Ureter vs artery in surgery

This might sound like an obvious question but how do you differentiate between the ureter and an artery in pelvic surgery?

Knowing the anatomy helps to know what you are dissecting around

Arteries usually pulsate, whereas the ureter will exhibit peristalsis without being pulsatile

That being said, the two can sometimes be difficult to differentiate, especially in someone who has been operated on previously.
