I apologize if this has already been brought up, but I was curious if being a USFMG counts me out of optho. I know it's a competitive specialty, but I get different answers from different sources about just how competitive it is. Some places I look say it's in the top 3, others say the lower half of the top 10, etc. Basically, I think I'd love optho and would be a good match for it, and I was wondering what the chances of me matching (even into a crappy program if I have to) being a USFMG.

Once again, I apologize if this has been brought up recently.

Very competetive.

Only 30 - 35 FMGs match every year, some of whom were Ophthalmologists in there home country.

Damn that sucks. Oh well, I'll probably change my mind a million times by the time I have to worry about it.

i'd still give it a shot if it's what you really want... i was lucky enough to match with a handful of interviews coming from a caribbean med school... moreover, i'm canadian which meant that programs looked at me like i was a leper of somesort... each program interviews differently and the program i matched at just clicked extremely well with me (translated = talked to the chairman of the program during lunch about the school's college football team for half-an-hour)... whatever it takes, eh? good luck.

Yeah you're probably right. Never know if you don't try. Worst comes to work I can list some back ups. Also, I tend to be very personable during interviews and they usually turn into conversations. When I interviewed for medical school we ended up talking about music for a while.
