Hey dr midnight, I interviewed on the 22nd also. glad to hear your interview went well.

oh my gosh!!! Congrats Hopes! 🙂 🙂

I was waiting for one of us to get mail!!!

My letter should be coming tomorrow hopefully, it didn't come today or yesterday.... I am sooooo nervous.

Hey dr midnight, I interviewed on the 22nd also. glad to hear your interview went well.

do I know you? did we run in to each other on our interview. I am very excited about USC I hope I get in. I really want to stay on the west coast and be closer to my family.. waiting is terrible. good luck😍

does anyone know when Adcom meets? I know they sent out accep mid March and again mid April... does this mean mid May????? with May 15 approaching I am getting nerv... they interview until april 22 1 more week. do the meet after all interviews are done. don't they have to give you 2 weeks to decide?????? any ideas?????:scared:

placed on the alternative list... can anyone offer any solace?

That sucks.🙁🙁🙁🙁

Do you have any other acceptances to fall back on? I hope so from what I understand at this point there isn't much movement on their waitlist (can anyone correct me).

BTW when did you interview?

I overheard one of the students on my interview day say that the waitlist does move, and I think it moves just as much as other schools. Now, whether we hear May 16th or August 1, I don't know. (anyone have ideas?)

Alternate list 🙁 Sigh....

But it's okay. I'm still gonna hope and keep my fingers crossed.

It'll happen! Right? Right 🙄

Does anyone know if people are still getting in or is getting on the alternate list as good as it gets at this point?

Anyone know the breakdown on the interview stats for accepted/waitlist/rejected. I just interviewed and want to know my chances. Then also just in case does I make it even to the waitlist how many matriculants make it from the waitlist? I would imagine that there would be considerable movement there since the UC schools probably pluck up students left and right.

abandon all hope ye who enter the keck waitlist

oh- to answer the questions: No I have no other acceptances to fall back on. USC was seriously the school for me. I have to try again next year (so in other words.. i'll apply again in 2 months). I plan on retaking the mcat to raise my scores.

Also, I interviewed on Feb. 19... methinks.

i interviewed on the 21st. I was the only one with a gray suit. Wouldn't it be funny if I moved to LA and volunteered at LAC post-rejection?

OR is that desperate and weird? So many options to consider...

Does anyone know if the waitlist letter is personalized?

My letter was so sweet.... Even though it was telling me I'm an alternate, it built up my self-esteem and made me feel semi-okay 🙄 AND it made me want to go there even more, if that's even possible!!

oh keck... 😍

sigh

Hi guys!
For all those of you who are on the alternate list, hang in there, you still have a really good shot. I'm a 2nd year at Keck, and my year, a ton of people (like half of the list) got accepted. Last year it was similar. For me, I interviewed in February, got alternate listed, and then got in on June 1st. The waitlist moves slowly, a person at a time, but it definitely moves.

Also, just FYI, if you're on the list, your fate no longer lies in the ADCOM's hands. One person selects students off the list, and that person is the Dean of Admissions (and nicest person in the world), Dr Quinn. It's true that the list is unranked.

So.....now is the time to beef up your files. Send in those letters updating all the awesome things you've been up to. Tell Dr Quinn all about your commitment to serving the County population, the cool research you've been doing, the volunteer work you're into, etc. Remember that USC is a place that values physicians who are committed to the underserved, health care reform, and understanding the cultural and socioeconomic determinants of health.

Good luck

Okay, I've been keeping up with several different threads on SDN for awhile now...I guess that makes me a lurker, but I was inspired to create an account because I've noticed a troll roaming around here.

Hasn't anyone noticed that dr midnight and braintrust are the same person?? The best part is that they...or rather he/she...is having a conversation with himself/herself in the above postings!! LMAO

I withdrew from Keck today. I will be attending UCSD SOM 🙂 I hope one of you gets my spot!!!

:luck::luck:Good luck to all those on the waitlist!!!:luck::luck:

Sorry for the change of topic, but does anyone have any housing advice? I'd like to live in a relatively modern place near the medical campus.

There are a bunch of places to live - it really depends on what you're looking for.

A lot of first years typically live in Monterey Hills since it's really close to campus, but most of them leave after one year because there's not much to do around there. Some people live downtown - it's still really close, and there's lots to do, but it tends to be a bit more expensive, and downtown is still not that great of a neighborhood after dark. Quite a few people live in Los Feliz (me! 😀) or Silverlake - it's about a 15 minute drive to campus, lots to do, and you can find some really nice, safe neighborhoods. There's also the west side, like Santa Monica or Venice. The commute is more like 40 minutes, but it's still totally doable, and you get to live near the beach.

Other options include Alhambra, Pasadena, South Pasadena, Hancock Park/mid-Wilshire, and Glendale.

And good luck to the alternate list people! 😀 :luck:

Thank you Chicklett 🙂 That is so super nice of you!

I am crossing my fingers. I would go to USC in a heartbeat. It's gonna be tough waiting now, and hoping!

Sophie... One thing I'm wondering is this: Is there anything between the west side and USC? Like if I want to live closer to the beach side, but also don't want a 40 minute commute to school. Are any of the places you mentioned kind of halfway? I was leaning towards Pasadena, but that's even more inland 🙄 Sorry if this is a wierd question, I guess I was hoping for the best of both worlds!

Oh and do you recommend (if I get in!!) coming and doing a second look type thing and scouting out somewhere? I keep hearing Los Feliz is nice, like you said. It's so wierd being out here in Chicago and dreaming about living over there.

I guess this is jumping into the unknown future, but a girl can dream 🙄

Thank you!

I totally agree with lavenderdoll88 thanks chicklett. I've breifly met Dr Quinn during my interview visit and even had a very short and sweet excahnge via email when I got back home. She really is a kind and easy going person. If there had to be a single person at admissions that would pick students from the waitlist I'm glad it is her. I haven't met too many people outside the admission dept but those I have met are some of the happiest people I've seen at a med school, must be all the sun and "the tasty waves dude":laugh::laugh:

It's kind of funny you ask that, because I was trying to find something mid-way between USC (east) and UCLA (west) before I decided on Los Feliz. Your options are really limited if you're aiming for something halfway. Mid-Wilshire is in between, but scary. Hancock Park is in between and nice, but expensive. I'd cross off pretty much everything south of the 10 and east of the 405. West Hollywood is kind of in between, but far north, and the commute would probably take just as long as if you lived in Santa Monica due to all of the street driving before you're able to get on the freeway. I gave up on finding a place in between, but I'm not that familiar with most of LA, so it's possible there's a good area somewhere in there. You could try asking the people at http://www.city-data.com/forum/los-angeles/ . There's an overwhelmingly negative attitude towards LA on that forum, but they do tend to know their stuff pretty well.

If you can afford it I would definitely suggest coming to LA before school starts to scout out a place to live. If you can't afford it, I'm sure some of your classmates will be posting ads in June and July in the housing mailers USC sends out, and you can just leave the scouting to them (hopefully they can send you pictures and descriptions of the areas they look at).

And, obviously, always keep dreaming. 😀 I was one of the MANY people in my class pulled off of the alternate list in June, and I know someone who was accepted two days before class started. So this is still way too early to be counting any options out.

Hey guys. I just wanted to announce that I declined my offer of admissions from Keck just now. I hope one of you guys gets my spot soon so you can make it to the second look. GL :luck:.

Hi! I live in Hancock Park/Mid-Wilshire area (Miracle Mile) and love it! It's super central to everything: Hollywood, beach cities, USC HSC, WeHo....everywhere is pretty close. I'm about 90% sure I'm gonna stay living here next year while going to SC.

Thank you for your info. How far from school are you? what is the traffic like? also what is the rent like? are places hard to find? I hope I get in but have no clue on where to stay I am oos but have family in the valley and my grandmother has a small apt in Santa Monica. I could stay with them for a very short time. I am still waiting to hear if I get in. I hope to join you next year.

I got put on the alternate list today. The waiting begins.... I really want to get into Keck

When did you interview? How did you get your decision? Via snail mail or email? Thanks.

Snail mail. The letter is postmarked 4/21. I interviewed in the middle of February. I sent in an update letter in march along with an additional LOR, so I don't know if that delayed the review of my application.

Well good luck. I interviewed April 8 and waiting for a decision.

I have also been placed on the alternate list...soo disappointing. I went to USC undergrad and one of my professors who has been part of their ADCOM in the past assured me that usc "would never let me go" I am also on the waitlist at UCSD...I guess I should have applied to more than four schools! I don't know about you guys but May 15th couldn't come soon enough

just withdrew my acceptance. hope it goes to one of you!

I know that around two weeks ago they were still reviewing applications. But I thought that they would be done by now. Who knows-hopefully you will get accepted because last year they didn't accept anyone off the waitlist

I called the office today to check up on the LOI I sent and I was told that they don't take very many students from the wait-list. I don't know why Dr.Quinn said they take 60- I wish they did but that sounds high. Have you called the office to ask when you may hear about your status?

Well, I can't really speak for certain but I think I'm about 10 miles from USC, and it took me about 35 minutes to get there on second look day (I left around 8:00). The traffic is bad...but you won't find anywhere that's not. It usually takes me about 30-40 minutes to get to Westwood for work (where UCLA is, about 5 miles away). I would discourage living in the valley very strongly...it would take you like 2 hours to get to class! Santa Monica wouldn't be toooooo bad. Very great place to live, but still quite a ways from USC. As far as rent goes, I pay 1450 for a one-bedroom (I share it with my bf), but I don't think two-bedrooms are too much higher and are pretty reasonable if you share. At second look, some of the students said that in addition to Los Feliz, Hollywood, and parts of the westside, many students live in Pasadena as well, which makes sense.
Umm...I think that's it! Good luck!!!

Thank you all for the information.... I hope I can return the favor..... I will call the school this week to check when they will let us know.... I must stay positive.....😀 I have to finish my classes to graduate. I know I have options...... hope to see you all next year😀

it has been 3 weeks for me I was wondering if they would let me know before May 15th If I got in so I called.... they wouldn't tell me when adcom was meeting but they would let me know by the 15th that is all they would tell me with out getting too pushy...... I hope this means a few days before. a week or two would be nice... does anyone else want to call????? dyeing for information please😀

I don't know if they mail the letter this week if we will receive it next week. i heard for some odd reason it takes a long time to get thru the USC mail system. like 7-10 business days.
