I'm going to apply, for the second time in a row, for a scholarship which I applied for and received last year. I had to submit a self-intro essay and another essay detailing why I needed the scholarship. It was a nightmare to write them, so painful. I don't want to go through the torture of writing them again so I'm thinking of just modifying the essays slightly and using them again for the application. Would judges notice, get turned off, or take points off for using similar essays?

They might and they might - it depends on the scholarship, I'm sure. That said, I don't think you have to completely rewrite. With some decent modifications/updates your essays can read like new, without having to go through a huge amount of strife for the second year in a row. Surely you've done something in the past year that makes you an even better recipient - toss that in!
