I don't know what holiday you guys are talking about but 11/11 is just a normal day.
PBL is a method of learning that enables you to think, use critical, analytic, and common sense skills. The real basis of it is so that you aren't just memorizing facts and regurgitating them on tests. PBL is just a process and it helps you to figure out things using REASONING skills (i.e. X happens because of Y therefore it leads to Z is just one example). PBL can be used clinically or academically science based. Of course you can learn the same stuff through lectures but I find the group interaction to be better for a lot of reasons. One of the best aspects is that you get feedback immediately. If you don't know something you just ask someone in your group. It makes actual learning and retaining of information that much better. The problem also with lectures is that makes people lazy. You can ditch, watch the lecture at home later or just not pay attention while in class. You end up learning everything on your own at home anyway. In PBL you can slack and dick around but at least it puts you in a situation where you are vulnerable not only to yourself in front of faculty but also your peers. Basically PBL forces you to "try."
OF COURSE, PBL is not for everyone. A lot of people complain about it but a lot of people like it. I fall somewhere in the middle. Sometimes I wished I had lectures but at the same time I know i'd either be dicking around on my phone or just ditching all together.
Anyway, MAKE SURE you enjoy your interview at USC. IF you come out finding yourself second guessing even going to the interview then you probably should not attend if accepted. At USC, you won't get the best value for your money but that's just the way it works. If you don't want to have that 400k debt, stop complaining because there are a lot of others that are willing to accept that. Finally if you not sure about PBL then it's not for you. Come in with an open mind and if your expectations are not met then don't turn in the post secondary interview form because someone else will eventually. We want new positive students and those that are willing to try it out with positive expectations. There are too many negative people already here at USC, a lot of them are vocal about it and it just drags down the people around them. Trust me, those that are constantly complaining are not the most popular or brightest students.
But in all fairness, PBL has its moments of "WTF" but everyone gets through it and does well. You're only in PBL for 2 years and then it slowly phases out as you enter clinic. You also learn most of your preclinical skills in the simulation lab as well. PBL just integrates some information. Everything is integrated so to say. Good luck to those really interested in USC, you'll be fine! 🙂
