Using medical licensing services

Hi,

I am currently a PGY3. I plan on returning to my hometown to practice in another state. I am about to go through the process of applying for my medical license.

I was wondering if any of you have used a licensing service (basically, you pay them to apply for your license for you)? What do they actually do? Is it worth it? Did it save any time at all?

If you just need 1 license, I would do it myself. From 3 up, consider using a service.

They will tell you all the great stories as to what they can do for you (often implying that they have an 'inside way' to make obstacles go away). In reality they make you fill out a long questionaire that includes all the information the licensing boards could ever ask you and transferring the relevant stuff onto the respective applications.
You still have to sign the applications and you are still responsible for the truthfullness of the content.

They can be a help with some of the notoriously difficult licensing boards that require q-day phonecalls during the process. But if you don't have any 'baggage' (disciplinary action by a hospital for example), you can probably save yourself the expense and just fill out the forms yourself.

I find the concept of struggling to get a med license after all med school + residency + USMLE + board certification to be just.... mind boggling and frankly disappointing, and all this is triggered by how the bureaucracy has completely taken control.

I am all for national medical licenses.

I know it varies from state to state (I did mine in Virginia), but I didn't find the process that difficult. Fill out a few forms, send checks to a few places and it was done. I'll bet I spent less than ten hours on it over a couple of weeks.
