Probably been discussed before, but can't find a recent thread....

I'm just curious about what scores people were getting on USMLE World, and then how you ended up doing on Step 2.

All you have to do is post two numbers...... 🙂

Thanks folks, and good luck with everything!!

So, since I read this thread in preparation, I thought I would contribute my exp and numbers, although I don't know my score yet.

Step 1 was 237.

I took NBME 1 this summer to see how prepared I was and scored a 600
Took NMBE 2 few weeks ago after doing all of USMLE World and scored 670
I decided to use those again because they predicted my Step 1 score well.

My final average on USMLE World was 67%, first time through all questions was 64%. Did USMLEWorld over period of 1 month. Also did the free questions the USMLE releases, scored >80% on all.

Also used First Aid and Secrets, more so in the past week.

I studied pretty hard my whole third year and did well on all of the shelf exams- I think this is the best prep you can do.

Took the test today and it felt like the longest shelf I have ever taken. My exam was heavy on medicine, with a little ob/gyn and peds mixed in. The exam is much more straightforward than USMLEWorld, and the practice NBMEs are the closest to the real thing. Aside from the shelf exams. Those were the real thing, I guess. I feel generally they are never trying to trick you- generally I read the question and try to guess what they are getting at. Using that technique, I can almost always get down to two answer choices.

I will post my score when I get it! good luck all.

step two - 210

I used crush the boards, Kaplan notes, and USMLE world (59% unused questions in 46 question blocks). I took a total of three weeks to do all of the above. I probably could've done better but oh well.

BC

I just got my score yesterday, exactly 4 weeks after the test (including Thanksgiving vacation time)
SOOOOOO happy about my score.
I studied for the test for long time (at least for me), may be total of 3 months, on and off.
I did UW, I think about 75% done, tutor mode, ~50~60% correct & used Kaplan for 3 weeks. Took 2 NBME test, #1 month before, #2 1 week before.

#1 NBME test got ~199
#2 NBME test got ~207
Actual Step 2 CS, got 225!!!!😀
Great improvement from Step 1 score of 196.

I didn't get great scores like many people on this forum, but I am very happy.

Used USMLEworld, First Aid for Step 2, and Crush Step 2...that's it. I studied pretty hard during 3rd year and I think that is key to doing well on this exam. Raw shelf scores: OB/GYN 80, Psych 86, Medicine 87, Peds 76, Surgery 85. Nothing superstar, just trying to give you as much info as possible, because I was always looking to see if anything looked like a good predictor of step 2 scores.

Finished 71% of USMLEworld with an average of 63.5%, no repeats, all in timed mostly random 46 question blocks. Sometimes I'd do a one subject exam just after studying that subject.

Studied for 3 weeks 6-8 hours/day. Much less stressful and intense than step I studying.

Did not do the NBME practice tests because from reading others' posts it seemed they weren't worthwhile; I also didn't really care and wasn't going to postpone my test date no matter what and just wanted to get the thing over with. I figured I knew I would pass it and if I'd bomb it I just wouldn't release my score since my residency application was in.

I did do the USMLE free released questions and got 39/43/42 for an overall ~90%.

Step 2 score: 246/99

Up 9 points from step I.

USMLEworld was money. I got about 5-10 questions on the real exam that were almost verbatim from USMLEworld.

Overall I'd say that the real exam was much more straight forward than USMLEworld questions and more like the free released questions, but not as easy. The exam itself was brutal just because of how physically and mentally draining it is...that's one long day, however much less anxiety provoking than step I.

If I were to do it again, I'd do just what everybody else says...I'd do more questions from world. Although those questions did really drag on and piss me off sometimes with the detail the explanations go into, they were well worth the $99 or whatever it was. There were some ups and downs like when I'd nail a 74% on a block of questions to come back on the very next block and hit a 45%...it sounds like this happens to everyone so try not to worry so much about it.

Hope this helps and best of luck.

I got about 65% on USMLEWorld, ended up with a 270+(!!!). Step 1 was 245, so that is an omgwtf improvement.

WTF that is the second feinberg-er with 270+ on this thread...what are they feeding the third years there?

USMLE World 69% 1st time through non-timed random questions.
Did 400 missed questions
Studied:
Step Up to Medicine
1st aid for step 2

NBME test 3 -predicited 255

Step 1 -244
Step 2 CK- 261

Studied questions for about 1.5 weeks immediately following the end of 3rd year clerkships, and did a quick run-through of questions from Brochert's Mock Exam about 3 months prior. Otherwise, just did studying throughout the year for the subject exams. Family was my last, so that was probably helpful.

Step 2 CK = 262/99

NBME form 2, 4 wks before: 700 (256)

Brochert's Mock Exam: 80.5% 3 months prior, 91.5% during last week

Qbook: didn't keep track, but probably ~80%

USMLE CD, 3 days prior: 43/42/40

Didn't use UW

Just took the exam this past week.

Step 1: 253/99
NBME 1: 700/256 ~1 month before exam
USMLEWORLD: 71% random, timed, once through
USMLE CD: 44/44/43 timed

1. B&W
2. Step-Up to Medicine
3. Blueprints OB/GYN
4. FA Step2CK for final review

I am just glad I had enough sleep to endure the day. All questions were answered and come what may in 4 weeks or so.

Took it this past week as well.

1) Did about 75% of UW, averaged 61%
2) Read through FA Step II CK twice
3) Read through Secrets once

Studied for about a month.

Most questions were very similar to UW. However, on average, I think my exam had MUCH LONGER passages than UW's. I found myself having to "skim" a lot through the passages to have enough time to finish the sections. Oh well, we'll see 😎

I took the CK exam early last week. I did some of the UW questions a few months back, but my prep got interrupted and delayed so I never completed them. I completed about 900 of the 2200 QBank questions and reviewed the explanations to an additional 500-or-so questions beyond the 900 I completed.
The exam was fair, for the most part. The difficulty was less than UW but similar to QBank (though harder than QBook). Many of the questions had long stems, but time was not a problem for me. A lot of the questions with lomger stems had a lot of extraneous info anyway, so they didn't necessarily take that long if they were easy.
As for percentages, my UW scores were pretty weak (high 40s, los 50s, average around 50%, maybe 1-2% less), but that was early in my prep. My QBank average was 57%, which the Step 2 CK score predictor estimates to be 183, just one point above passing. However, I had forgotten a lot of the info from First Aid when I did these QBank questions. I also reviewed the QBank explanations, parts of Deja and solidified my FA knowledge before the test, so I was much better prepared on test day than when I was doing QBank.
I would recommend using FA as a source of info and then QBank for questions. I liked QBank more than UW. Deja was nice, though I only got through certain sections at the end. They were useful, however.
I felt much better after Step 2 than Step 1, so I hope I passed! One bit of advice is not to over emphasize or trivialize the important of any topic(s), as they're not evenly represented on the test. It is common for esoteric/less relevant topics to be questioned more than the 'important' ones, so try to have a broad base of knowledge going in! Good luck!

For real what is going on there at NU during the 3rd year and can I have some of that?

I guess $40,000 in tuition buys a lot of clinical training. Seriously though, Doc Ivy is a hard-working genius hottie. I think I just had a good day at Prometric.

COMLEX 2PE=PASS
COMLEX 2CE=581/88 PASS
COMLEX 1=687/89 PASS
USMLE step2CK=239/97 PASS
USMLE step2CS=still waiting for results, but pretty sure I passed.d
USMLE step 1=246/99 PASS

hello!
I just took the exam yesterday so I thought I would add a quick tip, and then post my study numbers and methods if they actually pan out. For now, I am doubting they will since I feel so unsure about the exam.

Anyway, it depends on what kind of studyer you are, but I can read a lot of facts fast, and have a pretty good memory, so I didn't take the advice of 'don't learn anything new the day before the test', and I'm glad I didn't. I did about a hundred questions between the night before the test and the morning of the test, and I think there were 2 questions I only got right because of that. I wish I had the willpower to get through all of USMLEWorld, but alas, I only did about 1200 questions. They do get a bit repetitive though after you've done that many.

I took the exam yesterday and I finished wanting to throw up because it was so DAMN hard. I couldn't believe it. It was difficult from the very first block. There were times when I just stared at the questions trying to figure things out. But most of the time I just going and the anxiety escalated. I so wanted to just stand up and quit 2 hours into it. What the hell! People kept saying it was so much easier than Step 1. Umm NO! I felt so much more confident leaving after Step 1. I knew I had passed after the exam. But Step 2......I have a really bad feeling about it. I don't know what I'm going to do if I fail. I'm going into radiology for goodness sake. Did anyone feel the same way? Some comforting words would be nice right now.

Thanks in advance.

Hey nathan, you could've just had a really difficult exam and remember that your score is a function of the previous performance of all the medical students who have had the same questions, it is not an absolute function of the number of correct answers. I don't know how much you studied or what you used, but the vast majority of people pass. The numbers are, for the most part, on your side.

quinn,
that raises an interesting question. there seems to be tons of speculation as to how exactly scores are arrived at. i have heard several, among the top:
out of 3xx questions, xx are "experimental" and thrown out.. leaving 300, so the 3 digit score is # correct out of 300..
also most correct and most missed are thrown out, leaving 300..
several others.
i wonder if anyone knows for sure? if in fact there are specific test forms that are graded against others with the same form, that would make alot of sense. i wonder if there is a way to verify that?

My experience was very similar. My first two blocks were killers and exhaustion at the end didn't help. Unlike Step 1 where I could remember 2/3 of the material after the exam, I simply had no idea as to what hit me despite studying for nearly three months.

Thankfully, I passed solidly and you probably did as well.

The problem the NBME is up against is being able to come up with a test of comparable difficulty for all examinees across time despite using different questions.

The Kaplan folks guessed that about 30-50 questions on every version are experimental, where you are doing the NBME a favor by testing out the questions for later use. Up to another 10 questions or so will be thrown out, as they do not match the statistical profile they developed when they were experimental.

The three point scale is adjusted so that a 220 (or whatever) is equally difficult to obtain, whether the exam was taken three years ago or yesterday. So, one really doesn't know how many questions one has to get right to pass as virtually each version is different (considering new and experimental questions), but that individual questions within that version are compared to other's performances.

that sounds about right, i have heard it presented that way in the past.
ck crushed me, (4 days ago) there were a few easy q's (maybe too easy?!) but for the most part it was extremely difficult i felt.
alot of folks said they saw 10 r so q's right off world,
well i made it through 100% of world AND did most of my incorrects over, and i saw zero repeats. maybe the nbme took some time and cleaned those q's out...
i had a TON of obgyn/psych... which are 2 of my higher scoring areas
(high 60's) in world so i am hoping it bodes well for me..
i wonder if the experimental q's count toward your score? i wonder if there is any way under the sun to find out exactly how nbme scores these 🙁

Adam addresses what I was getting at. Also, since the number of experimental questions vary for each individual exam, there is no true absolute score, i.e., a 300 may be the high score on one test but a 320 may be the highest on another. After all is said and done, per the NBME corrections, that same 320 should be equally as difficult to obtain as the 300 and apparently the scores are adjusted accordingly, as Adam said, based on the average being set at 216-224. This is what the 3rd year clerkship director at my school said for step I scoring. I haven't read/heard anything from the NBME regarding the specifics.

i wonder if the experimental q's count toward your score? i wonder if there is any way under the sun to find out exactly how nbme scores these 🙁

I don't think so.

They haven't been 'field tested' and therefore lack validity. In essence, the NBME does not know what is measuring on an experimental question until they have developed a performance profile.

Then, later if it doesn't live up to that profile, it may get thrown out.

For instance, imagine a new experimental question on treatment of cardiac failure.

The NBME will place this experimental question out in the pool until they collect enough responses (for argument's sake, let's say at least a thousand).

They will then know, that of those thousand responses

Option A) was choosen 15% of the time
Option B) was choosen 8% of the time
Option C) was choosen 45% of the time (and is correct)
Option D) was choosen 20% of the time
Option E) was choosen 12% of the time

Then, they can assign a degree of difficulty to the question to weigh it appropriately in an exam.

However, if in live testing, the profile is not met within certain limits, it means that the question cannot be used as a "true" measurement of your abilities. (This is probably one of the reasons it takes at least three weeks to get your score back and longer if you take the exam during peak season. The NBME is still figuring out how appropriate the new questions are.)

Perhaps, because protocols have changed or because the initial experimental sample size was too small, etc... So, it is then thrown out and not counted either way (and perhaps sent back to the question writers to try again).

So, since I read this thread in preparation, I thought I would contribute my exp and numbers, although I don't know my score yet.

Step 1 was 237.

I just got my score today from the dean's office and I took it 12/4. I cannot believe I scored a 271. I will reiterate doing well your 3rd year and acing shelf exams are the best way to do well on this test.

Step I: 220
Step II: 221

Studied 4 days of pure USMLE WORLD questions averaged around 59%. I think the best predictor is (as stated above) third year performance and shelf-exams. Good luck to those who have not taken this test!

congratulations!

anyway, I have been searching for a copy of the goljan written notes. I already have the audio...is there someone out there willing to help? if you want send me a private message. I would really appreciate it =)

Hi guys,
Let us review some of the books and courses available for Usmle Step 2 CS for the benefit of all the test takers. Please post your comments and ideas here.

Having tried different courses through friends, I think this what I found.

UW- Has about 70 cases which are reasonably representative. There are a few cases that are not covered. Some concerns as to whether you have time do all the things. Overall, good quality cases. Price is a bit high.

UsmleSource - This is relatively new course that has about over 100 cases with some video case discussions. I personally used this and what I liked about it is the approach that is more practical using a few mnemonics. They use the Mnemonics LIQOR AAA and PAM HUGS FOSS all through the course which I personally used it when I took my exam. I think it helped me to gather all the pieces of info in history without thinking too much.
The case discussions are OK, a bit detail oriented, and the price is lower than UW given the number of cases. The videos kind of go over the case in 10-15 minutes and are good. Can practice Patient note. I think it is the best bang for your bucks.

FA - I have not used it.

Virtual-usmle - I have not used it.

Among the books, I think OSCE is a reasonable source even though it is designed for a different purpose. The cases are nicely presented. You should not completely rely on it but use one of the online courses like UsmleSource or UsmleWorld to suppliment it.

Also SDN, ValueMD, Prep4Usmle are good sources for case discussions.

Other things that need to be reviewed include - CS courses with SP's like passcsa, C3NY, Kaplan CS course etc. Please post your experiences here!

Overall, no matter what course you take, practice is the key.

There are several review sources out there for the CS..but in my opinion FA is all you need. Know that well and the mneumonic liqor AAA PAM HUGS FOSS and you will coast through this exam!

usmle world: about 57% and did about 600-700 questions

Step II score: 217

I thought I did better, but what the hell... I passed. It won't affect my getting in to a decent program...

Took the exam Dec. 22nd.
USMLE Step 1: 253
Shelf Exams: 99 on Psych, mid-low 80s on the rest.
USMLE World: ~70% at ~65% correct, browsed First Aid and did questions between interviews for a couple weeks.
USMLE Step 2: 259

my personal opinion...usmle world rocks! the questions are harder on usmle world than the actual test, so i actually moved a lot faster through the questions during step 2. it is also a lot cheaper than kaplan!!!

Just took Step II yesterday. Did about 1700 questions in USMLE world... I was so sick of it by the end, I thought there was a decent amount of repititon. I had like a 69% average. Overall though, I think it was a solid resource, and pretty much just used it as my primary studying tool- grazed through Boards and Wards. Test was not as intense as USMLE world and similar to Step I, came out regretting I spent so much time studying- this isn't arrogance, everyone I talk to says the same thing. I'll put up my score when it comes in.

I studied ~ 2 weeks - read FA and crush for the 1st week then did 4-5 46q blocks, random timed for the 2nd week:

avg was about 65% and I completed about 50-60% of the questions
I got 233 (94)

I had gotten a 231 on step 1, but studied like a mofo (that insane reading robbins schedule online) from mid march-june for that one

step I: 238/94
step II: 258/99

USMLEworld: finished about 80% of questions one time through, ave ~ 68%
repeated some questions in my weak areas.

NBME test 1: 720/259 about 1 week before actual exam

Shelf scores: Ob 83, Peds 83, IM 81, FM 83, Surg 79, Psych 88

I wished I would have studied the immunodeficiency disorders more - I swear I had 6 questions on this and probably missed all of them.

Almost all answers to the questions were in FA. As everyone says, UW was way more difficult. Also used the kaplan Q-book since I did not have access to a computer the entire time i was studying. I was also interviewing at the time, and I don't recommend that at all. I also took the test on Dec 23. Again, I don't recommend that either.

Step 1:239
Step 2: 229

Took it on 12/29. Kind of expected the drop off for as little as I studied for it relative to how much I studied for step 1.

I put in 2 weeks of work, between 3-6 hours a day (some days like 1 hour, what can i say i'm a 4th year). Used only Crush Step 2 and Usmleworld questions, Did 100 percent of UW with no repeats, average of 62 percent.

Prepping for this exam would have been much easier had I taken it a little closer to the end of 3rd year. Especially during interview season I had a complete lack of motivation, I'm sure I would have done much better had I taken it when all the random peds and psych questions were fresh in my mind. That said, if you're just looking to pass like I was, a couple weeks of leafing through Crush and doing UW should be more than sufficient to pass.

Averaged ~70% on USMLE World and completed 80% of it. Received a 270+ on Step 2 CK! Just like Wrigleyville, my reaction was OMG!!!WT??? as it was a 20+ point improvement from Step 1 for me. USMLE Secrets helped as well, but I primarily used UW to study. Overall, I feel that the shelf exams were the best preparation. I studied hard for those and did very well. Reading this board allayed my anxiety before the exam. Good luck to all. :luck:

USMLE WORLD 68%
STEP 1 - 240
STEP 2 - 265

most shelf exams >97th percentile except medicine 88th

I just took CK yesterday, and it seemed like the longest damn test I have ever taken, Step 1 included. By the 5th block, I was bored to tears and thought that stems just kept getting longer. I was so happy to leave Prometric that I actually left my jacket and had to go back and get it today.

Brief background: I took a year off between third and fourth year and worked in pathology, causing me to forget many of the clinical "gems" that I learned during third year. Many of the pharm knowledge "tidbits" I picked up were gone, and it was a pain trying to learn things again that I had forgotten. I did, however, become intimately more familiar with neoplastic disease, which was somewhat helpful. Because I had been off the wards for so long I gave myself three weeks to review. I used FA for Step 2 CK, select sections of Boards and Wards that I remembered being helpful for my Shelf exams (Medicine, Pediatrics). I also did USMLEworld. Studied anywhere from 4-6 hours per day, and did 100-150 Q's per day. Took a few days off here and there. Probably less rigid schedule than Step 1 (duh).

For those that are big into correlations:

Step 1: 246/99
Shelf scores (percentiles):
Medicine: 98th
Pediatrics: 99th
Surgery: 94th
Family Medicine: 99th
Our school did not give shelf exams in Psych or OB/GYN.
USMLEworld: 67% (random, 46 question blocks, unused, 100% complete)
NBME Assessment 1: 680/252

Overall, I thought it was doable given how little in terms of pharmacotherapy and "next step" stuff I actually remembered from third year. I think if you give yourself a little extra time to review pharm you'd be in good shape. I probably should have just taken at the end of third year when things were still very fresh-- probably would have done much better with a third of the effort. I'll update in 3-4 weeks when I get it back. Good luck to everyone.

If you did well on the shelf exams I dont think you should put too much effort into studying for step2.

agreed. i got a used copy of crush and first aid and appleton and and lange question book. decided not to splurge for usmleworld and did fine. shelfs are good prep for ck.

USMLE World: 75% completed, got about 55% cumulative

Step 2: 239!

(Step 1: 224)
Good inspiration for me!
I am worried I won't get the score above 90 in the real test, because my UW score is around 55%. Your result really encouraged me not give up my goal.
Good Job!

Step 1: 244
NBME practice exam, 1 week into studying: predicted score 220
USMLEWorld: 70% complete, 63% average, random questions first time through
Studied 1st aid only, read 1x through.
Step 2: 252!! yayy!!! (not that it matters at this point, but still nice!)

Step 1: 213

USMLE World: 65-70% averages the last week, 65% cumulative
NBME 3 days before: 242

Step 2: 238

Obviously huge improvement from step 1! 🙂

I got cumulative 64% on USMLE World once through (only thing i used besides FA), actual Step 2 CK was 245.

Got scores back today:

Step 2: 270
Step 1: 257

did all of kaplan qbank and studied hard for shelf exams.
