US MD practicing in India?

My fiancee is a citizen of the Republic of India and some day I desire to go back to my country of origin as well. I am attending medical school in the US so I will be conferred an MD. After residency and paying off my loans etc, would it be possible for me to go back to India and practice there? Would I have to take licensing exams and do a residency there before I can practice? Or would it be pretty easy to start practicing there and not have to complete another residency?

I'm still a pre med here in the US but I've lived in India for 15 years and have many friends over there who have just finished their MBBS...So i have some idea of how things are there at the moment...

Recently the Indian Medical Council (I think that's what they're called) made certain amendments and now it is possible for people from the United States with M.D. degrees to practice in India...The difference is that in India people have to give another set of exams to get into the M.D. program (which comes after MBBS)...this M.D. program is equivaent to the residency period in the US. If you gain admission to an M.D. program then based on your rank in the resepective exam you will get to choose the field you want to specialize in...

If you have already finished your residency here then you wont have to repeat it over there... I am however unsure of the exam part...You might have to take a licensing exam at the most (this is just a guess!)

I am actually planning to do the same thing...Like you I plan to finish med school here in the US... pay off my loans etc and then move to India...

I read this thing in the news a couple of months ago that India is now making it easier for docs from the US and other places to come back to India and practice there ...looking at the state of the country's health system I am not surprised that this has happened....Just think that its a little late and why didnt they do this earlier...

Anyway...Yes you can go back...you wont have to redo your residency but might have to give a licensing exam...

The Pay Scale is hard to determine...If you are in a public/government hospital then the salary wont be too high (though it would be good by government standards and there are a few perks to it...)

If you get a job in a private hospital then as far as I know the salary is negotiable...Depending on the hospital it could be very good or average...I am not giving you any figures here because I dont really know and also because if you start comparing even the best salaries in India it wont look that great when you convert it into dollars...

But believe me...I know a LOT of Doctors in India and they live great lives (i.e. as good as money can get you...)

If you start a private practice then again you'll make quite a lot of money but it could vary depending on where you live...Usually the people in cities make more than what they would if they were living in a small Indian town (again...the small town life might have other perks and idiosyncratic benefits...and would usually be way cheaper as far as living expenses would be concerned)

I have another concern:-

Are you eligible to practice in India after getting your MD from a caribbean medical school (MD course of these schools includes: 5 semesters of theoretical studies, and 5 semesters of clinical rotations in US/Canada hospitals) but not doing residency after that.
In other words, if I have a hard time finding residencies in US or Canada after my MD, can I do my residency in Indian hospitals, and thereafter apply for license in India?

Has anyone done this ever, please refer and/or advice...
