Probably been discussed before, but can't find a recent thread....

I'm just curious about what scores people were getting on USMLE World, and then how you ended up doing on Step 2.

All you have to do is post two numbers...... 🙂

Thanks folks, and good luck with everything!!

I had 2 weeks off to study for it, but bought the review material during my penultimate year of med school, using it along with rotations. I took it midway through my final year (had USCE and a good bit of research in the interim). It totally depends on your own personal situation. You've been studying for a while and you've got plenty of time - just keep striving.

Sorry if this elsewhere, couldn't find it. Does anyone know around what percent of the world self-assessment correlates with ~240? Also, anyone if the self-assessment and world qbank are comparable in difficulty (i.e., if you are scoring 80% in one, would you be scoring around 80% in the other)?

It's tough to correlate UW% and score on the actual as your UWorld score doesn't include many variables. I personally scored around high-70s on my first run through UWorld and nearly 90% on my second run through. My UWSA was 84% (I'm almost certain) which equalled 260. They're about equal in terms of difficulty but you'll have covered the majority of the concepts arising in UWSA through the QBank.

It's better to use World solely as a learning resource and to track your progress using the self assessments.

Edit: Having done the exam, NBMEs are definitely outdated and UWSA is more reflective of the actual question style in the exam.

Sorry to trouble you again but how would you compare the exam to step 1?

Tougher? Easier? Longer questions?

Thanks once again

While taking the exam, I felt it was more difficult/time consuming. I think this was true because I felt that you had to think more in depth to answer the questions as compared to step 1.

This is true - there's definitely more thinking. You can't memorise for CK to the same extent as for Step 1. However, the stems are long - very long. I took no heed of the warnings on the forums stating this as I always finish NBME/ UWorld blocks with at least 20 minutes to spare. However, on this exam I was running deep into the last 5 minutes on every block.

It's neither more difficult nor easier - it's just different.

So I have my CK in 3 days...Im a 4th year in a US school.

I only gave myself 12 days to study and right now im done with about 50% of UWorld averaging at 70% on the blocks. I dont think ill be able to finish all of UWorld before my exam, so im wondering what sections to focus on. Some of my classmates mentioned that OB and Peds was pretty heavy on their tests. Other are mentioning there was a lot of medicine. Any tips on what to focus on during the next few days?

Stats:
-Current UWorld cumulative: 78% correct (but I feel like im making a lot of lucky guesses lol)
-HP/Honors on more shelf exams
-I took step 1 in 2010 and got a 242
-Using UW and SUS2

Any tips on what to focus on?
I really dont want to postpone this test...but am worried at this point

Dude, 78% is solid with that Step 1 score backing it up. I'm all for aiming as high as you can, but don't postpone your test or stress out for it. You're well into the safety zone and right where you should be with 3 days left.

Make sure you have your basic preventative medicine nailed to perfection (including PPV/NPV, etc. equations) to avoid losing out on easy points, then re-read MTB if you can. Give a solid half-day to Behavioral Science if your average is below 85% in that section (best improvement-per-unit-of-effort-spent, IMO, even though it usually feels worthless when you're reviewing it) and review whatever makes you feel confident. You didn't get this far in life just to disregard your gut instinct on studying, so trust that. 😉 Good luck!

On that note, I just checked the NBME site and it looks like I'll get my score on Wednesday. Nice! (I thought I was feeling pretty chill about it - but then I started having crazy stressful dreams about getting a terrible score, then getting called and yelled at by the Dean. I don't know why. The USMLE is driving me crazy.)

I take the exam in two weeks or so; regarding these massive stems in the real exam i keep hearing bout, are they long because of many distracters? Or do they have various helpful hints so that you catch the next if you miss the first?
I recall step 1 giving multiple hints most questions.

Are you thinking you'll get it back because your print permit link disappeared? I took it in 12/22 and was hoping it would come back tomorrow but my print permit link is still there. I have CS coming up in a couple weeks so I'm wondering if that is why it didn't disappear.

.... whoa, that's weird since I took it on 12/27. Yeah, the link just disappeared yesterday.

Actually, it's a case of both.

If, like me and most others, you read the last sentence first, you have some idea of what you're dealing with. You go back to the start and read through the entire 20 lines or whatever and you say, "that's exactly what I thought it was - that was a waste of time". Due to the anxiety associated with the exam, you're going to play it safe and read the question irrespective.

I always give this example - and this happened about 3-4 times during my exam. You read the last question and say "that's a barn-door condition X", then you go back and read the first two lines and say, "oh wow, it's actually condition Y". Then, buried deep in the middle of the question, there's a massive U-Turn and it ends up being condition Z. Note: I say 'condition' but it's far more likely to apply to next step in management.

This is the exception rather than the rule. Usually it's more-or-less what you expected, but they can throw twists and turns at you as well, so you're far better playing it safe.

Hopefully everything up til the new year. At some point they'll have to catch up and get back in the "3rd wednesday" reporting schedule

Sadly not the case. I took mine on December 29th and haven't gotten my score. I haven't heard of anyone from December 27th onwards receiving a score today. December 22nd test takers will certainly get their scores today.

Hrm... well I havent gotten mine (yet) and I took in on 12/22

EDIT: nevermind, got an email that it will be released. thanks!

i have never posted before but over the years these forums have helped me tremendously and i think i owe it to you guys.

due to unforeseen circumstances, i was forced to take this exam by dec. 31. i found this out in september and was about to start an intense rotation that ended just weeks before the deadline. i freaked out but figured out a way to study some how, some way whenever i could.

i took the kaplan ck live prep course over the summer and can't say it was worth it for me. for step 1 it worked so i decided on a whim to take it for ck. i can say i got a bunch of free textbooks but thats about it. i only liked a couple of the lecturers and perhaps was not motivated at that point to take the exam very soon. anyhow when i found out in september about my deadline, i purchased step up to step 2 and did DIT 1 time through, no UWORLD. after DIT once, i started UWORLD and ended up with a 60% average (not so hot). i ended up going over all my incorrect just to cover my weak concepts and then i started to take practice tests every week or 2 before the exam (dec. 21).

6 weeks before- NBME1- 360/197
4 weeks before- NBME2- 450/218
3 weeks before- NBME3- 430/214
2 weeks before- UWSA- 640/247
4 days before- NBME4- 550/242

i'm a big proponent of taking practice exams online to make sure it is scored correctly and then rely on sites like nbmeanswerkeys.blogspot.com to help clear doubts. as you can see over time my score did improve. like i said, i was in a heavy rotation and during all of my spare time i read through secrets, which is very helpful!

during the actual exam, i felt it was very different from NBME and UW. the questions were technically similar but just put differently. i don't remember specific details about the exam but i know that when i walked out i cried/freaked out/felt like it had all gone not as i had planned. for 4 weeks i thought about what would happen if i were to fail and how i was going to do it all over again.

i got my score today (240/83) and am pretty happy. although you can always want more, with the time i was given and the sources i used, i think it went well. don't freak out after the exam is the main point of this post. you'll drive yourself insane and i think most of the time it works out anyways. good luck to everyone who is taking it soon!👍

I heard today's scores ran up until December 27th. Looks like another week of waiting.

I took mine on the 27th and got my score back today.

I was really thrilled with my 237, even though it's on-the-nose average. I only gave myself a week and a half of dedicated study time - kind of a gamble, but it got me where I needed to be in the end.

For people who are interested in the predictive side of things:
- UWSA1 four days before the real deal = 226
- UW Qbank average = ~70%, but lopsided (closer to 80% in ob/gyn and peds, closer to 65% in IM) and in tutor-mode, not timed.
- Kaplan QBank average (only 40% completion) = 64%, but again, tutor-mode - not timed.
- official 2-digit score = 82.

Good luck to everyone still waiting!

You took yours on December 31st and got your score today?! I took mine on December 29th and still haven't gotten my score.

he said in the post that he took it dec 21st. calm down. you'll probably get your score next week.

a piece of general advice for future test-takers...don't take a practice test 4 days before the real thing, especially if you have already exceeded your goal score or are close to it. it is a waste of time and money and adds nothing to your studying. you would be much better off using those 5 hrs or so doing UWorld questions or rereading topics you are weak at.

I took my exam on 12/28, got my scores back today.

Relevant info:
Used UWorld and SUS2. Did 2/3 of UWorld on timed/timed tutor (previously did another 1/3, but reset).
Took 2 weeks to study.
73% average on UWorld
UWSA 5 days prior - 234
Actual score - 231

I did a first pass of SUS2 at the beginning of my 2 weeks, and annotated as I went through UWorld. I did another pass the week before, and scratched out sections I felt were low yield. I pretty much stopped studying after the UWSA because of the Christmas holiday. The day before, I reread SUS2 and did a quick set of questions.

In regards to the actual test, I felt that the question stems were generally longer and the disease process was a little less clear than on UWorld. There were less "gimme"/easy questions. While I usually finished UWorld sets with about 20 minutes to spare, I ran down to the line on 7/9 actual test sets. Biostats were almost exclusively in the form of pharm brochures and journal articles; I had almost no simple specificity/sensitivity/PPV/etc. type questions.

In retrospect, I would have concentrated more on just finishing UWorld. I wouldn't have bothered annotating SUS2, and would have only done one pass and used it as a reference for missed questions. A pass through of Secrets (which I'd read previously) would have been helpful in the last few days. I should have hit biostats harder (I knew I was weak there, but wasn't expecting so many application-type questions).

My actual results correlated pretty well with my known weaknesses and strengths, and with the UWorld/UWSA evals. The study course I set out for myself was pretty leisurely, as I'm not going into a competitive residency and didn't need to do great, and my grades reflected that. Overall, I'm pretty pleased with my score; I would have loved a 260, but wasn't studying to get one.

hey guys,

just want to thank everyone that takes the time to write about your experience and how you prepped for the exam. It's very useful to me (and I'm sure it's helpful to other readers as well). Congrats to everyone who is done with it!!!

Best

I took my exam last month as a 1st year resident in Canada. I was on surgical rotations so the schedule was very busy and I didn't have much time to review but i had already studied the material during clerkship and for our own Canadian exam (LMCC). I took a week off just before the exam and I did 75% of Uworld once (average score 65%). I also read about 25% of FA over 2-3 months (mostly stuff that we don't cover that well in Canada but that are high yield in the USA for some reason, such as Lyme disease, Coccidiodomycosis/histoplasma etc, syndromes, non HIV immune deficiencies...).

Overall the exam was an endurance test. It was long and I was exhausted by the end of the day. Good timing is key because the stems are long, but they're not much longer than Uworld. I took short breaks because it would give me just enough time to rest before tackling another set. I would take 10-15 mins every 2 sets. I finished early on a couple of blocks which is useful since it can give you more time. When I was writing the exam, it felt as if I was writing another UWorld practice test. It's a great source and it's a shame that we don't have something like that in canada. I ended up with a 252.

I know it's all relative..but does anyone have a sense of what a "bad" ck score is considering the average is 237? Also, how much would it suck if you dropped 20 points vs a solid step 1? Along those lines, has anyone heard of UWSA seriously overpredicting? Just took the test today and planning for the worst!

I got a 266/88. Can anyone explain what the '88' means? I've heard of other people getting 266/99, so why was mine 88?

Here is my basic study approach for those interested: I took NBME 4 before studying and got a ~238. I got 244/99 on step I. I decided not to take any more practice tests because this was close enough to my goal (at or around my step I). I basically just went through UWorld 1.5 times on tutor mode, carefully reading (but not memorizing) all the explanations. I was scoring about 70% by the end. I wrote one line about summarizing the key point of any question I was unclear of and read through all ~20 pages of these once more before the test. I had 3 days left near the end so I decided to do one pass through Step Up to Step 2 (I read it, did not memorize anything). Really pretty painless. I spent maybe 1-2 hours in the gym daily and got into great shape. Probably studied 6-8 hours a day for about 3.5 weeks (over a 5 week period due to interviews). Thought the test was harder than hell and that it did not test anything I had learned. Somehow ended up ok.

For the normal students (non-SDNers)

Took it 12/26.

Step 1 - 210.
Shelfs 65-71%

Studied 4 weeks
UWorld 43% complete, 60% correct overall (did >50% during clinicals and reset for Step 2 studying)
NBME 1(?) 4 weeks out - 181
NBME 2 3 weeks out - 188
UWSA 2 weeks out - 214
NBME 4 1 week out - 214
Step 2 - 212.

Mainly used UWorld and Step 2 Secrets. Also did the pharm questions in Psych Pre-test. Read Secrets 1.75x. Tried to do 2 timed, mixed question blocks a day with review.

Test day: I was so ready to do this. Energy was good until the last block where I was dragging, but perhaps as a sign of compassion, the question stems were shorter, more reflective of UWorld (did others experience this?). Content wise, I don't think there were any surprises. There were a few ?s where I wished there was an "other" box to put in my answer because I didn't like any of theirs. But only a few.

I left feeling awful. My biggest problem test day was that the question stems were 30% longer than Uworld or the NBME sample exams. I am a slow reader (seriously). Being a slow reader and longer stems resulted in difficulty with pacing. Did read all the questions, but I really could have used another 5 min/block. During prep, I was fine time wise on blocks and sample tests.

In hindsight, I would have used FA instead of Secrets. I feel I had content deficiencies beyond those discussed in Secrets. Feel FA is more complete and would have been more beneficial. I chose Secrets based on comments on this thread, experience with Step 1 - thought FA was a little overkill, and being a slow reader, Secrets is 100 or so pages shorter than FA giving me more time to do ?s.

I wanted to score in the 220s so I'm a little disappointed, and maybe I could have had I not had timing problems. UWSA and the last NBME were right.

Great score.

Why did you choose SUS2 over FA CK? I know DIT uses SUS2 instead of FA. Was DIT worth it?

Great job on the scores everyone!
8 days to go and the stomach acid is starting to pour.

Syncity, whats the scene with your score? Any news yet?

@recent test takers (or old ones for that matter) , which area did you think wouldve been very high yield if you had a chance at a re-run? I will have five days after i take my self assessment and want to use them efficiently. Like I remember coming out of step1 i thought ID and immunology offers extremely easy points.

Edit: my bad syncity, guess you're still waiting. Goodluck🙂

All of the EBM analysis stuff. It should take an hour or less to have types of error and those equations/their application burned onto you brain. I had at least 1 (and up to 3-4) such questions per block, and if you can knock them out in 20 seconds it's guaranteed easy fast points.

I'll update on Wednesday as I anticipate it will be out then. I'm pretty clueless as to what kind of figure I'll be looking at on the day.

I agree with the above poster. It won't take long - but going over some of the algorithms like cervical screening are useful and some of the surgical ones. I found Secrets and UWorld notes handy for the final days. Conrad Fischer's card deck was also pretty good for some last minute revision.

DIT was totally worth it. as i said, i didnt think i got much out of kaplan and DIT really summarized all the most pertinent info possible into 15 days. kaplan cannot be done in 15 days even if you tried! so THATS why i used SUtoS2.

Great job on the scores everyone!

READ secrets in 2-3 days. the day before, try to relax. yes, and algorithms are helpful for pap smears and breast examinations once a lump is discovered.

Took my CK on 12/29 (Saturday) and this morning 1/22 (Tuesday) my scheduling permit link disappeared. Looks like the next batch of scores is coming out tomorrow.

Took the test last week with only 65% of UWorld complete - 79% correct overall. I honestly felt like the test was ridiculous...Stems were extremely long and I guessed on about 15 per block. I didn't have time to read any of the abstracts or drug ads. God I hope I passed. I feel like it was one of my worse tests...I will update the thread when I get my score back

Last person to post concerns like this with your UWorld aggregate ended up with like a 270. I'm sure everything will be just fine.
