Good Morning,

My stats...
3.7 GPA
25P MCAT

I have been accepted to a DO school in US.

I am applying to DO and MD schools in US. I am also applying to MUN in Canada. I need your help in comparing the success as a medical student hoping to gain a surgical residency if I went to the DO school in US versus MUN in Canada.

Are my chances of getting an allopathic residency in US higher if I get MD degree from a Canadian school or if I get a DO degree from a US school?

Are Canadian students that are US citizens applying to US residencies considered International Medical Graduates or are they in the same pool as students from US medical schools?

Will I need to get a Canadian Student Visa to reside and study in Canada?

Will USMLE suffice as the licensing exam or will I need to take the Canadian licensing exam?

Are Stafford loans provided for Canadian medical schools?

Any information you are able to share will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
🙂

Firstly, you will not get into Memorial with a 25 on the MCAT. Their average is 10 on each section and Q in writing sample. I don't think...wait...I know there is not a school in the country that will take you with an MCAT score like that. Try rewriting, and if you get over 30, think about applying.

I got mid 30s MCAT, decent GPA, and I couldn't get into any school in Canada, so now I'm doing my MD in the United States. As you will see, admission to Canadian medical schools is much more difficult than American medical schools....1 in 4 success rate in Canada opposed to 1 in 2 success rate in the United States.

Why did you pick MUN? They might have lower averages than other schools, but these lower averages are due to IP applicants, not OOP.

Just take the DO acceptance and be happy with that route. 25 is too low for any MD schools that consider the MCAT unless you've colonized another planet outside of the Solar System or something.
