Hey guys,

Sorry if this question was already asked but I just needed some clarity.

Unfortunately I didn't match last year so I will be trying again this year for the 2013 match. I`ve gotten an updated CV with volunteer work, paid job experience etc...

I just wanted to know if I should use last year's LOR`s, MSPE, and transcript?

Obviously they are dated 2011, but for repeat applicants eras gives this option because they retain the electronic copies on file for 1 year and will transfer them to the 2013 eras cycle.

I`ve gotten mixed answers from people, some say to use them because its less hassle to get everything again, others say to get everything new and at least have a current date on them.

I really need some advice regarding this.

Also if I got the LOR's updated with at least a new current date should I do the same for MSPE and transcript?

Thanks!

So...how well did they work out for you last year?

That's what I thought.

There's nothing you can do about the MSPE and the transcript (assuming your updated transcript doesn't have some mindblowing grades on it, like honors in 4 different subIs). But you need at least one (preferably 3 or 4) updated/new LORs. Otherwise, why bother?

I think the answer is "yes", but not for the reasons you think.

If you choose yes, then your MSPE, transcripts, and LOR's are all transferred from last year to this year. If ERAS still works the way it did in the past, you can still ask your LOR writers from last year to update your letters. If they do and send a new copy in (with an updated date, and perhaps some additional information), then the new letter replaces the old letter. This way, you get the best of both worlds. If you can get people to rewrite your letters and upload them in a timely fashion, then they will replace the old letters. If not, the old letters remain. If you get new letters from new people, those can be uploaded also. You can only send 4 letters to any one program, but I believe you can upload as many as you want to pick from.

So:
You want new / updated letters if possible
Keeping your old letters is better than having nothing, or late letters.

You should check with the ERAS people to make sure it would work this way. If I'm wrong, then this would be a bad idea.

Are you sure that you know why you didn't match last year? Do you think there is any risk that one of your letters was negative and that played a role in not getting interviews?

When I was in the situation of reapplying, I reused my old letters but also added a new one for the program director I had spent the year working for. That seemed to work well, but I do think it's ideal if you can get fresh letters.
