For one of my secondaries, I found that I can use the abbreviation of a specific research institute at the school and it fits the word count perfectly. Can I use this without spelling it out, especially if I mention what that department does in my essay? For example, let's say I want to do research on pancreatic cancer at the National Cancer institute, is it okay if I just say, "and staff members at the NCI may help me start a project on pancreatic cancer."

If you're still in college, ask ten random Faculty members if they know what the NCI is. My gut says that you're playing with fire.

Ask 10 random medical school adcom members if they would know what NCI means in the context of pancreatic cancer research and most of them will know.

If you are using the acronym of a center at that medical school, the adcom members might recognize it or might just gloss over it and focus on the expressed interest in cancer research and say, "ok, got it."
