news for u all. i spoke with upstate yesterday and asked them if they will get to the hold by committee list. i was told that they do every year and that they were expecting to this year as well. but she told me that the list was moving very slowly. i'm hopefull that this is good news. next time someone calls ask them how many of the HPAL people have been admitted so far.

That Upstate gets to the Hold by Committee list each year is simply untrue! Last year, they didn't even exhaust the High Priority List.

😡

ahhh...so whats the deal with them giving us false, inaccurate and incoherent info......i really dont get it😡 😡 😡 😕

Ok.. called yesterday. I spoke to the secretary who doesn't seem to have a lot of access to the confidential particulars-- so most likely her answers were probably speculation. But here is a summary:

1. How would you describe the movement this year, very slow?
Yes that's correct. But we can expect it to pick up a little in the next couple weeks. The week after July 4th usually has some movement.

2. Do you think they will be getting to hold-by-committee this year?
Yes we usually. do.

3. Really?? So you are expecting the HPA list to be exhausted??? That is not what I heard last time I called.
We usually get to a few people on hold-by-committee most years. The HPA list is Usually exhausted.

4. Is the list smaller than last year?
It's about the same, we had slightly over 100 last year too.

5. How far down the list are you now?
I don't have access to that information.

The most interesting is the answers to 2,3. So I guess she is speaking historically, and based on the mood of the office. She said she doesn't have access to this years particulars. So this isn't highly reliable. But it is true that historically they have gotten to hold-by-committee more often than not... What does that mean for us, on the list this year? Not much..

Maybe someone can email Jen Welch, and ask her if she thinks it is likely Upstate will get to "hold-by-committee." Personally, I think calling and talking to the secretaries is not really helpful. Since a lot of it is just speculation. The only one with real information is Jen Welch.

hey medication works,
i agree with u and i also think that talking to the secretaries is a bit unreliable.

who is jen welch?....i dont think i ever met her and what is her email.

also, here is another idea....if anyone got to know their interviewer well, we can email him/her and have him/her find out how far they have moved on the list. i also think that your interviewer can find out your place on the list.

the fact that they usually exhaust the hpa list is somewhat hopeful for us....i guess
