I know there are tons of threads about medical books, but my situation is a bit different.

A surgery resident that I currently work with offered to give me his old medical textbooks and review books from when he went to medical school in 2003. However, since I'm moving 2,000 miles away from home, it's going to be a pain hauling these books from home over to where I will be starting school. Do you guys know if any of these books are good to use (even if they are old edition) or are there some books I can leave behind because they're not useful or too old?

Anatomy:

Moore, Dalley - Clinically Oriented Anatomy 4th edition
Chung - BRS Gross Anatomy 4th edition
Fix - BRS Neuroanatomy 3rd edition
Rohen, et al - Color Atlas of Anatomy 5th edition (has pictures of cadaver dissections)
Goldberg - Clinical Anatomy Made Ridiculously Simple 2nd edition

Others:

Constanzo - BRS Physiology 3rd edition
Fix, Dudek - BRS Embryology 2nd edition
Cotran, Kumar, Collins - Robbins Pathologic Basis of Disease 6th edition
Goljan - RR Pathology 2004 edition (no cd)
Wilcox - HY Biochemistry 2nd edition
Marks, Marks, Smith - Basic Medical Biochemistry A Clinical Approach 1996 edition

By the way, all of these books already have like massive highlighting in them (especially the anatomy texts) so is it worth it to get a newer cleaner version of any of the texts or just use these ones passed onto me?

Well, I am personally "highlighted-stuff" averse so I would buy the new editions of the books. That being said, you don't need to buy all new books right now. You may need to feel out the lecture notes given to figure out whether or not you need to supplement with texts. I would prob not buy anatomy atlases--Rohen is great for studying for practicals and you can quiz yourself using the numbers--highlighted or not.

I think the anat books will be ok. Anatomy hasn't changed that much since 2003. I believe the current version of Costanzo is the third edition still. The biochem books you may want updated and I am not sure about path books.

Good Luck on your first year!

Thank you guys! Seems like I will be set for Anatomy. I'll take your advice and wait to see how the lecture notes are before purchasing my own books. I'll probably leave most of the other stuff behind until we start the subject in school... then I can just bring over additional texts when I visit home for Christmas or something. 👍
