The USMLE was created to test graduate of medical schools and certify to the states who use the exam that the candidate for medical licensure has fulfilled the requirement. Through out the tenure of the examination it has been contingent to take USLME part 3 on the successful completion of medical school studies, and passing the three parts before it.
In addition it has been the large fees charged to medical students and physicians which has developed the questions and testing process.
Two years ago the USMLE began giving a watered down version of the UMLE part 3 to nurses who hold the DNP degree, with out even requiring USMLE part 2- clinical skills testing.
Politics aside, no medical based testing center should be involved with another professions' certifying process using the questions from the medical test. The fact that they are linking it to the USLME part 3 will only serve to confuse the public and muddy the waters of all the hard work it takes to become a physician. To add insult to injury, the fees charged these nurses have been a fraction of what medical students and physicians pay.
Students need to speak up to their respective schools to demand the USLME stop this practice or the schools should develop a new board independent of the USMLE.
