I am originally from Texas..and I am comtemplating between USC and Buffalo.. which one should I choose and Why???? Thank you guy~~

Buffalo. I visited there this dec and i loved it. its AMAZING. you will ahve so many opportunities there. its over 100 years old so its super established and your 4 years will go smoothly. another plus is you have YOUR OWN chair for clinic. its unheard of anywhere else. at USC you have to fight for chairs and patients so you dont graduate on time. BUffalo- its sUPER cheap. usc is ridiculously expensive for your educations worth. buffalo is the best kept secret out there. i live in los angeles and i would not go to USC. 30% board pass rates and students not finishing on time is something you might want to consider, along with the ridiculous tuition. i saw buffalo all the way if you can live through the weather.

100% buffalo.

Hands down, Buffalo. The tuition difference alone should convince you.

I suppose if one keeps repeating false claims about USC it makes it true. Sort of like chain whispering where everyone whispers in the next person's ear and the message is totally garbled at the end.

"30 % board pass rate"
Where that come from? Which board? National Boards? Part 1 or Part 2? Western Regional Board? California Board? Cite your source or don't pass on nonsense.

I think some of these statistics get exaggerated every time they are passed from pre-dent to pre-dent here on SDN. I can assure you it isn't for Part 1 or the WREB (which we do very, very well on), but at least it is better than what our "on-time" grad rate was for the class of 2007. 😉 (a lot more to that story too than just the statistic).

To the OP:
Even though I go to USC and enjoy the many perks, you can get instate tuition at Buffalo after the first year. Do the math on the money you save and your jaw will drop!

I had the same problem before, and I decide to go to buffalo due to cheap tuition and ppl are super nice there. I did not even pay deposit for USC. I think it's hard to make decision, but both schools are nice ^^

since he is from texas...out of state tuition + all expenses amount to $65,000 at buffalo.

its is all right here.

not that much of a long stretch from USC...

Plus there is more stuff around USC (more clubs/ more extra curricular/more people/ more city) [I live around USC so I would know]

Buffalo is deserted and its damn cold from (december till may) - humid after that for several months as well

USC's tuition for the first year alone is $65,000. Their total estimated cost of attendance for year 1 is $101,974. I would say that $35,000+ per year is a bit of a long stretch. Not to mention that he will be able to claim NY residency after the first year, so his total cost of attendance at UB for year 2 would be $42149 compared to USC's $99,573.

If he goes to Buffalo, his total estimated cost of attendance will be $185,511. His total estimated cost of attendance at USC would be $367,009.

Not much of a stretch? I would say that double the estimated cost is a bit of a long stretch.

Here's your link to USC:

Remember that Buffalo is one of those hidden gem schools that allow students to establish in-state residency after the first year.

If you do the math with the link you provided, then the 4 year total (1 out of state rate + 3 in-state years) would be $185,511.

That's quite a savings as compared to the $367,279 out the door price for USC.

Attending Buffalo would therefore be a savings of $181,768 or ~%50 off of a dental education at USC! 😱

(all numbers given account for costs outside of general tuition including room, board, equipment, etc.)

I would go to dental school whereever I got in that was cheap that being said USC is great but expensive.

if you are curious about life outside of dental school..i grew up and have spent my whole life in blo and have not grown sick of it. granted, its not nyc, chicago, or la but toronto is only 90 miles away if you need to spend time in a big city. buffalo has restaurants, bars, shopping, sports and plenty of young people. goodluck

Buffalo of course, even if you want to live in So Cal.

Upenn08...you are a joke and provide no real help to anyone.

BUFFALO. unless you really love PBL and the so-cal, don't go to USC

👍

what could someone do with saving $181k? Nice start into a practice, house, etc. Half the student loan payments and less interest accurring....

Oooh... I forgot about interest accruing while in school. Since more will accrue while at USC, you can probably bump that difference between schools over the 200K mark.

Buffalo all day, better school and cheaper...only thing worse is the weather. Purchase a house by summer, apply for residency and then take the 16k you would have spent on out of state tuition, put it as a down payment on a 100,000k duplex. Rent out the other half, let it pay your mortgage. Enjoy the cheap cost of living and tuition. Your 4 year education should cost you around 170k.

hey, regmata thanks for the information.

could you be more specific about the residency after buying a house and also how much usually is?

I don't know all of the details, but if you buy property early enough, you can get instate your 1st year. This area is so economically depressed that the housing fiasco hasn't really even hit here...market is in tact and cheap. You can get a decent duplex near the school for cheap or a single family home...whatever you desire. I would contact admissions to ask for information.

a. Congrats! I know about four people besides myself who are New York state residents who had good stats who got either waitlisted or outright rejected, so high five, sir/madam!

b. Buffalo. It's cheaper. I've been struggling with the Nice Tuition/Nice Location question (between UMDNJ and Tufts), and even though I LOVE boston, UMDNJ's low tuition isn't losing appeal no matter what I try to set against it in my mind. I don't know when you interviewed, but even in the winter the campus looked nice because of the older architectural design, the library was beautiful, and you get your own chair! The faculty was pretty cool too. During lunch I had one former faculty member and one of the science professors hanging out talking about some student/faculty party they'd gone to and they were really friendly and definitely knew the students. The dentist I interned with also went there and he loves it. My parents keep telling me to not worry about the cost because I'll eventually make it back, but thinking of setting up a practice or buying in, a house mortgage, car payments, etc, let alone the possibility of specializing makes me want to save money however I can. My opinion: unless there's something you ABOLUTELY ADORE about USC, go Buffalo.

Hope that helped, good luck with the decision. 🙂

Just pretend you're living in LA and pay the same for an apartment in Buffalo. Not only will you still save money over USC, you'll have a palatial estate in Buffalo with a manservant instead of a cramped 2 bedroom with 4 roommates.
If you quoted this to point out how wrong I am, turn your sarcasm detector to "obvious"

:meanie: So true I am paying for the LA apartment and wishing I had a cheaper place to live. The school is great but the price is not.

If I get into a residency in a place that has a modest cost of living, the fact that I'm so desensitized to rent costs is going to have me living alone in a 3br/3ba house or SMT.

Buffalo hands down 200k, thats so much money plus its a great program, weather might suck a little, but 200k for sun??? that's absurd go with buffalo!
