If one is URM, does one also have to check the "disadvantaged" box on the AMCAS to gain an edge in the admissions process?

Nope

You need to check the "troll" box on both the AMCAS and the SDN to gain an edge in the admissions process.

I'm not exactly sure, but my guess is no. I believe if you want to be considered a URM, you previously registered with the Med-MAR when you took the MCAT. And I believe Disadvantaged status is more so for socioeconomic reasons.

BTW, what type of proof does one need to provide regarding being a minority?

It is up to the discretion of the medical school. But one good rule of thumb is what the average person in your local community would classify you as.

Hi there,
One can be an URM and not be disadvantaged. One can be disadvantaged and not be an URM. If you feel you meet either of the above categories, check any box you like.

Indeed. I recall this mouthy black kid in one of my discussion courses giving some mini-spiel on white privilege etc. A day or two later, I saw him climb into his car, a brand new 60k+ suburban with gold-etched rims.

which begs the question: can someone be both advantaged and disadvantaged? There are always URM's and ORM's...but what about PERFECTLY EVENLY REPRESENTED minorities?

The AMCAS ask for your profile before the age of 18 when you click on disadvantage. If you grew up disadvantage... ie...poor (government housing, government assistance), live in a medically underserved community....up until about 19.... then your family became a little better off just in the past say 6 or 7 years.... would you still want to call yourself disadvantaged under the AMCAS...but personally you might not consider yourself disadvantage right at this moment in your life?
