Probably been discussed before, but can't find a recent thread....

I'm just curious about what scores people were getting on USMLE World, and then how you ended up doing on Step 2.

All you have to do is post two numbers...... 🙂

Thanks folks, and good luck with everything!!

Hey guys,
thought I'd write my experience as I am always reading and getting advice from this forum.

Step 1: 241
Step 2: 256
Uworld avg/untimed: 70%
NBME 1 (6 weeks before): 204 (390)
NBME 4 (3 weeks before): 237 (530)

So I took my step 1 in Aug 2011. Did not study at all during my clinicals (post step 1 bliss, I guess). Decided to take 9 weeks to study for step 2ck after my cs. I started off with kaplan videos. I watched 8-10 hours per day and finished watching them in 3 weeks. I skipped ob/gyn as I had just watched them. I took an nbme (204) right after watching the kaplan, which was basically a first pass through the material.
Right after kaplan, I started Uworld qs, untimed, subject order. I would read the section in USMLE secrets corresponding to the subject I was doing in uworld. I would do 3-4 blocks per day after reading secrets. I took thorough notes while doing the questions. I took another nbme after my uworld qs were done which put me at 237. I had 3 weeks remaining. I made a binder with hole punched MTB 2CK for internal medicine, MTB 3 for peds/psych/surgery/obgyn and added my uworld notes to the binder.
In the last 3 weeks, I read the binder 3 times and took the test. I took the day before the test off, didnt open a book nor did I think of the exam.

The test itself was very similar to Uworld in my opinion. I hate to say that nbme questions were focusing on factual recall while uworld/step2ck tested understanding and application. I took breaks between every block and had a 15 min lunch.

I approached this as a step2ck boot camp and went hardcore for the 9 weeks. I took 1 day off per week to binge drink (refresh my mind and release the stress). Hope this was helpful as this was my step 2ck experience in its entirety.

Congrats on a great score! Did you feel the Kaplan videos were worth it at all? They seem a bit like overkill and probably not very useful. I'd think that hitting MTB 2+3 & Secrets like you eventually did could've done the trick.

Kaplan probably did not help, however, I did not feel comfortable jumping straight to review books and since I had the time I watched the videos for first pass through the material. I would suggest against the videos if rushed for time.

Kaplan videos has almost the same information as the MTBs. So it really depends on your style of learning BUT I would do MTBs since they are more up to date than the videos.

Right. I'm sticking to the books. Wanted to hear feedback cause I have friends who were asking what to do, but I had no idea if people used Kaplan videos for CK much. I wasted a lot of time with those videos for Step 1 and in the end it was the books that got me by.

I'm noticing the trend that people are using MTB-3 in addition to MTB-2 to study for 2CK.

Could someone please comment on which subjects MTB-3 is notably better than MTB-2?

I notice maddoc mentioned "peds/psych/surgery/obgyn" for MTB-3, but I'm just curious what people think.

I'll be sure to chime in on that soon. Haven't gotten around to "MTB 3 subjects" yet. Still working on MTB 2/IM.

Does anybody have any feedback or experiences with only studying for 2 weeks? This is what I'm planning to do.

FWIW, I was happy with Step 1 and studied for 4 weeks and felt that the last week was worthless. Planning on doing Uworld again (will have done 1x through all of M3), Step 2 Secrets in the 6 weeks before hardcore studying, and Master the Boards.

As long as you have studied decently hard for your shelf exams (and have done pretty well on them), 2 weeks is plenty.

Like you, I did uworld throughout third year, and then I did 2 weeks of half-ass studying, where I did about 1/2 - 2/3 of uworld and read most of secrets. I didn't think secrets was all that great, as it was almost entirely stuff you should already know after finishing third year. I was very satisfied with my score.

That's my strategy exactly. Despite all of the posts here from people who did six weeks of dedicated studying, at my school most people do it in two weeks.

I think the 6 weeks is more for the lower Step 1 scorers and IMGs. Doesnt seem like as many AMGs require that much time. Most seem to have done well on shelfs and did UW during the year, which is awesome. Just have to get the stamina up for that 9 hours.

Whats everyones take on NBMEs for CK? They don't seem nearly as helpful in terms of prediction as for Step 1.
However, did you feel 'studying' the CK NBMEs was helpful like it was for Step 1?

Haven't taken any yet, so trying to weigh it out.

I'm not a big fan of NBMEs in general, even with the extended feedback. Some of the questions I got wrong I couldn't even figure out what I did wrong.

They do however provide a decent enough gauge. I didn't want to "waste" UWSA till I was fully ready so I used an NBME to tell me what to do. I'd bet their confidence interval isn't as tight as UWorld, but they're decent.

Thanks! I wasn't planning to do UWSA till a week or so before. I definitely will be doing NBME Form 6 though since it just came out. Just wasn't sure about whether or not to do all of them. I guess I'll take a "baseline" soon though.

Good to see you in the CK thread. What ever happened with your Step 1? Never came back to share the news with us.

Good luck the next few weeks. Sounds like you're doing well with UW.

Hi, sorry I didn't get back to the step 1 forum but it didn't go too well : ( I'm just trying to focus on step 2 and keep my fingers crossed!

Likewise I'm saving UWSA for the last week. Have you read out of all the NBMEs which ones are the best? Not sure ill have time to do them all.

When is your exam?

No worries man, I didn't do all that hot either. I'm aiming for end of June. Im getting through the MTB 2 IM and UW IM sections now. After that, plan to hit the MTB 3 topics and go through all of UW once more.

I haven't heard much about the NBMEs for CK, just that theyre not as good as they were for Step 1. I do plan on doing/studying NBME 6 since it just came out. Not sure about the rest.

I forgot to mention this in my original post-test post, but the drug ads on the actual exam were laughable compared to UWorld. The UWorld ads are an exercise in ridiculousness, but the ones on the exam were awesome. I literally had a question where it asked "What type of drug is X" and I opened the ad and it said "X is a something-agonist".

I remember being worried about them before my test, but they were fun questions.

I had a similar experience.
It's like giving you a newspaper to read and asking what does the headline says?

I agree that, as IMGs, we need to focus on 2CK the same way that we had for Step1. Although Step1 is probably at least 80-85% the strength of our application in terms of getting interviews, my guess is that a strong 2CK will be looked upon similarly as a strong LoR would (i.e. it's just another side-element that can have variable strength depending on the particular institution/specialty). Based on what I've read, AMGs can generally get by with not requiring 2CK (or a strong one), but for competitive locations/specialties, a 2CK on par with (or exceeding) the Step1 is necessary.

So rule of thumb:

IMGs need a strong 2CK regardless.
AMGS need a srong one if they're applying where competition is tough.

From what I've seen this past match, based on friends & relatives, LORs for IMGs aren't really worth much, and are more of a formality. (Then again, I feel like most LORs are a formality...and they're just looking for a reason not to take you.) If they're from abroad they're worth almost nothing. Now, if you've done an externship (hands-on) in a ACGME affiliated US program then it may hold some weight. And of course it helps if the person writing it has some pull at the program you're interviewing at. IMG friendly programs (particularly for IM) really take CK into account. Some programs average the 2 Step scores, others have cut-off filters for extending interviews.

And regarding AMGs and CK - my friends all went into the match with ONLY their insane Step 1 stats (250-260+) they all wound up matching in either rads or ortho at top programs. Some had CK scores 20 points lower than their Step 1 scores and seemed to have no problems at all. I guess this could change as it gets tougher every year and scores creep up overall.

Studied for about 5 weeks, maybe 2 hours per night (ive been on pseudo away rotations where ive been driving like an hour or more each way and was way too tired after to study extensively). Used UW, step up, and a quick run through secrets in my last few days. Final UW percentage after completion of all questions: 69%.

NBME 4 at 2 weeks out: 251.

Actual CK score: 241. Lower than I was hoping for, but I will take it. Applying allo EM, and have some strong letters and a great 3rd year, so I am hoping to be fine.

Still waiting on my COMLEX score, but that could be quite a while. Hoping for 650ish.

Can anyone comment on how useful the NBME feedback is for CK for the purpose of fixing your weaknesses?

In other words, if you hit your weakness after one NBME, did your score really improve in that category in the next NBMEs?

For those of you who have taken the test - since a lot of people have been saying they were shocked by the test questions, which did not resemble any of the qbanks - how did Step 2 compare to the third year shelves?

Someone once told me the IM shelf was very similar to Step 2, and I was wondering what others thought. What about for the other topics (surgery, peds, psych, obgyn)?

They are useful. OBGYN was my most hated section (which I find strange since I plan on going to into gen surg) and was consistently my lowest area...even on the real test. How you address those weaknesses is up to you and the results will be such. I did improve on the real deal once I actually focused on OBGYN, but I think I was a little late addressing the problem.

Are people using the blue cover MTB (original edition) or the new edition MTB (pink cover) for MTB 2? Are there any changes?

I'm hesitant to switch to the newer edition of MTB 2 because there is no errata out. If anybody can confirm whether the errata from MTB 2 original edition has been incorporated into the new one it would be appreciated.

Also, if anybody can post some examples of the changes from old to new edition it would be really helpful. Thanks in advance.

I'm using the latest.

Haven't seen the old version so can't comment beyond that, sorry.

Sorry, thought I had replied to this. Thanks for the input!

I really liked how NBME feedback was so helpful for Step 1. I used it very late in my prep, yet still improved on every NBME. Don't want to make the same mistake here and not have time to maximize the feedback.

I'm hoping for a little clarification on "MTB 2" and "MTB 3". I'm assuming this means Master the Boards for Step 2 and Step 3. Is this correct? Are people actually studying from Master the Boards for Step 3 to prepare for Step 2?

Yes. The material for certain CK subjects is better in MTB 3.

Read up a few posts prior in regards to which subjects, etc and you can determine your plan of attack accordingly using that.

I've jumped on the bandwagon and have purchased MTB-3 as well.

It just seems like there's no real comprehensive resource for 2CK as there had been for Step1 (i.e. FA).

I've been asking people how they've prepped / been prepping for 2CK, and the whole process seems rather nebulous.

Are you skipping Kaplan videos/ lecture notes altogether? I've started going through MTB 3 but similar to FA for Step 1, I feel like you need some background to really make sense of everything.

Agree. My focus is definitely UW though. MTBs and Secrets have become more for study structure & a break from the qbank.

I don't know how much MTB I'd be able to retain/recall as its just straight reading like a novel, as opposed to pictures and diagrams like FA was.

I plan on finishing Fischer's 24 comprehensive case videos as well though - practically covers all the high-yield IM.

(Also, I went to FedEx, had them cut the binding off and just put MTB 2 IM, Psych, Ob/Gyn with MTB 3 non-IM topics in spiral binding. Just easier to deal with.)

Clinicals and Step 1 prep are your background. Should be more than enough, IMO. (I guess you could use UpToDate or CMDT if you needed something more.)

My level of interest in Kaplan lecture notes + videos is non-existent. The lecture notes, apart from one small section of the anatomy notes, were a complete waste of time for Step1, and not to mention circumlocutory.

I will go through Kaplan 2CK QBank, however, only because Ijn has specifically said he believes it's helped him ace his shelf exams. And Ijn has some of the best advice out of anyone on SDN.

I agree. The MTBs are like novels. My plan is to read MTB-2+3 as my 2CK foundation before jumping into FA and other stuff.

I've also purchased the Conrad Fischer Diagnostic Test flashcards because I feel like MTB-2 is just a long-winded version of what could otherwise be a succinct list of best initial + diagnostic tests. That's why I believe the flashcards will help reinforce the texts.

In turn, my preliminary train of thought is that MTB-2+3 + Diagnostic Test Flashcards could = solid 2CK foundation. Then FA-2CK + Step Up to Med + SECRETS-2CK as adjunct.

I like the flashcards idea. Might have to try that. I'd bet my retention would be higher going that route. Just haven't heard/read much about it.

Your plan seems extremely thorough. Then again, I think you said you have a solid 18 months. Aiming for a 280+ this time? :naughty:

My friend was telling me the other day he knows a girl who got a 270+ and then a 280+ I nearly fainted when I heard that...

Edit: Went ahead and just ordered the flashcards. They had pretty good reviews. They're so easy to flip once you're done with them...figured why not.

It's the quotidian reading of stuff like that on SDN that really ****s with your head. I got a 262 on Step1 and I feel like it's a decent score.

Nobody scoring that high is normal, but she'd earn herself a date.

This whole time I'm on here reading this whole step 2 studying bit and find this gem.

Anyways, I've been through my 1st pass of uworld - 68% average. In the process of doing DIT 2011 course, half way done and doing the questions I missed in uworld. Contemplating on whether I should do the DIT 2013 course [purchased by my school] + another pass of uworld or just stick to doing another pass or uworld until my exam [July 16th scheduled]. What you guys think?

Step 1 = 225, shooting for neurology or PM&R but would like to get 240s or higher just to be safe

"neurology or PM&R"? 😕

Btw, what book did DIT 2011 follow? That's a solid UW average, and you have a lot of time left (2 months). I'm guessing you're in great shape to get that 240+.

I get the same reaction from attendings lol. prior to my neuro rotation I was all PM&R but I loved neuro and so I am most likely leaning towards that, but still doing some PM&R elective to officially rule it out.

DIT 2011 follows the step up to step 2 2nd edition. It is missing a lot of things but I just filled them in and DIT takes care of the missing stuff in the handout. I had been doing UW over the last 4-5 months [1st 4-5 months of 3rd year was spent doing NOTHING lol]. I am still weak on some things though[ob/gyn] so def need to study more to get my into the 240. Whats a good NBME to take after I am done with DIT to gauge where I should go over the next 2 months.

Timing question.

With 8 blocks of questions and 1 block of rest would this be an appropriate breakdown of the time?

1 - 5 min break - 2 - 5 min break 3 - 5 minute break - 4 - 10 min break - 5 - 15 min break (lunch) - 6 - 10 min. break - 7 - 10 minute break - 9

what do you all think?
