hey amillot

can you please tell us what procedures you were asked to perform in the practical exam and are they very critical and specific with their prep requirements?
if you can also tell us more about the PBL discussion that would be great. what was your topic and what is PBL all about

please tell us about your experience with the group interview. that will give us an idea of what is to come.

how many people per group?

how much time is given?

topics?

is this in front of several doctors or one?

for the practical, it is noted that the instruments are all not 'required', but recommended. do you recomend the slow speed, hatchet and chisels to complete the preps??? or is the high speed enough? (i think so)

thanks amillot

Chompers and az646:

Here is some info.
The procedures that I was asked to perform in the practical exam were a class II amalgam prep on an upper bicuspid, a PFM prep on a upper central incisor and an onlay prep on a lower molar. As what they want to know is your skills in restorative and prosthodontic preparations, I guess that they are very critical and specific with their prep requirements at the time they check your preps,.
I absolutely recomend the slow speed hand piece and the chisels to finish your preps because you don't have control of the details with high speed. However, you guys will need your high speed to begin all of your preps.
Now, talking about PBL (Problem Based Learning) discussion the topic is not always dentistry related because what they really want to determine is the candidates comunication skills and their ability to interact in a team to help solve problems. There is no individual but group interview (10-12 people) interacting with each other and one or two moderators (not necesarily doctors).
I hope this info is helpfull
See you guys soon.

thanks for all the info and good luck to you fir the interview. hope we all get thru it. 🙂

You will need only cutting instruments, forget about filling instruments and the typodont you will be able to turn it upside down when cutting on upper teeth. 😉

Scarletfever:
I have no idea 😕 on what they are going to ask us to prepare this year, they could ask for anything about restorative or fixed prosthodontics so we have a lot to practice, also I don't know if last year they asked for the same preps than the year before. :luck:

Gaura Nitai:
No I didn't take the Duggans course, but when you call me I can give you some simple hints on practicing.
Anybodey else who want to talk by phone me please send me a private message with your phone # and I will be glad to talk to you about it. 🙂

No issues taking handpiece/burs in the carry on luggage. If you are bringing anything sharp though, you may be stopped at the security check point and asked to check in your bags. Handpieces/burs are not a concern though.

Hi friends,
Please suggest how should one prepare for the interview at usc on 7th.
What points should be kept in mind while discussing the PBL topic.
