I'm just wondering how many people are waitlisted at USF and does anyone know their rank on the waitlist. I heard the list is 120 in length, but I'm not sure. I was told I have a "good" number, but I didn't ask what number. Did anyone ask what number they are on the waitlist?

Mr. Larkin told me I had a "good number" too, but this was back in October or so. I think the number refers not to your place on the wait list, but to some score they give you based on your interviews and overall strength as an applicant.

I got in touch with him a couple of weeks ago about whether or not I was on the wait list (as opposed to on hold) and he said then that they were waiting to find out who had already been accepted and at what schools before they sent out the rest of their acceptances. Does anyone know if the class is full right now? And does that mean they're less likely to accept you if you already hold a spot somewhere?

The class was full back in Jan or Feb, but as students drop their spots others will replace them. I think you can hold more than one spot until May 15th. However do not hold me to that date. So I cannot see a school not accepting somebody before this date if you already are holding a spot somewhere else.

Ugh! How annoying! I'm on 4 hold lists right now, and I have the feeling all of them have filled up their classes already. Why haven't I been put on any waiting lists? Everyone else seems to have been, but I haven't heard a thing, and every time I contact the schools to find out if my status has changed, they all tell me I'll hear something by June. I feel like I'm getting strung along with false hope. 😡

I guess it's better than getting a mailbox full of rejections letters, though. 🙄

and my current status won't even allow me to join the waitlist club for emotional support!

I interviewed on Feb 18. Dr. Ackermann told everyone that morning (before we began interviewing) that the class was already full. He said that we all would be waitlisted. I believe he said that there are 2 waitlists. One is dynamic, so applicants that interview last may move to the front of the list. The other, I guess, is just a regular list. I had never heard of a school that had 2 waitlist before, so I'm not sure if maybe I misunderstood him, but I'm almost positive that I heard him mention 2 waitlist. The funny thing is, that when Mr. Larkin called me, he told me that all the applicants at my interview were either waitlisted or rejected. Another unique thing about USF is that they reject applicants off of their waitlist. I had never heard of a school doing this before either. I was also told by Mr. Larkin that I had a good chance of being accepted, but that he couldn't offer me any guarantees. He said this without me asking what chance I had of being accepted, so I hope that is a good sign. I guess I'll have to wait and see what happens with USF.

Mr. Larkin called me the week after my interview and said I got a good score, so I had a good spot on the wait list. 2 weeks ago, his secretary called me to say that they are done interviewing and I'm still near the top of the list. Before hanging up, she said, "We hope you choose USF" so I feel pretty confident that I will be accepted. Still, I am anxious for an official acceptance, because it will be my first acceptance, and relieve a lot of my stress. I know I shouldn't be worry because they seemed confident that I'd get off the list, but it's always scary that there will be some sort of fluke and the waitlist won't end up moving very much. Good luck everyone, just sharing my experience, don't know if it will help anyone.

i kind of get the feeling that usf just wants to make sure everyone on the waitlist still likes them. they told me the same stuff about having a good number that in past years would mean i'd get in eventually but no guarantees, etc. i also got a valentine's day e-card from them (probably everyone did), and mr. larkin called me a few weeks ago to let me know that although i'm not accepted yet, "usf still loves me". but maybe SDNers are just exceptional applicants who really are at the top of their list! 😀

I loved USF!! However, if I get into UMiami, I will withdraw my acceptance. So, let's make a deal. Convince UMiami to accept me so that we can get the USF waitlist moving for you guys. 🙂 Seriously, though, I will withdraw my acceptance as soon as possible because I know what the waiting can do to you. Wishing you the best of luck in the waiting game.

I haven't got a call from USF after being waitlisted, I hope that's not bad. Hopefully I'll hear from them soon.

magellan-
i don't think it's bad not to get a call. sounds like faerichilde's call was the waitlist call itself, and mine was in response to an email i sent, not just a random "we love you" call.

On the other hand, when they called me the first time, they said they'd call me again when they know more, but they also said that if I think it's been a while and I haven't heard from them, I can call them, so it couldn't hurt to try to give them a call just to see what's up.

I think I'm going to give them a call tomorrow to let them know that I'm still interested in attending their school and to see if there has been any movement on their list.

I called Mr. Larkin today and he said I'm around number 40, which is on the borderline of the normal amount of movement seen on their waitlist. He also said that a letter of intent would not help, since all files now remain closed. So hopefully USF will have more movement than usual this year.

P.S. Cane why do want to go to miami over USF?

Well, I live 15 minutes from Jackson. So, it would be very convient for me to stay because I don't have to move. I want to stay with my family (we are close and tightly knit). Also, I've basically grown up in Jackson (my mom works there). I know it like the back of my hand, and I feel right at home there. I love the atmosphere and the excitement in the air. It is such a consuming place, and it gives me such a rush whenever I'm there. They also got some of the best doctors in the world at Jackson. I would be honored to learn from these demi-gods of the medical profession. I also have many friends who are medical students there, so it would be cool to go to school with them. They could show me the ropes. However, if I don't get into Miami, I'm sure I'll be happy at USF. I was really impressed with everything in that school. They have great clinical facilities, and their match list is strong.

Magellan, how did you get Mr. Larkin to tell you what number you are? I'd love to know what number i am, roughly, cuz i'm so worried right now. i really want to get into a Florida school, and i think USF is my best shot cuz i had good interviews there.

When he called me he said i was on the waitlist, but that i had a good number (same everyone else heard though, apparently). How can i find out what number I am?

and magellan, could you post of PM me your stats so i can see how i measure up to a probable acceptee, please?

On one hand I'm glad to hear I'm not the only one suffering through this wait-list game. On the other hand, I'm a little discouraged by the fact that everyone is getting the same "I hope to see you here, we love you" notes from USF via mail/email or phone. Hrm... I didn't hear this directly from Dr. Ackermann but through my premed advisor who spoke with him. He apparently indicated during the conversation that I'm around number 6 on the waiting list. Does anyone know if its moved? I'm DYING here.

Thanks-Eva

Caveman,

I called and asked if the waitlist has had any movement and he said "let me see how you're doing on the waitlist" he then proceeded to tell me that I was close to the borderline and that in a normal year about 40 people move off the waitlist, so I assumed that I was around 40. He didn't tell me my exact number. However, he has always been honest with me and I don't think he would tell me I'm on the borderline if I was number 60 or 70.

I don't know. . . Larkin told me that I was ALSO right on the border (top 40). He also told me that in any other year I would make it off the waitlist. He couldn't guarantee anything for me, but that it looked pretty good. When I heard this, I was pretty excited, but after reading the USF posts I think this is just satisfy-the-masses rhetoric on their part. That border must be a mile wide. I mean how many people can fit on the cut-off line? Whatever, dude.

here's what mr. larkin emailed me regarding the waitlist:

Leila, you are a very competitive applicant and I remember you well.
You are in a general area that is on the bubble. We normally get
down to a movement of between 50-70 students on the
accepted/wait list and you are right in the middle of that group. We
do have about 35-40 of our accepted students which are multiply
accepted and a large number of the students on the wait list ahead
of you are also accepted at other institutions. That being said, as
you can see there are many who must make many decisions. I
thing you have a reasonable chance to get in here this year, but of
course there are no guarantees. I think I will have a better gauge in
mid-May as to what movement we can expect........let's keep in
touch.

hope this helps!

I swear that man is a saint. He is my favorite person in the world. I hope all of you get in. You guys seem like the nicest people, and it would be great to have a class filled with people like you.
Cane

yeah, a real saint. 🙄 With As in almost all of my science classes and a 3.67 gpa he told me to get a postbac. 🙄

but, I'll admit it's nice that he is so willing to talk with students 🙂

OK, OK. A saint with a pair of little horns. Better?
Cane

Larkin is cool. Don't feel bad Foxy, he told me to consider a postbacc too though. 3.8 GPA, 3.7 SGPA. What the hell is wrong with this state!?!

i love mr. larkin and i love usf!!!
!@&*# UF put me on hold for 7 months and then didn't even want me on their *&%$#@ waitlist. 😡 😡 😡

DOWN WITH UF! 😀

I think USF seems to like post-baccs. That's what I am and they gave me an interview first time around. I loved the school, faculty and students. Everyone was nice. It's my #1 choice and I hope I get pulled off the waitlist soon.
