Is anyone out there currently interviewing for the USF IMS program? Any feedback would be appreciated.

I applied to this program but have not heard back yet for an interview. They sent me an email saying they will let people know whether or not they are accepted by April 15th.

I received the same email. I wonder if they have done any interviews yet. Do you know the reason why it was pushed back?

No, I have no idea. I guess they just need more time to sort out acceptances from rejections (crossing fingers🙂).

I applied here too and I was thinking the same thing (about the interviews). If anyone hears anything please post.

Have you checked out the other masters programs or are you just focused on getting into the IMS program?

When last week went by I figured that I was SOL for the IMS program. I am glad to hear that you guys have not heard of any interviews performed yet.

Good luck to both of you!

Gator or Knight,

Did you hear anything today?

still have not heard anything, I did apply to one of their other master's program just in case I did not get into the IMS.

hey guys, if there are any current IMS students around here you might want to check this with them, but there's a rumor going around USF that the curriculum has changed in the program making things much more difficult and a lot of the students are struggling. The problem is that a couple of the students are doing well, so overall everyone won't be judged any differently which might equal fewer kids getting in. Take it with a grain of salt b/c it's just what some people around here are saying, but it might be worth some deeper investigation...

I haven't heard anything either. I wonder if the budget cuts have affected the program at all.

I spoke with the dept. today. They are handing over their recommendations to the admissions committee soon. They have not conducted any interviews as of yet. Hopefully, we will hear something next week.

I hope we find something out this coming week...I am so anxious to know what is going on. I havent heard anything since they sent that email saying we would know by the 15th...thats very soon!

I heard that the reason everything got pushed back is because they are revamping the interviewing process. Hopefully we will all be classmates this summer!

mdancer,

Thanks for posting on here. You don't hear much about this program on the network. If you hear anything this week, would you please post it? Good luck with everything.

ok if I hear anything I will be sure to post it...hopefully good news will come for all of us.

For the master's programs I got an email stating they would evaluate the applications on the 15th (for those who submitted their completed secondary packets by today) and send notification by mail within 7-10 days. This may be different from the IMS, but I thought I would post for those applying to the other programs.

:fingers crossed:

Thanks for the info. Do you know if the other programs are first come first serve? The deadline for the other programs is in June. Do you know how many students they admit and if it normally fills up before June?

Hey yall,

I applied to this program too (IMS). I have recently had really bad feelings though of not getting in. I got the same email yall did. I really wanna apply to the anatomy program too but I don't know if it's allowed. My understanding though when I called the advising office is that the IMS is a different program with a different office and is separate from that of the other masters.

So im thinking I will apply, hopefully within this week so i might be considered during the 15th?

Any new news???? And how many of yall are applying to this so that you can get into Med after, specifically USF med?

Ya...everyday that they dont send me something I get more and more worried....yes, I want to go to USF med school after this program. (Hopefully I get in this program first...fingers crossed). This program is very different from the other masters programs. It is supposedly much more difficult and equivalent to the work you will do in your first year of medical school. Goodluck to everyone! Post if you here anything!

I have heard through the grapevine that they have automatically offered the other programs to *select* IMS applicants that are not accepted. Guju, is there any validity to this?

LovemyRam- It is too late to be reviewed on the 15th this month because you didn't get your secondary packet in by the 1st, but if you get it in before the end of this month, you will be reviewed on May 15th.

It is definitely first come first serve...pretty much the same as the rolling admissions for the MD program. Still, a crappy early application would probably not trump an excellent application that runs across their desk in June...that is why there is such a thing as a "waitlist". 😉

I think it is around 70-75 students for the molecular medicine master's and MUCH less for Anatomy (like 15-20?). I'm not sure about the other programs. GujuDoc is currently in the Molecular medicine program if you want to shoot her a PM, she is very helpful and would probably turn around a response for you within a day or so.

Thanks for the update.

I just recieved an email from the IMS program stating that they will not be conducting interviews this year.

I view this in two different ways. It may mean that the admissions committee is going to go directly off of the recommendation of the Office of Student Diverstity and Enrichment. On the contrary, it may mean that the committee is going to judge applicants solely based on their application. I believe that puts many of us who have lower scores at a big disadvantage and doesn't give us much of a chance to convey our true reasons for applying to this program.

I guess we will hear the final decision by April 15th. Good luck to all!

Did they say they would contact you by phone, email or snail mail only? Since the IMS program has increased its applicant pool, it has become more competitive. From what I have observered on this thread it seems a decent MCAT score paired with a lower GPA is much more likely to get accepted than a very low MCAT (I'm talking cut-off) and a good GPA. This is why I didn't apply to the IMS. My MCAT is awful, well at least the VR portion. Now I am trying to figure out if I should study now to retake in August or if I should wait until after the first semester of this program, if accepted. It seems like most of the master's students have a year off between completion of the MM program and an acceptance to an MD program. I am not happy about this, but maybe if I rock the MCAT this August and I can report a 4.0 for the first semester of the MM program (granted acceptance), I may make history.

However, it looks like Benb2099 did the IMS and got accepted into USF med directly after completion. Of course that is the IMS, and not the molecular medicine master's AND it appears he had a good MCAT going in.

Thanks for the update.

I know they originally said that we would be notified via email. I am in the same boat that you are with regards to the MCAT.

I am worried about doing the MMS and then not getting the MCAT score needed to get in to the med school. Also, I feel like I am getting older and older while my future of getting into school is getting more and more slim. I am afraid to go into the MMS because of the low shot of getting into med school.

DITTO! I will be 24 going into the MM program, if accepted. If I have to wait another year to get into the MD program, I would be 26! That means 30 when I grad med school, and who knows how old when I get out of residency. As a woman, kids would have to fit in there somewhere, but I just don't know how. lol. I'm trying not to think about this too much because I really wouldn't be happy doing anything else.

Anyone heard anything yet? Last I heard they only have 15 total spots for the class. Does anyone know if they have expanded the class?

No, they did not expand the program. 15 is all they will take. I hope we hear something this week.

I hope we hear something this week.

Yea me too, this is nerve-racking. I wonder how many people applied to this program...hopefully only 15 so we can all get in

You are a funny guy GatorsDoc. I really hope everyone has a back-up plan.

For those of you that will need to retake the MCAT before applying to the MD program, when do you plan to take it again? I'm trying to figure out if I should start studying now and take in August before all the master's and post-bacc programs start, or if I should hold off and get some more classes under my belt and take it in January. Of course, this does make a difference for when I can apply to the MD program...for 2009 matriculation or 2010.

Yea i hope so too. USF is my first choice, thats why i'm so nervous about it. I'm also applying to about 10 other master's programs.

I plan on taking it in August, which gives me the whole summer to study for it. I hope thats enough time.

That should be enough time. Are you currently in school or working a FT job? Does that mean you are going to apply for 2009 matriculation? I am sitting on the fence with this one.

Does anyone know how many people applied to the program this year? I am a 3.0 gpa and 29 MCAT...think i have a shot? And yes, i hate this wait!!

I'm in school, and i think i'm actually going for 2010 matriculation, with a year off after the master's program.

Sounds like you have a shot. Things they would consider: Did you have an upward trend on your GPA? What is your cum. and science GPA? What was your MCAT break down?

well, i am 26 and graduated 5 years ago so it has been awhile. i've had a good paying job since, but would really like to pursue a medical degree. if the gpa was upward or not, would it matter?...it's been soo long. i went to the informational meeting and my MCAT score just makes the cutoff from being outdated🙂 anyway, hope we all get in. it's a shame we don't have interviews...not very professional on how they handled the admissions process. oh well.

I think you have a good shot. Like I said earlier, it seems as though it is more common to get in with a good MCAT score and lower GPA, than vice versa.

I had heard about 3-4 weeks before the end of the application cycle that there were about 70 applicants. So I am assuming that there were quite a few more that applied late. If I had to guess, I would say that there were 100-120 applicants, just a guess though.

I think you have a great shot at getting in. It sounds like you would have to take the MCAT again before being accepted to the med school.

I don't think that I have much of a chance at getting in the IMS program considering I have an average GPA and low MCAT. I have good EC's and lots of professional experience, but I don't think that it will help. I can only hope at this point.

Actually, there is someone on here that did the molecular master's program and got into the MD program the following year with a 29.

Keep your chin up, ya never know. At least you are smart enough to have a back-up plan!

I meant that he/she would have to take it again due to the time lapse.

Thanks for the advice. I hope everything works out well for you.

They're only taking 15??????? Man I thought like the MMS they were gonna take like 70. Dang,

Oh well, Guess i'll have to sit this one out....

Does the MMS or anatomy program not look as good as IMS for medical school??? I dont understand, how does it work?

when i went to the informational meeting, they told me only 13 full electronic applications were sent so far. although a few months ago, they said applicant #s are down from last year.

I hope that is the case, but I heard otherwise. I would give up a lot to be in this program. This past week has been extrememly nerve racking.

When was that meeting?
