Don't worry if you haven't received any in-state interviews yet. This is my first in-state interview as well. Seems like Cali Dental Schools take their time with their admission process. I know for a fact that we won't be hearing anything from UCLA anytime soon (At least not till late Oct).
Anyways....here are the answers to your questions:
-Got it via e-mail.
-No! My AADSAS status has not changed yet (Doesn't seem like AADSAS is doing a good job in terms of keeping our records updated).
-Yes! Got it like 20 minutes ago.

I hope you get an interview too.:xf:

Got one as well and scheduled it for Nov. 5th.

Ok guys I just got home from the Nova interview, and got this letter that my friend mentioned to me as well about being a post-interview candidate at USC. Lol after reading this thing it sounded like I got waitlisted or something but after looking on SDN from previous years, I found this thread:

http://forums.studentdoctor.net/showthread.php?t=570831

So I'm assuming everyone will get this letter after you interview in a timely manner? I'm not sure, but I'll just fill it out and go with it. After your interviews at USC, please update if you guys get this letter so we can see if they give it out to everyone after the interview. They request to fill out this blue sheet to suggest that you're still interested in USC.

By the way, I live in Los Angeles, so if any of you guys are staying in Westwood area, I could probably give you a ride to school.
PM me and let me know!

Flying to cali is so expensive....

You wanna stay as far away from the school, because the school is located in a rough neighborhood!
My Suggestion:
Stay at Downtown LA Marriott. It's about 4 miles away (~9 minutes...Without traffic).
Here's the link:
http://www.marriott.com/hotels/travel/laxdt-los-angeles-marriott-downtown/

Best = http://www.radisson.com/losangelesca_midtown
Right across the street from campus and 5-7 min walk to dental building. Safe, and half of the floors are actually used to house USC undergrad.

2nd = http://www.vagabondinn.com/propdesc/FindHotel/HotelDetails.aspx?hotel=307
A block or 2 away from campus. Probably a 10 min walk to the dental building.

You will not have any trouble or fear for you safety walking to and from the interview from either of these locations. However at 2am, that's another story.

Thanks for the tip, my concern was where to reside for the night around USC. I'll definitely check those out.

Hey! I just received my interview invites today.
When I saw the email it was already 5:30, so I couldn't schedule the time.

But I'm planning on scheduling on Oct.14 as well.

so that means I'll get to meet you in person =)

btw, the PDF file that I received from USC can not be edited.
Is it just for me? Or is everyone facing the same problem?

Should we hand write those essay questions?

Cool.
I'm looking forward to that🙂

Congrats nze...

Hopefully I can hear anything from them... The application fee has been transferred and hopefully is in-progress now!!!

When I called to schedule my interview the guy who answered my call told me that I should print out all the forms, fill them, and bring them with me. So, I'm guessing handwritten is fine!

I'm thinking about holding off the scheduling for USC since I don't intend on traveling to Cali twice just incase UoP extends an offer sometime soon. Anyone thinking along the same line to save some money from the flight?

Hey,
I'm a first year at USC. If you have any questions, let me know!

I am curious about the PBL session is going to work. I am familiar with PBL, however, in the experiences that I had with it (not during interviews) we were presented with a case and assigned research topics on the first day. Then on the next day we returned with our research, presented it to the group, and worked through the case, then went out and did more research if need be. As I understand it, for the interview we do not get the case ahead of time? And do not get an opportunity to do any research while we are at the interview/before we discuss it? So how does that work? What kind of cases/topics do we get and how does that part of the interview work? Also, is it true that there is no formal interview -- you are evaluated based on your performance during the PBL session and the questionaire you submit?

You are exactly right about PBl....thats how it works during the year, but not at the interview. At the interview, it is "mock"...meaning its a very simple case that you will easily come up with ideas about. The point of it is to just make sure you will be comfortable with this type of learning since it is a major part of USC dental school. You will be fine...it is not stressful at all...and kind of fun! Just make sure you speak up and talk, but also allow others to talk. You want them to think you are a good "team member."

Hey thanks for taking the time out to answer some of our questions? I have heard there have been big changes at USC in the last couple of years would you be able to let us know what they're doing to make the school better and improve their graduation rate?

I just got my interview invite today! Yay! This is going to be my first interview and it's in two weeks. I'm nervous! There was only 5 dates I could choose from and this was the latest one out of all of them. I've read that they have a PBL session as part of their interview process, so does that mean there will be no one on one interview? They won't ask us questions about dentistry and our application? Any advice on how to prepare for it would be appreciate. Thanks for any help! 🙂

Sheesh, I just looked at the ADEA guide and realized that USC "interviewed" 350 applicants and accepted 322 for the class of 2012. Maybe I should've applied.

do you mind to share more on this?
I have older edition, ADEA Official Guide to Dental Schools 2008 For Students Entering in Fall 2009 and this one does not give you acceptance numbers but only enrolled number (which is usually lot less than acceptance numbers since many students get into more than one school and decline) and numbers I have are:

In-state - 1327 applicants, 269 interviewed, 94 enrolled
Out-of-state - 1840 applicants, 246 interviewed, 50 enrolled

i am trying to see if they always offered lot of acceptances but many of them have declined due to high tuition / other issues or is it just a typo? (I have found some of these errors in my book).

it would be sweet if they did accept 322 out of 350 interviewed tho but it just sounds too good to be true..

I dont think this is true because the predents stats were nowhere near this, although its given that predents is not accurate but a ~95% acceptance rate would somewhat correlate with the data on predents

And predents is currently down so cant confirm it either, damn

Here are the stats given by the ADEA guide table 3-2:

IN-STATE
#Applied 1240 #Interviewed NR #Accepted 162
OUT-OF-STATE
#Applied 1911 #Interviewed NR #Accepted 160

So they don't give you the number of applicants they interviewed, but if you flip over to the USC info page:

#Applied 3151
#Interviewed 350
#Enrolled 144

1911 + 1240 = 3151, so you know the stats refer to the same year.

If this is still true than wow, i HOPE i get an interview....

Its still hard to believe a ~95% acceptance rate, but i guess so( its cuz they are probably the most expensive school in the country!)

There's also the possibility of a typo. Given previous year's data maybe they actually interviewed 450 or even 550 students.

Yea thats probably the case, also they might have changed things up cuz for a school who wants to fill 1/4 of the class filled in increments, they are sending ALOT of predec interviews out so i dont see how the numbers can work out...

I would like to know about that too.
I got my invitation today and I'm going to schedule it on 11/11 (can't believe they do interviews on a school holiday). Since it's a short notice and I have my midterms and papers coming up this and next week, I won't really have time to prepare. But if it is going to be PBL only, then I probably don't need to prepare at all?

I see you there, I got my interview invite there on Tuesday as well, and I schedule my interview for the 11/11. Since, it is short notice, and the interview is around the corner I decided to go on the holiday, so that I don’t have to miss a day of work since I am a chemistry/physics teacher.

269 plus 246 makes 515. I would believe 350 is typo as in post interview package they stated appr 500 students will be classified as post interview candidates. So out of 500 interviewees 322 acceptances and 100-150 waitlist makes sense.
Class of 144 people will require at least 288 acceptances as USC is one of the most expensive schools so yield can not be more than 50% for this reason alone. So sending for each seat 2,5 acceptances makes a good sense to me. What does not particularly makes sense- statement about forming their class by 1/4 pre Dec and then in quaters to follow. This would mean that they would interview 125 people only pre Dec. I do not remember exact numbers but predents had something like 70? people registered so providing predents is only a small part of all applicants I would think they are interviewing around 300 people pre Dec and 200 after. So they interview pre Dec 300 people but send Dec 1 only 80 acceptances, then they interview some more but re review pre Dec people again and send again 80 acceptances end of Dec and so forth. So intital pre Dec applicants might be reviewed several times and received their acceptance Jan... that makes sense and some schools do follow this strategy

Interviewed there earlier this month, I personally wasnt too impressed with the school but thats my opinion. I stayed at the Willshire Inn on Wilshire Blvd, about 15 minutes from the school with traffic. I wouldnt suggest that hotel, somewhat of a shady hotel and they charge you a ridiculous surprise 15% bed tax when you check out!!!! Any way they can screw ya I guess. I rented a car and had no issues navigating the city. Pretty easy city to navigate in my opinion. When you park there, be sure to get checked in and not park in the ramp, which is in the same parking lot that you are supposed to park in. I thought you drive in and when you leave, you pay the guy for how long you stayed, well I walked out to a $50 parking ticket from the school. It was on a rental, so hopefully they dont track that, otherwise Ill be wanted in the state of california in like 20 years!

Sounds about right. ~300-350 acceptances issued. THe reason they mention 1/4 dec 1st etc. is that they are only able to fill that % of the class. Pre-dec1st interviews are usualy the best students so of the 100 acceptances they give out only ~25% will send in deposits. But then again in the past, they used to interview late into May which would fill the last 25% of the class but that is not the case anymore. USC ends their interviews by March.

Hi,
I'm a first year at USC. I just wanted to clarify that there is not a 95% acceptance rate. For the class of 2013, approximately 600 were interviewed. We were not told how many were accepted, but I know it is nowhere near 95%. From my interview, I kept in touch with a few other applicants...2 out of 5 were accepted.

Interview process at USC:
information sessions about USC, PBL, financial aid, etc.
tour of the dental school
lunch with upperclassmen
mock PBL session - not stressful at all see my other post above
writing sample - very simple..takes about 10 minutes

The interview is focused on selling USC to the applicant as well as making sure that you understand what PBL is and that it is a major part of the curriculum. USC doesn't interview a huge percentage of its' applicants...so basically, you have already impressed USC. During the interview day, you need to figure out whether USC would be a good fit for you...and the interviewers will try to do the same.

I hope this helped and feel free to ask me any questions!

Just got my USC interview notice by email! Yes!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I didnt get the chance to interview 11/11. I would have liked that date too. I scheduled mine for 11/10.
