Does anyone have experience or a review of this school? I received an e-mail from them and decided to check it out because I love the location, but I'm a little apprehensive. For one, I don't really trust any medical school that has to send out e-mails to attract students. And secondly, the website just seemed a little suspect. It sort of seemed like one of those schools you hear about that just try to bring in a lot of students for money. Any feedback would be very much appreciated. Thank you.

It’s a decent school - name brand, long track record, and a large alumni network. Most residencies are familiar with USF grads, and they have no trouble matching most fields.

That said when I interviewed there I thought the faculties were pretty crappy. I also found my faculty interviewers to be pretty rude and disinterested. I had one guy grill me on some esoteric virology stuff, and the other interviewer told me “you should be greatful were even considering you given your scores”. (No one wants to go to a school that takes that opinion of their students)

They also have to take some of their M1 classes with PT and PA students which is really weird. I remember students saying it sucked because there wasn’t enough room for everyone in the lecture hall, so some students needed to sit in another room and watch the lecture on video.

I interviewed last cycle but was ultimately waitlisted, along with everyone else who interviewed December or later. I got the vibe that the school was only focused on recruiting high stat applicants and that everything else was an afterthought. I don't like the idea of being a student who's going to essentially serve as a pawn for the school to climb up in reputation and artificially improve its image (the new dean wants to move USF into the top 20 or whatever). I also thought the faculty, staff, and admissions representatives I met on interview day weren't very genuine with regards to the messages they were conveying and I got a strong impression that they were all putting on a facade. It also doesn't help their case that they sternly denied that candidates weren't interviewing for the waitlist after December when asked about it on interview day (a blatant lie). Another thing that seemed to stand out to me was the fact that pretty much every reported acceptance off of the waitlist at the end of the season was URM candidates. This gave me the impression that they were just trying to fill their class with as many high MCATs as possible and then fulfill the quota for URM candidates, something that doesn't sit well with me.

Aside from the negatives, overall, it's a decent school with good research and clinical opportunities, but questionable value system and community. If it's your only acceptance, go there of course. But if you have other options, I would recommend you consider them.

Yea, this mirrors my interview experience at USF as well.

What does this mean?

For the past several years, everyone who interviews at USF December or later has reported getting waitlisted on SDN. Someone brought this up during my interview at the Q&A and they basically said that wasn’t true. Check out past USF threads to see what I’m talking about.

I'm applying. I got advertisements from Vanderbilt and Washington School of Medicine. So, I don't think that fact alone should put you off.

I got accepted to USF SELECT in February (not URM) but this was several years ago before the culture shifted a bit and they started their stat hunting campaign. Several more of my classmates were accepted the same day.

I received the same email but my MCAT is well below their median.
