Hello. I haven't seen a thread yet for the UQ Ochsner 2025 intake, so I thought I would start one. I completed my application recently and am hoping for a March interview. 🤞

Congrats! How long after submitting your application did you receive the II?
Thanks! My app was complete on 2/13. On 2/14, I was given access to the online portal where they uploaded all of my application materials that I had sent them previously. A week later, I received the II on 2/21.

It might have been a bit faster of a process for me though because I applied in December with everything but my MCAT score. I was scheduled to take the MCAT in January, so my app was mostly complete when I got my score back on 2/13.

Interviewed last Thursday. Felt like it went ok to good, but it was also my first MMI. They said they’d let us know the outcome in “a few weeks, but less than a month.”

Hey y'all! Current 3rd year here. Please feel free to reach out with any questions about UQ/Brisbane! I can also put you in touch with some of the lower years who are still in Australia - the curriculum structure has changed recently (along with going pass/fail) so they'd be better equipped to answer those types of questions!

Hello! I recently got accepted to UQ Ochsner and I’m really excited, but a little bit concerned about how US residency programs view international students. From what you’ve seen do you feel that students are generally successful in matching into their desired programs? Also, how can students stand out at UQ? Do they do class rank or anything?

Hey! It's difficult for us to know specifically how Ochsner is perceived especially outside the Southeast but as we have now existed for around 15 years the reputation is improving. Ochsner is also very willing to take in their own students for residency (half the entering OBGYN class for July is UQ-Ochsner), so if you're wanting to remain in the Gulf South this is a great option for you. Anecdotally it seemed a bit harder for people who were interested in surgical specialties this year, but that is not to say we don't match in surgery (there were 2 urology matches and a couple neurosurg/vascular matches). Overall we matched to something like 30/50 US states, and only 30% of matches are remaining in Louisiana with a solid showing in other southern states and even some to New England. Overall, it depends on what you're interested in. I'm not super into primary care so the difference between this matchlist and the list for the other school I was accepted to (DO school on west coast with STRONG IM/primary focus) was one of my deciding factors. I think Ochsner is better than the Caribbean simply based on stats; attrition rate is lower, and while we all still have to take the CBSE (fake step required before progression to clinicals), Ochsner's pass mark is lower and equivalent to the estimated percent correct of the actual step 1 exam. We also have the benefit of being citizens/PR holders, so there's no visa requirement and we are not completely foreign educated (i.e. a person from Ochsner should be more favorably regarded than the same person who did all 4 years at UQ).
At UQ, there's not much you can do to stand out coursework wise, especially since we've gone pass/fail for all 4 years now. Grades are relatively unimportant to the domestic students (my friends' favorite saying before we went pass/fail was "4's open doors," which is basically the same as "C's get degrees" here), but Ochsner tracks your grades for MS1-MS3 in the background so that they can quartile us at the end for the MSPE letter before match. Best way to stand out IMO is to knuckle down for years 1 and 2, study for UQ stuff, don't fail CBSE, then come to New Orleans and try and get all your ducks in a row for match (i.e. get research, honor your shelf exams, do well on step 2, etc). Being IMG may preclude you from some programs, but I don't necessarily believe it will kill your application.

Also, to answer the bit about desired program a little better, for 2024 >60% matched within their top 3 choices per this article

Why do I feel like each year the thread is getting shorter? 2022 had 11 pages, 2023 had 3 pages, 2024 had 2 pages.

SDN in general is a lot less active nowadays. Much of the premed and med school discussion has moved to Reddit.

Agree.. not sure if Reddit is the answer but I don’t think SDN is a “real touch” of this community!.. the whole process needs an “update “ ..

Hi there, if I want to start med school in Fall 2025, when should I apply for UQ Ochsner? Is it a similar timeline to US med schools? Would really appreciate any advice.

UQ-Ochsner only starts in January because the academic year in Australia runs from January through November. If you wanted to start in January 2025, you'd need to apply ASAP (in the next couple months ideally). If you wanted to start in January 2026, the application may already be open, but the first interviews wouldn't be until March/April 2025.

hey guys, does anyone know when is the last date to take the MCAT to be considered for this year's intake please

I would reach out to them, but I think that they usually say to take it no later than the end of July.

Got the A!! Does any student here know what the process of setting up living arrangements prior to the start of the program looks like?

Have you joined the Facebook group yet? They have posted an OMSA Brisbane Guide that explains how to go about transitioning to Brisbane.

My MCAT will be on August 17 this year. Should I still apply for Ochsner for January 2025 intake or just apply next year for Jan 2026 intake?

If you apply for the January 2025 intake, they can just roll it over to the 2026 intake if you don't make the cutoff for the interviews this year. So I would probably just go ahead and apply for January 2025. You can also email and ask them.

My understanding is that some years they fill up after the August/ September interviews, but sometimes they may interview in October. An October interview may be the only one you can get with that late of an MCAT. But if you do interview that late, you may be able to get a waitlist that potentially turns into an acceptance.

Hi, thanks so much for your kind reply. I will definitely be emailing them.

Do you know if they require reports of all MCAT attempts, or just the most recent MCAT score?

No problem.

You just submit whatever one you are using to apply, as long as it is 504 or above.

When do Ochsner applications typically open for submission?
I believe Ochsner applications are open right now for Jan 2026 matriculation. 2025 is closing as I was one of the last people to submit my application in August.

Just scheduled an MMI for Sept 19th - anyone have any recommendations on how to best prepare for the scenario based questions ?

Congrats!

I would just know the very basics of medical ethics: beneficence, autonomy, etc.. Also, know a little bit about aboriginal people like how they have been been oppressed historically similarly to Native Americans in the US. And obviously be prepared to answer “why UQ-Ochsner?” type questions.

I believe 7/8 were ethics/scenario type questions, so be prepared to give a reasonable answer, relax, and you'll be fine.

I see, thank you for the guidelines. I've been using the question bank from shemmassian to prepare for ethic/scenario questions and after a few dozen I think I understand the format. This is the last MMI for the 2025 class and I have very average gpa with 98th percentile mcat (3 gap years). I've been so nervous I haven't been sleeping well the last week as this is my only interview for the cycle.

Best of luck to everyone that interviews! Interview results should come out by first week of Oct so I'll update here.

The only thing I would say is different from the practice questions is that they ask a couple of follow-up questions after you answer the initial scenario/ question stem. A lot of these follow-up questions seemed to be there mostly to make sure that you were getting at what they wanted in the scenario because I noticed that I had often answered (or at least partially answered) many of the follow-ups in my original answer.

Just answer in a reasonable way, and I'm sure that you'll be fine. As you probably realize by now, in these questions there are usually two extremes on either side and most of your response is going to be talking about why you're taking your stance somewhere in the middle.

Some anxiety is perfectly normal. If you didn't have any anxiety, it would probably mean you didn't really care. Remember that the point of the MMI isn't to trick you or anything. It is more about making sure that you are compassionate, have good intentions, etc.
