I applied to the MS program instead of the MPH program in Health Policy at UMN, but now that I am accepted to the program, and realised that there is no way that I can afford the MS program, since it costs exactly twice as much. Would it hurt me to asked the school if I can change it to MPH? I'm worried that they will tell me 'why did you apply to it in the first place...' Thanks for any comments or advice!!

Changing major varies by school, but many will let you change (from Epidemiology to Social Behavioral Sciences, for example).

You probably cannot change from an MS to an MPH, though. That's changing degrees. At most schools, the MS and PhD are awarded through the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences whereas MPHs are conferred directly from the School of Public Health. Thus you have different admissions committees reviewing applications.

It can't hurt to ask, though.
