Hey Everyone,

Sorry, I know this question has been asked before, but every situation is different, so I tought I'd ask it again and hopefully get answers/insight pertinent to my situation.

So I'm a US citizen who went to a Caribbean medical school where I graduated from last year and got into a prestigious two year research fellowship through the NIH in otolaryngology. My research involves both basic science and clinical research (I have a few publications on the way now where I will be first author), and I will be presenting at an ENT society meeting later this year. I have volunteered with craniofacial surgeons from the US traveling to third world countries since I was in high school.

My stats are as follows: Step 1 - 256, Step 2 - 267 - but I failed the CS the first time I took it (ugh, I was really really sick) but passed it the second time. My basic science grades from med school aren't really that great but my third and fourth year clinical grades are much better. My lor's are from PD's in otolaryngology, and I still shadow them in the OR whenever I can get away from the lab and clinic.

Is there anything else I can do to make myself stronger in the applicant pool? Will the failed CS totally destroy me? What about the grades? I've invested so much of myself into wanting this career that I'm freaked out by the notion that I might have to do something else. As an aside, what about doing a prelim year in surgery and then applying? Is that feasible?

Thanks so much for you input and help in advance.

If your LORs are from program directors, then obviously you have worked hard to establish strong relationships with them.

I think they would be much better at answering your questions than anyone on this board.
