Hey,
I am also interested in this program, congrats on your acceptance! I applied but have not been accepted yet. As far as the MCAT goes I know they offer an MCAT course (Kaplan I think) so if you would be interested in taking that I'd say wait. Otherwise, I would say go ahead and take it now because in order to apply for the 2013 cycle you would need to have taken your MCAT before the end of summer which means you would have to be studying for the MCAT while you are still in the USMS program at USF. If you don't mind me asking what's you GPA/MCAT?

Thanks

Hi!

I received an e-mail from Katie today saying the graduate admissions recommended me for acceptance into USF MSMS but the admissions committee still has to decide on offering me a spot into the class or not but at the same time, a congratulations on my acceptance. (is this what you received, natcc???)

I haven't accepted the offer yet - I'm going to wait for the official acceptance letter to arrive via snail mail.

what do you like most about the program compared to other post bac programs?

Hey,
I sort of have the opposite problem, my MCAT is 27 (not fantastic but hopefully won't pull me under) bit my GPA is only a 3.1. I was working too much while I was in school and hadn't learned how to prioritize school over work and it really but me in the a** my first two years. Oh well hopefully I can make up for it and do really well in the MSMS program at USF.

As far as the IMS vs MSMS I haven't had a chance to do too much research. From the little that I have read it seems like the IMS is more difficult to get into but I don't know much else other than that. I emailed Katie on Thrusday (I'm sure she thinks I am the most annoying person in the universe) to see if there were any updates on my application status but I haven't heard back yet. That's awesome to hear that you know other people in the program who have gone on to be succesful in the medical field.

You said that your cousin entered the year following the SMP, does that mean they took a year off in between? Because I was thinking that if I started applying for medical school for the 2013 entering class (right after finishing at USF) I would have to submit my applications this year and I wouldn't have much to add from my application this year. I (hopefully) would be in the masters program at USF but I wouldn't have any grades or anything to show that I was improving. So it seems like they would just say good job on getting into the masters program, contact us next year when you can show that you did well, you know what I mean? Anyway I would love to hear how your cousins went about it and I am definitely going to do a little more research on the differences between the MSMS and IMS.

Oh and thanks for starting this thread, I've been looking for one for a couple weeks now 🙂

Hey just did some quick research through last years forum http://forums.studentdoctor.net/showthread.php?t=800464 link if you're itnerested, but this is what I found regarding the IMS vs MSMS;
IMS = ~15 students, all first year medical student basic science curriculum and anatomy lab graded against medical student average, taking same tests.

Pre-professional = larger group of students. traditional delivery of courses (the medical school teaches in system blocks rather than broken down courses) and I think there's a MCAT prep option.

Hope this helps a little bit 🙂

Hey, congratulations!! That's what I got too, but it's essentially an offer since you can already accept/reject it. Essentially, what happens, from what I understand, is that the med school accepted you after considering your application, and they then recommended you to the grad school- ie they told the grad school they found a student for a spot in their MSMS program.

I had a pretty low MCAT score, and have not retaken it- I will probably take it again in June. The low MCAT score limited my options for SMP programs- there's no way I could get into one of the more reknown SMP programs (like Georgetown, Tufts ...). However, I hadn't even looked/heard about those SMP's before considering the USF one. I'm a Florida resident, with family in the Sarasota area, and am very keen on returning to Florida after my current undegrad degree. My cousin also has two of his friends who did the USF MSMS and one of them is now in his 3d year of medicine at USF and the other at FAU (they entered the year following the SMP); so that definitely motivated me to apply to the program too!

Did you look into any other programs/are waiting for other answers? what have you heard about the program? Are you a Fl resident?

M.

I didn't want to get too excited because the e-mail stated something about not meeting minimum requirements and I am short 80 points on the old scoring system of the GRE as a minimum requirement. Hope they will see past that but regardless, I am retaking the GRE in about a week and a half.

I had a low MCAT score as well and therefore, opted not to disclose that information to USF and instead, use my GRE score. The low MCAT score also limited my options for applying to SMP programs which made me want to hit myself over the head for not doing well enough on them to be considered a strong applicant to those programs.

I looked through last year's thread for input about this program...from my understanding, they changed the program???

I'm looking into 3 other programs. They're all waiting for my GRE score to even consider reviewing my application as well as 1 LOR.

I am not a FL resident. I'm a NJ resident. Hoping the graduate admissions committee looks past the 80 points I'm short of on the GRE for meeting the minimum requirements and tell me I'm officially accepted because I've been trying to find a reason to move to either FL or California and now, USF has given me a reason to!

Are you going to stay on campus or find an apartment around campus?

Hey got applied and accepted. I still have not decided where I will be going because I am still waiting to hear back from a few different programs.

I just wanted to chime in and say that from looking at the course schedule I found on their site, there are summer classes your last summer. Between taking class and filling out your AMCAS and secondaries, I dont think planning the MCAT during this time would lead to a great score. I personally plan to retake the MCAT the summer before I start the SMP. I can submit my application the following summer with an increased MCAT (25Q first time) and then SMP grades to show the improved GPA. Take it for what its worth, but thats my plan. Hope it helps.

Good luck to you guys still waiting to be accepted.

Hey- well I think you should be fine, in all honesty! Glad to hear you're thinking of moving South- it's really good weather around Tampa! I am not too sure about housing yet, but I'm definitely interested in finding a roommate or two before heading down to Tampa. Did you apply to more programs in Fl and Calif; or did you also try some more renown programs?

Do you know in which ways the program has changed? /where did you hear that? Is it a good/bad thing?

I was also wondering if you guys had sought out MPH programs too? Some people have said that grades were hyperinflated and that it was difficult to use an MPH to improve grades. But from what I hear, the ACGME will mandate a public health component into residency programs pretty soon, lots of people say that they are interested in public health but have nothing to show for it, and an MPH seems to round out an application making the applicant stand out -- I wonder to what extent the MPH can help an applicant with like 3.3 gpa 'make up' for his grades.

I heard the change in last year's forum which rja posted the link to - if you read through all the posts, it says the program has changed in that the MSMS is separate from IMS now. Then at the end of all the posts, there was one poster that is part of this program currently that hates it with a passion so I'm not sure what to do about this negative review - if i should take it lightly or consider it when making choices.

I personally don't like MPH programs because I feel like everyone is getting that degree just to say they have a masters degree and therefore, have opted out of applying to those programs.

If I decide to accept the offer here, I'm debating on staying in the graduate housing on campus or renting an apartment with others. Have you heard anything about the graduate housing?

congrats on your acceptance!

are you going to utilize their MCAT prep course that runs from May - July?

No. I took the Kaplan course before and was not a fan of some of their strategies. I started scoring better when I changed some of the strategies but that was too late. I am going to utilize the SDN study plan posted in the MCAT section.

Hey congrats on the acceptance ! Where are your other pending applications?
I think that's pretty valuable advice; regardless of when I decide to apply (this year or next), the only real time I could have would be this summer. I was on Kaplan MCAT course too; do you really think it'll make a difference to take SN2ed's guide with his recommended books?? (or are you keeping the Kaplan books but adopting his study guide?)

Thanks. I have received exam krackers set and the princeton review hyper learning set from a friend. I plan to have my own modified study plan with those materials. I did not like the Kaplan course. The reason I am not reusing Kaplan books is because I have already seen all of the material and questions. I do not want to reuse old materials and I want to approach verbal completely differently. I did not like kaplans mapping strategy. I want to see all new questions. I think using new material will be the best way to see where my weaknesses currently are. Then I can adjust my study and fix them. As far as other applications Im waiting to hear from Temple ACMS program.

Yea I started reading the forum from last year-- I also saw the post at the end; I wonder to what extent his voice represents that of the rest of the 200 students...

I PM'd some members that are in the program currently based on last year's thread and they also have many cons than pros to the program. I am a bit sad now as I was extremely excited to move to the sunshine state as these inputs have somewhat changed my opinion of going to USF.

That's really disappointing to hear that some people didn't like the program, did they say any specific reasons why?

Lack of student-professor relationships on top of not being able to have office hours with the professors (instead, the professors expect you to ask questions during the Fridays Q&A sessions) (no open door policy)

HOWEVER,
1 person I PM'd stated they have been able to build a relationship with a few professors to ask them for LORs and that they have seen the graduate students in this program study more than the medical students (not sure if this is a pro or a con)

HOWEVER again...
another person who took the program the previous year stated that the professors treat you unfairly and seem to not care about you at all and strongly opposed me from going there because this program is simply a money maker for USF. strongly opposed and told me to seek reputable programs in the north.

another student stated that the lectures are taught each time by different professors so one will contradict the other in what is important and what is not. professors will say not to worry about a topic for the exam but on the exam, those topics will show up because these professors don't write the exams

this same person has stated that the people at the head of the program don't know anything - you can ask one of them a question, receive a response, turn around and ask a different head and receive a totally different response....

not sure if all these bad remarks are because the program is fairly new and the kinks need to still be worked out but...you tell me what you think now of the program...

I can see that really being a problem, I was counting on some LOR from the professors for med school applications as I'm sure most people are. I will probably still go to USF if I get in though because there aren't many other options in Florida and I want to stay close to my family. With this new info what other programs are you considering?

I don't know if you were talking to acoustic but I'm still considering USF, albeit cautiously. I'm also wondering if I should apply to LECOM postbacc - it has a linkage into LECOM afterwards, and I'm thinking they give preference to Florida residents for the LECOM Bradenton campus. Other options would be to work for a year in some medically related thing; or consider the MPH option more.

I did not speak to acoustic. I spoke to others. What did acoustic have to say about the program that you are still considering USF cautiously? You can PM it to me to protect their privacy.

Hey guys just got accepted, not sure if im going yet like everyone else. Ive talked with a few current med students who have heard of the program either from friends in it or who have completed it and none of them had any real negative views on it, they all recommended it and said it would be a great way to prepare for med school courses. It seems like a good option to strengthen an application and somewhat stand out a little more then just having a B.S. I personally think the only negative to the program is the amount of students in it from what I have heard/read about 200 which greatly reduces the interactions and relationships we can have with the professors. But then again in undergrad theres thousands. Its hard to find much reviews aboutt his program but it has only been growing in popularity since it started which can only be a good thing. Plus this program beats continuing to take science undergrad courses with 18 yr olds to simply add more science course work. At least well have a M.S.

Do your friends know the percentage of students that are accepted into med school after completing the program?

Can you elaborate on the PROS since we've only heard of the cons so far?

The program's FAQ says about 80% I believe but I think that is old news..?

From talking to Katie I found out that out of the 200 students appx in the program (which by the way is like 60 more than the med class size at USF), appx half apply to Med before starting the program; and of those, 20 were accepted in medicine right after the program for last years class. However, for lots of people taking the program this is a 2 year process which involves increasing your grades in the 1st year, and then applying, and using the 2nd year to relax from the intensity of the course (work for a year...) before entry into medicine.

Although it wasn't clear that there was an official success rates, it seems like most of those that get in do so the year after the program is over- although there is no guarantee of acceptance into medicine, there is a guarantee that the 1st year of med will be easier for someone who took the program compared to someone jumping into it without previous exposure to the course contents.
Yeah natcc it seems like most people would have to wait an additional year after finishing in order to start medical school because if you were to fill out the application now you wouldn't have much to add from your previous app. Also I don't know about anyone else but I wouldn't have any professors to get LOR from since I graduated 2 years ago I have lost touch with most of my professors from undergrad.
I still have not heard back from Katie regarding my status. I know there is still plenty of time left but seeing everyone post on here about how they have been accepted I am starting to get a little nervous.

Honestly, give her a call! She's really a nice person, and she'll be honest with you I'm sure. It may be that they're waiting for more apps, or that they forgot to send you your notification.
I thought about doing that but I don't want her to get aggrivated with me. I'll probably wait another week or so and see if I hear anything. Thanks!

Wow you are so right she is super nice, turns out they havent received my transcript yet for some reason. She said to just email her a copy of my unofficial transcript for now so hopefully that was the only thing holding me up 🙂

Hey guys I've been reading along this thread trying to gather some info regarding USF's IMS and MSMS program. I know the dead line for IMS already passed however there are some other concentrations USF offers:

1. aging and neuroscience*
2. anatomy*
3. molecular medicine*
4. women's health
5. health science

*apparently these are only for students who are looking to so research and PhD programs

I'm interested in going to medical school so I suppose I would have to choose between 4 and 5? I was just wondering what you guys picked when you were applying, and which one is best for med school?

Also does anyone know how successful the MSMS program is and how do these concentrations compare to the IMS concentration? Did you guys consider any other programs? I have a 3.36 GPA overall and I got a 29-O on my MCAT...I'm not really sure what program would be best for me so any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

I looked at the current students profiles and saw a majority didn't have a concentration, that's what I did too I didn't pick a concentration since that's what most people who want to professional school right after did

Hahaha yea definitely. I'm still leaning on potentially going-- if I chose a postbac next year this is where I'll go. What about you?

My mom just job transferred to tampa...and although leading up to her moving we were constantly arguing and i wanted to run far away and live out on my own, since she moved, i realize i'd rather be close to her and not move far away and live on my own until i get used to that idea of not having her by my side constantly (commuted for undergrad so i never got that college experience like normal people do)

So since then, i've been leaning strongly towards attending USF, especially after those 2 last good reviews I read in the last year's thread. as soon as I get my official acceptance, I'm going to give Katie a call and ask to schedule shadowing of students.

What are you planning on doing for the glide year if you decide to attend USF?

From my research on the IMS program vs the MSMS program, the only difference I saw is that in the IMS program, you take classes alongside M1 medical students while in the MSMS program, you don't take classes alongside M1 medical students however, you get taught by the same professors and same depth/detail as the medical students (so the content for MSMS and M1 would be the same...you just don't get graded against the medical students)

Are you looking into linkage programs (programs that allow you to apply to their medical school while finishing the post-bac program they offer) - if so, based on average MCAT scores from last year through researching, I found that most of these programs accept students with MCAT > 31. Not sure if that 29 will hurt you or not when applying to these linkage programs.

If you're not looking into linkage programs, are you ready to take on the glide year?

I haven't had my morning coffee yet so forgive me if something doesn't make sense on this and for not answering all of your questions!

Yea that makes sense man! Would you be living with your mom in Tampa then?

As for a glide year I would love to say travel, take an MPH (because I have a big interest in public health) etc...but I wouldn't have the money to do so. I would however love to get training as an EMT and then work for a year as an EMT; or maybe work as a nurse auxiliary or ER tech or something like that. At the same time I would probably be doing some volunteering. I would also love to go work in a developing country for a year on a health or developmental project, but if I ever did get an interview offer being far away would be a huge disadvantage.
I'm not really sure what people do for their glide years but I feel a lot do similar things to what I listed. Did you have any ideas?

Nah - I already told my mom that I'm gonna live on campus in the graduate housing or find a roommate and live close to campus. It's just nice that she wouldn't be so far away from campus if something did happen or if I just missed her terribly and wanted to surprise visit her 🙂

I haven't really thought about what I'd do. I know I'd have to find some type of employment 'cause of all these loans I'm racking up but besides finding a job, I wanna volunteer. I thought about doing the EMT thing but I don't know how fun it would be because without being a Paramedic you really can't do anything to the patient...so that kind of deterred me from that thought. I also wanted to do the go to a developing country thing also but I haven't looked into any details about that.

I'm part of AMSA and in their latest issue of their magazine, it said something about physicians with knowledge of MPH issues are better equipped than those that don't go through any courses related to MPH....so that might be a good idea, if that is what you've been looking at also for the gap year. 🙂

Has anyone from fsu or tallahassee been admitted to the program yet might be looking for a roomate if I end up going.

any other pros that people can list (not cons)??

I am an FSU grad and I got my acceptance a couple weeks ago. Only downside is that I am also waiting to hear back from LECOM after I interviewed with them in mid April so I am not 100% committed to USF yet. I would be happy to make some tentative roomate plans, but I wouldn't want to mess anyone up if I end up at LECOM. Let me know 🙂

I'm sure you will be ok, and if you really want this then let them know you want it, they will find a way to squeeze you in. Keep me posted, right now I am looking at places near campus in the $500/month range. Go Noles!

Hey, anyone know when we are supposed to sign up for classes?

Katie is supposed to e-mail us with the CRN numbers. Last time I e-mailed her about signing up for classes was 2 weeks ago when the semester just ended and grades had to be reported so she said she was preoccupied with doing grades at the moment. I don't wanna e-mail her again about it...maybe you should =p

Done 🙂 I shall inform you of her response 😛

"Orientation: The Graduate School will have a general orientation and they will send you information about this with a day/time. This is optional and you are not required to attend. The Graduate School's orientation will only go over general information about the university, but it will NOT cover program or college information.

The Morsani College of Medicine (MCOM) will be having a Graduate Orientation for students enrolled in the MS in Medical Sciences (pre-professional program) on Wednesday, August 22nd in the MCOM Auditorium. Orientation will be a half-day event. We will send you more details in the next month. "

Hi everyone, I'm attending the USF MSMS program this upcoming year as well. I have the course list from Katie but am still waiting on my health records to be verified so I can sign up. A few things I wanted to mention:

1) Classes are 2-5 mon-thurs with the Q&A on friday. That leaves a lot of downtime. What are some good (preferably paying) things to do to build our resume?

2) I need an apt. and roommate if anyone's interested.

3) I would take those negative reviews from the other thread with a grain of salt. Those people seemed pretty bitter, as if they were owed something. The good reviews seemed more well-written and legitimate imo.

there's a few students still looking for roommates on the facebook page.

Just got a call today that I was accepted into med school, I hope one of you guys gets my spot at USF 🙂 Good luck to everyone in the future!

So I need everyone's help. I am now stuck with a lease at Malibu apartments that I need to get out of so I can find a place closer to LECOM. If anyone is looking for a place or knows someone who is please let me know. It will save you the $250 security deposit! Ok thanks for your help.

I am in this program right now and finishing in just a few more weeks. If anyone has any questions, please feel free to ask.

hey so this is just a general question I wanted throw out there and see where everyone else is at... has anyone already taken their mcat and sent out their application for med school fall of 2013?

Hey guys,

I wanted to introduce myself. I recently finished the MSMS program in August and while it was a whirlwind year, I definitely gained from it and had an awesome learning experience. Lazzlow has made some great points here (If you refer to my other post on the 2011-2012 USF MSMS thread I addressed some issues that occurred and these were resolved). I would like to address some of the things he/she has mentioned:

1) There is a lot of downtime it seems, however, you should be dedicated to this program 110%. Class times are only from 2-5pm four days a week, yet, I guarantee you will have to study at least 6 days a week. I personally worked on the weekends in an emergency department in Zephyrhills as an ED scribe (ScribeAmerica.com or Medical Scribe Alliance.) There are several opportunities for leadership (Association of Medical Sciences Graduate Students), shadowing, research, and volunteering once you get here and get settled. But get settled first!! The first month and first tests come at you fast. Also, in regards to studying, there will be tutoring opportunities (I will be one of two of your TA's for Biochem and Genetics!!! I look forward to meeting some of you!)

2) No comment. But check out The Hamptoms, Tampa Palms, Boardwalk, The Pointe at South Florida, to give a few suggestions

3)Negative reviews: Dead on. Take them for 1/10th of a grain of salt. You get just as much out of this program as you put into it. There were a lot of issues with the program because of it being novel, yet, they have been addressed and this year is going to be a great experience for you all. Everything great must start somewhere, as future physicians, dentists, PAs, etc. take yourself for example... you must start somewhere.

With all that said, again, I look forward to meeting you all and hope you have a wonderful experience this year.

Sincerely,

Garrett Harrison, M.S.

Is the program geared more for Fl residents? Or do they take in a good amount of non-residents?

Is the program geared more for Fl residents? Or do they take in a good amount of non-residents?

they accept a lot of out of state residents. i'm currently in the program and I have met people from Wisconsin, New Jersey, Texas, New York, Massachusetts, Georgia...etc. However, more than half of the students did their undergrad at USF (and a few did their undergrad at other Florida undergraduate institutions) but don't let this deter you from applying!

despite all the negative reviews I've read about this program, I decided to make my own opinion of the program and I'm glad I decided to attend USF! I talked to a few alumni of this program from last year who are in USF medical school this year as MS1's and they said it's prepared them a lot for medical school and they are far more better off with adjusting to the rigors of medical school because of this program.

Thanks for posting, glad to hear it can be done! The hours sound perfect. I am currently applying, just waiting to take my GRE in a few days :scared: but I am planning on the scribe experience on the weekends, sounds like you really made the most of this opportunity!

I'm glad to have found this forum!

:xf: hoping for acceptances!
