Usf ims 2014-2015

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
This application was a last-minute hail-mary attempt to scrounge up some sort of positive end to an otherwise horrible application cycle--so much so that I didn't even bother posting here until today because I didn't believe I'd get into even the SMPs that I applied to--but I've been accepted. Before today, I was only counting on my UG school's post-bacc program.

3.2/28/OOS/URM. Depending on a response from one last DO school, I will probably be heading here this summer. Very sorry for those who did not get the response they wanted. I've been there reeling from all of my rejections, all cycle-long and this is the first sign of hope for me and my medical school prospects. Please don't give up on becoming a physician.

3.0/28R I'm taking my mcat again on 6/13. Although my gpa is only a 3.0 my last 80 units were a 3.7 all upper div sciences. I have strong research and a good shadowing experience in pediatrics. Hope this gives a good insight.

I agree with Launcelot. I got my bs in 2010, worked and cleared my student debts and am finally getting in places.

Anybody know if the waitlist moves much?

Don't they only accept like 10 students?
15 students. Idk how many people were waitlisted, so far I see 3 waitlisted and 3 accepted. Then again, I am sure there are students who do not like posting in forums.

Yeah. I have a 3.8/27 with good ECs but I applied late and am not a URM. Congrats to you 🙂.

Yeppppp! Now comes the ultimate question, since we will still be California residents this summer when we apply through AMCAS. How will USFMCOM evaluate us? Will we still have a tougher time getting in since we are OOS or will they evaluate us separately since we are in the IMS? Also for some personal reasons, I need to maintain my California residency status :-( I'm just going to eat the OOS tuition rates.

Hmmm.. That's tough. If you're going through with IMS, we have to meet with an advisor type person to discuss an individualized applicant plan. I'm sure these types of questions can be answered then.

DENIED! Not even a spot on the waitlist. Very disappointing since I really had my sights set on this program, but congrats to everyone who got in!

my stats for those curious: 3.2/30/IS/URM with good EC's (heavy on clinical experience)

Could you have been overqualified? Your stats look good enough to get into med school directly.

I apologize.. my cGPA is 3.02. This includes an upward trend for my 4th year and post-bac, but I don't believe it's convincing enough. Thanks for the confidence boost though :joyful:

Congrats to everyone accepted!!

I was wait listed with 3.4/22/in state. USF Alumni with good LORs , 4 yrs clinical experience, and an abstract that was accepted for publication in a vascular journal from recent research I did.
Do you know if they keep the waitlist ranked? I am surprised that there are only 3 people accepted in the forum. Everybody posting disappeared.

I don't have a clue. I'm sure they do though. I've sent emails to both this program (about deadlines for being waitlisted) and the MS Pre-Professional program that they deferred our applications to (for deadlines also).

I hope we figure it out sooner than later.

Will you go to MSMS if you get accepted?

I have a good job and a research assistant offer in collaboration with a pharm. company that has a number of chemotherapy drugs in market. MSMS won't be a good enough offer for me. Praying for IMS.

Good luck to everyone who was wait listed and sorry to those rejected. I am sure you will find a way. Where one door closes, another will open. Continue to have faith and believe in your dreams to accomplish your goals. Anyone who was accepted and will be attending USF IMS program, I have created a Facebook page so that we can all get an informal introduction to each other. The link is www.facebook.com/usfims2014

Thanks

So we know the IMS site states 80-100% of people make it to medical school within one year after completing the program. Does anybody, as anecdotal as it may be, have any information regarding how many people successfully matriculate into USF MCOM the year immediately after completing the IMS program? I'm crossing fingers on avoiding a gap year. And yes, I know there is no official linkage.

I got accepted to the MS-MS program about two weeks ago, I havent decided if I will be attending, but is anyone looking for a roommate?
I got accepted as well!! But still hoping on some other places 😀

An I got waitlisted at the IMS... seems there are a lot of people on that wait list 🙁

I am also waiting on some other places, mainly UMDNJ. I can't really make a decision between here and Midwestersn MBS program. Are you going here?

For now I am going here, but I am waiting on Georgetown so... yeah! I don't know anything about Midwestern MBS program so I can't really help you, but I can say I attended the open house for the MSMS at USF and they all seem really nice and the students really liked the program. They said it was 85% similar to M1 and that sometimes they could even study with med students. Some of the professors are the same if I am not mistaken...

Maybe you can make a better decision by researching the programs and how much it will cost you to go the them... If at Midwestern MBS you will have class with the med students I would recommend going to that one, from previous research, it seems that programs in which you study with med students are better then if you don't, however keep in mind you will be graded based on med students grades so if you can't keep up, it could be worse for you!

Good luck on your decision!

Planning to attend the MSMS program. I'm from PA and need roommates/a place to live if anyone is interested.

I was waitlisted as well, has anyone gotten off the IMS waitlist and does anyone know when the last day we will find out if we are off the waitlist or not (I emailed Ms. White and she never responded)? Also for the people who had their app forwarded to the MSMS program from the IMS office, have you heard anything from them?

I was wondering the same thing.

I think I heard someone say 50% at least but I can't be sure...

It varies every year. My class had 4 out of 13 go straight into USF MCOM after IMS, but all 13 did not apply. It really depends on if your MCAT is strong enough (plus good grades from first semester) or if you need to retake your MCAT after completing IMS.

I'm also curious. I was waitlisted and the email said they would forward my app to the msms program but I have not yet heard from anyone.

Someone earlier in this thread mentioned that the MSMS program was not a good program, and I couldn't help but wonder if this individual had any first hand knowledge. I say this because I did, in fact, graduate from the MSMS program, and attending was by far the best decision I ever made. The program doesn't have a linkage to MCOM, doesn't guarantee anything, and doing poorly in it will likely kill your chances of getting an acceptance anywhere, but for me it was the best preparation for medical school that I could have possibly gotten. If anyone has any questions, I'd be happy to answer them!

has there been any updated regarding the wait-list? anybody know anything

Still no response from Ms. White so I sent the email again about an hour ago. She's usually really good at emailing back but now that the app process is done she's not that responsive...this stinks since they emphasize communication via email. 🙁

Hey I didn't even realize you guys were trying to reach Ms. White, but on a recent email to already accepted students it said no don't contact her about the ims program. It stated she is working on something else. You should try emailing Shirley Smith, she's the one running everything as of now.

Thanks! I wish they would have told is that lol 🙂

Hello everyone. I'm currently studying for my MCAT and want to take it in August, only problem is I didn't know if I was going to be ready for it by them so I haven't registered yet. In order to take in in August I would have to drive at least 2 hours away and I'm not sure if there are any afternoon spots available. I want to be in the best shape when I take my MCAT (not tired, etc). I also want to apply for the IMS for next year (app opening in September).
My choices are:
Suck it up and Drive 2+ hours away, possibly in the very early morning (or pay for a hotel room overnight)
Take it in early September and not have that part of my application finished until October.

I guess what I'm really wondering is if it would hurt my application if I didn't get it finished in the first month.

Thanks!

When I applied it was not rolling admissions so it really didn't matter when you submitted your application, as long as you got it in by the deadline (in the spring). Therefore, it shouldn't matter if you take an August or September MCAT. Take it when you are prepared to do your very best. Double check with the IMS website when the application opens to make sure it hasn't changed.

Also, I did a total of 18 hours of commuting for my MCAT, so I think 2 is awesome! I feel that driving a distance is worth it to get the date and time you want. If you need a hotel to be rested and fully prepared, get a hotel. It's a small investment for your success in the long run.

Took mine in January and was fine. It's not rolling admissions so you can wait until the very last day if you want to submit and you'll be fine. In fact, if you're still taking class I would suggest waiting so that you can submit your fall grades as well.

I completed the IMS program and was just admitted to USF MCOM. Good luck to everyone applying! It's an amazing program!

Do you mind sharing your stats/extracurriculars/what you think is necessary for entrance to the program

The admissions process is now completely different from the process that I went through entering IMS in 2012. Now IMS applicants are interviewed through the MCOM admissions (we didn't have interviews my year) and now there are minimum requirements to maintain for guaranteed admission into the medical school class (we did not have any guarantees). So with all the changes, I'm not sure if my stats are super helpful anymore. I do know that everyone in my class had extensive clinical experience (medical assistants, EMTs, clinic managers, surgical techs, etc.) and we all had stats that were not that great. I had a poor MCAT when I applied to IMS, but after completing the program I retook it and my score went up 8 points.
