We all know that when applying to med school URM's have an advantage over non-URM applicants. However, is this also the case for residencies and the match? Will programs most likely take a URM over a non-URM just because they are URM even if the stats are similar or the URM has slightly lower stats? Or by this time is the playing field leveled and everyone has the same opportunity?

thank you

Sundevil - As I understand it, URM status does not play a role in the residency application process/match. However, depending on the region of the country we are taking about, factors like language skills may help (i.e. all other things being equal, if you speak spanish you MIGHT have a leg up on other applicants applying for competitive residencies in, say Arizona or California). I'm sure others on this board know more than I do and will correct me if I'm wrong though. 🙂

thanks for the info jargon. You seem to know what I am getting at  . Actually, the URM deal wouldn't help me anyway, I'm not URM. Hopefully the spanish thing will help, but I'm not counting on it. I already know that good boards, recs, research and AOA will be the main factors. I should probably worry about the next four years first though.
