Ok so I just took my first MCAT practice test and I got a 33! I really want to get into a top 10 med school, and i know this won't cut it. I am thinking about not taking the MCAT in April and studying all summer so I can take it in August. I have a 3.92GPA and am involved in 13 extracurriculars, including Habitat for Humanity (president) and Students for a Cure (secretary). I also spent the summer treating AIDS patients in Nigeria. Is there anyway I can get in to a good school with a 33 on the MCAT? PLEASE HELP ME!!!

Is this some sort of joke? You're fine, you're perfect, you're probably beautiful and disease-free. Take the MCAT in April.

Well if you want to go to a top ten school a 33 is risky at best. I would recommend skipping the April MCAT to take the August one. It sounds like you have a lot of extravehiculars, but not enough for a top 10 med school. I would say no less than 17. If you add some more activities and improve your MCAT score then you have a good chance at getting into a good school. I would check to see if you could study for the MCAT over the summer while also doing something selfless in another country, such as going to South America to work with cancer patients. That way you're killing 2 birds with 1 stone. Good luck! Hope to see you there at a top med school!

My friend's sister got into Harvard with a 3.3 and 33. Yeah, it's possible.

Oh, and she's white as snow. She did graduate from Harvard undergrad with a bio degree, then did a masters in something where she got a publication, but it's not all about numbers.

Your fine. Stop worrying about your numbers, and try to pick about 5 ECs that you really like rather than getting into 15+. You could be mistaken as a student who just wanted to pad his app, when that really might not have been the case.

Um, does the OP seem like at troll to anyone else?

Unless you can improve significantly, you should be considering a Caribbean school or maybe a DO. You didn't say, but perhaps an intercollegiate sport such as rugby might be a useful addition to your resume. Otherwise, you should lower your sights.

OK I'm new here, but hopefully this is a joke and not the norm on this site

Not just a troll, but an unoriginal, lame troll. 👎 🙁 👎

I think you might want to take a year off to do something really amazing. That way, you can give all of the more normal and down to earth people the spot that they deserve instead of "just settling" for a non top 10 school if you have to.

Why do you want to be a dr. in the first place? Maybe you should evaluate your answer before you actually consider this profession.

the reason people are getting so worked up responding to your 'dilemma' is because either 1) this is a joke or 2) you did not do the proper research to answer your own question. Either one is a waste of other people's time, minimal commitment on your part, and a lack of consideration. THOSE are reasons you might have trouble getting into med schools.

Your stats are fine, and you'd know that if you looked at the average stats in the US News rankings or browsed some of the schools' websites.

Listen:
We all know how to check averages for each school. And being that you come across as a very anal premed, I assume that you have already taken a look at the averages. Do you realize that you could obtain the same verification from pre-med advisors (even though they are usually worthless...but in your case they will kiss your ass...and isnt that what you want anyway?).

Be real...you know those are awesome stats!!!!

I think your biggest problem is gonna be doing well in interviews because you sound crazy

I agree.

I would say don't go by numbers on practice tests anyways b/c I don't think they are good indicators of your final score. Personally, I was receiving 33s and 34s on my practice tests and received a 31 on the real thing, plus I know plenty of people who go in the opposite direction (scores went way up). Take the test based on whether or not you think extra studying will help. Also, if you have a choice, never take the August MCAT in the year that you are applying.

Just my $.02

oy, what is up with the trolls lately? a 33 on your first practice mcat? are you insane? my first practice test was a 26, and i thought that was damn good. do you think your score's going to go down as you practice for 2 more months? dude, if i extrapolated the trend at which you'll be progressing all the way back to august 2005, you'd still have an mcat that many people would sell their grandmothers for.

go seek attention somewhere else, please.

wow this thread is way too discouraging and on the whole...well...not pleasant. don't we all have enough to worry about, in our measly day-to-day lives? i was kinda shocked by joedoctor's post too, but blah there's no point slapping him upside the head about it...i bet you he feels ****ty about it now...and if he doesn't, well then he can do wut he wants, *shrug*, doesn't affect my life in any meaningful way.

hope tomorrow's a better day for all!! 😀

haha, that's hilarious. i didn't know SDN censored "bad" words..and that wasn't even a bad word!!! i'm the least profane person i know!
