I sent a post-interview thank you note, and then I realized that I addressed the interviewer (MD) as Ms. instead of Dr.

Is this a serious mistake? Should I send a quick email apologizing this mistake?

I would really appreciate your reply!

That sucks.

But it's a thank you note. Even if she did care (which she certainly shouldn't), her evaluation has most likely been turned in well before she gets the note. This is much different than calling her "Miss" in the interview, which is a bit unprofessional and during the time you are well aware you're being evaluated, particularly for things like professionalism.

I sent a short follow up email apologizing the mistake. (I might have worried too much, but I still wanted to apologize nevertheless) Just like you said, hopefully it is not a big deal because it's a thank-you note!

Thanks a lot for your response, @NoDakDok

Now she knows you're neurotic and will turn in a poor evaluation. Ya dun goofed

@Avicenna come on, really? it's still a mistake, so I think you should acknowledge your mistake and apologize for it...
(not writing a whole paragraph about it but simply apologizing)

I realize it's too late now (and so should you), but don't do something like this again. Apologizing for something that wasn't really a mistake to begin with can be seen as pandering.

1. A female calling another female Ms won't be as regarded as as much of a snub as a male calling a female doctor Ms.
2. The follow up email was a bit on the neurotic side but probably will be of no consequece. I wouldn't do it again.

"Ms." is just as correct as "Dr." in this case. She probably didn't bat an eye at it.

In my honest opinion, your follow-up email probably comes off as neurotic.

At the other end of the spectrum, I think that calling a woman who is an MD with whom you have a professional relationship "Ms." instead of "Dr." is rude and disrespectful. Without knowing your interviewer's attitude on the subject, you had the option of appearing "not neurotic OR rude and disrespectful" or "a little neurotic OR respectful and considerate." I think the latter (the decision you made to apologize) was your best bet. Relax.

Well that's certainly a false dichotomy, because it excludes the choice that she didn't notice or mind at all (didn't notice, not neurotic; didn't notice, neurotic; noticed, rude; noticed, not rude). Your general point is well received though

Well taken!

Haha, now you have made me nervous about the letters I have sent...

But like NoDak said, your evaluation was probably already turned in. The doctor interviewing me told me he was going to write my evaluation right after I left.

You'll be fine. Now your future letters will be perfect!

Pffft. I just accidentally did this at an interview, except much worse... Not only did I completely forget a "Dr.", "Sir", etc, but I also used his first name to address him! Needless to say, my hopes aren't high for that particular school.

I once had an applicant refer to me by just my last name, no title, no nothing! Like we were frat brothers.

I really appreciate everyone's replies! Thanks 🙂

This was only my first interview so hopefully I will get more experience, and make no mistakes in the future.
