Probably been discussed before, but can't find a recent thread....

I'm just curious about what scores people were getting on USMLE World, and then how you ended up doing on Step 2.

All you have to do is post two numbers...... 🙂

Thanks folks, and good luck with everything!!

Hi,

A month into third year, and my post-step 1 bliss is wearing off. Realizing that it will be time to take step 2 sooner than I want to think . I have a few questions regarding when to take it and a study plan, and am wondering what people think. I got a 245 on Step 1, and need to improve on that for step 2. UWSAs had me in the 250s, and I want to break that for Step 2 (ideally 260+ :naughty:). I want to take it early to get it out of the way and also because everything will be the most fresh at the end of 3rd year. I also don't want to delay SubI's/away rotations. I'm most likely going to be trying for Ortho so 1 SubI and 3 aways means gotta start in July, and my school doesn't allow 3rd year electives.

Throughout the year:

Read the relevant section in First Aid for the Wards

Peds - BRS Pediatrics (is subsidized by school) + CaseFiles + Pretest + Kaplan Qs
OB - OB text required by my school + Pretest + CaseFiles + Kaplan Qs
IM - MKSAP + SU2M + Kaplan Qs
Fam - SU2M + Pretest + Kaplan Qs
Surgery - Textbook + Surgical Recall + CaseFiles + SU2M + Kaplan Qs
(last rotation) Psych - FA for Psych + Kaplan Qs

My questions:

1) Should I be doing UWorld in addition to or instead of Kaplan?
2) For Step 2 I plan on using MTB2/3, S2 Secrets and plogging through UWorld during the last month of my last rotation.
3) Is it possible to study for Step 2 during Psych (we have morning and afternoon clinic, but they are each only ~ 2 hrs long. so 2 hrs clinic, 2 hr break, repeat.....).
4) I am currently looking at taking my final Shelf exam on a Friday, Step 2 CK on a Saturday, and Step 2 CS on the following Monday. We have a week off and then I start an Ortho SubI the following Monday.

I really don't want to use more than MTB 2/3 + UWorld for Step. I'd like to be able to have the virgin percentage as a predictor, but I also don't want to pass up the resource if it would be more efficacious to use UWorld than Kaplan for shelf exams.

Thanks to all in advance.

Just took the exam today, and I felt like it was a lot harder than UW and the NBME exams. I had to blindly guess on at least 3-5 questions per block...which really threw me off.

I took 4 weeks to study while I was on rotation. I used UW, MTB2, and some of Step 2 Secrets. UW was probably the most helpful. The stems felt longer than the ones on UW too. I usually have at least 15 minutes left for each block, but on the real exam, I only had 5 minutes (if that...) left per block to go over 10+ marked/incomplete questions. It was definitely more mentally draining than Step 1. Hoping to at least match my Step 1 score but not sure if that's happening.

Step 1: 256
Shelves: low 80s to mid 90s
UWSA: 265 (3 weeks out)
NBME 4: 265 (2 weeks out)

Seriously? Stop freaking out. You had 4 weeks, look at your prep scores, you'll be fine.

3-5 questions of guessing? Some people would be grateful to have that many per block that they were confident they got correct.

Take a chill pill, go celebrate being done and wait for your 270+ in a couple of weeks.

👍

That's 3-5 questions of blind guesses and another 10 of educated guesses per block. It is what it is. Definitely will be relaxing now and enjoying audition rotations instead! Good luck to future test takers!

👍 For real

I felt like I was "guessing" on at least 30-40% of the test. Granted most of those guesses were between two choices.

Guessing on only 20% of the test will yield you a very good score.

Took the test on July 9th, got my score back on the 31st.

Step 1: 236
Shelf exams: High 70s and low 80s
Uworld - 68% first time pass throughout the year with rotations

I didn't take any NBMEs prior to the test because I felt like I had a pretty strong hold on what I knew and if I had taken one and gotten a bad result I would have freaked out for no reason. I did Uworld and various rotation-specific review books throughout the year and finished on medicine, which was a huge help because everything was so fresh. I had about 2 weeks of dedicated study time, during which I went back over Peds, OB-GYN, etc... During the last couple of days I really hit hard on some things like easy biostats and bread and butter treatments to make sure I got all the gimme points.

The test itself was about like I expected with a very few way out in left field questions, but also some very easy, short, "give the dx" questions. I had lots of OB-GYN, UTIs, and very little straight up surgery. The drug ad and abstract questions (of which I had 3) were very much gimme points, but they sometimes take a while to read and waste some time. I've always been a pretty fast test taker and I felt like time was never an issue on this one, maybe even less so than on step 1. Some people have had some crazy block numbers but all mine were in between 41 and 46 per block. During the second block I had about 5 minutes of "holy crap I still have 6 blocks left after this" thinking, but once I got to halfway it was all downhill. The main thing I would tell all future CK test takers is that these questions can be reasoned out for the most part, unlike a lot of step 1 questions. All in all I felt decent about the test, but my score was a little higher than I thought it would be.

Step 2 CK: 256

When I click on the permit link, it says that the permit is not available, but the link is still there... What does it all mean?! hahahaha

7/24'er here...my permit link is still active, as are two other folks who took the beast on 7/22.

Weird... I'm not sure why mine is gone then. My eligibility period ended July 31st, but I checked over the weekend and it was still there, gone today.

Took the exam August 2.

Step 1: mid-250s
Shelf exams: Mid-70s to low-90s
UWorld: 67% first pass during clerkships, 78% timed random
NBME sample questions: 2 weeks before, 85%
UWSA: 1 week before, 247
NBME 4: 1 day before, offline, 90%, seems to correlate to 250
Materials: MTB2 for medicine/EM and MTB3 for other topics. Would have like to have completed Secrets, and taken my practice tests earlier but my prep pace was slower than ideal.

In general, I felt more challenged by Step 2 materials than with Step 1. I generally consider myself a confident test-taker but never felt truly comfortable with the Shelf/Step 2 materials. Compared to Step 1, the amount of prep and materials recommended ranges much more and no universally established materials besides UWorld. As well, for Step 2 a fair amount of questions felt like one would only know the answer having seen a similar question or read about it specifically. Less problem-solving and more knowing the next step that sometimes can't really be reasoned through other than the data supports it. During shelfs and practice exams, more often than I liked, I felt like many of the answer choices could work (i.e. on wards we often did many of the diagnostics simultaneously) and interestingly my best Shelfs occurred after explicitly strategizing to not think too much and answer very simply.

Test day: Questions ranged from 41-44. Fair mix of topics, don't recall a specific topic being more heavily weighted. Had about two drug ads, at least one intermediate biostatistics questions in each block, and a few interesting questions on quality improvement not covered in Uworld. Questions are similar to UWorld, but even more similar to Shelfs. I made sure to get my caffeine and would finish most blocks with about 10 minutes left to go over marked questions (ranging from 5-15 depending on the section). Block 3 and 4 were rough as I had about a third of the questions marked and had minimal to no time to review the marked questions. Used up the entire break time. I went through blocks 3 and 4 back to back, but realized I am more comfortable taking breaks after each block and did so for the others. Long test, but felt focused through the end. Still, I came out from the exam much less confident than Step 1. I ideally would like to score higher than my Step 1, but if I had to put my money on it would say 240s. Impressed with the performance in this forum, will report back with score. Sept 25 seems far away.

hmm..took it on 7/31 and my permit link is gone too..how strange..it took forever to disappear with step I. Is it because my eligibility period ended on the 31st as well?

Took Step II today...or the OBG Boards, not really sure.

I'm not sure what went on in the testing center. It was like watching the Titanic sink, and my dignity went down with it.

Won't know my score for a while, but I should probably get a head start on the retake...

I'm the 19th as well and mine is still there anyone know of the link disappearing the day you get results?

Hmmm, I haven't but I'm not sure. I'm just expecting it next week now. I wonder why our permits are still there. It looks like some people who took it on July 20th last year received their scores on Aug 8th.

Boo.

I'm sure you did fine. We always focus on what we did worse in. I swore my Step 1 was a pure Genetics exam of all subjects 😛

Congrats on being done! I'm jealous 😛 Taking the exam day after tomorrow but done studying!

Good luck drk!

I just hope I passed so I can move on. Its a long exam, and I definitely fell victim to the time crunch on most blocks.

Where do you check to see if your permit link is gone? Is it on the "Check Exam status" screen? I just can't remember where I printed it at but when I go to that screen there is no "print permit" anywhere and the only open box is under "score report date". It could be my permit's gone, but if that's the case then they are moving WAY fast... I took mine on July 26th so I think that's a bit too fast and I'm just not looking in the right place. Help me out, lol!

It's either under "Print scheduling permit" or "check exam status". I still have a link that says "print permit" under "permit availability date". Apparently, it also disappears if your eligibility period is over.

Hmm... I don't have anything that says print permit at all... either on the menu bar on the left or on the "check exam status" page. Under permit available date it says "3/20/13" and my eligibility period ended on 7/31/13. The only thing "missing" is the blank where it says "score report date". Damn... guess that means I might be getting mine tomorrow, lol! That's wicked fast... like 12 days fast, lol! I think the pucker factor just went up a notch... wasn't expecting it for another week or two at least!

I think yours disappeared because your eligibility period is over. I took mine 7/19 and my permit is still there 🙁

Yeah, that seems to be the case. Now it makes me wonder if my permit is gone because I'm getting my scores tomorrow or if it's just because my eligibility period ended. Not sure if anyone has encountered this before but guess I'll just have to wait til tomorrow and see if I get the email or not 🙄

BIG SIGH OF RELIEF

Step 1: 261
Step 2: 272

- dedicated study time of 4 weeks **note: this might seem excessive, but we have no shelf exams at my school**
- used FA, MTB 2/3
- UWORLD: ~78%
- NBME 6: 244 *would not recommend taking this test...useless*
NBME 4: 275
UWSA: 259? can't remember exactly

Took CK 7/18

Step 1: 265

Shelves: 85 to 98

Uworld first time through 78%

Study was 3 hours a day, 2 Uworld blocks a day for 2 weeks. Finished 50% of uworld during dedicated study time at 88%.

NBME 4 at beginning of study period: 260
UWSA 3 days before test: 264

Step 2: 269

Wanted to break 270 but I'll take it.

Well, the people posting their 260+ scores have some pretty high UWORLD averages so it seems to be the normal correlation. I'm just hoping to beat my Step 1 by a couple of points or 20. 😛

Well, I guess the "print permit link" disappearing isn't exactly a fool proof way to judge when your score is coming. My link is gone but I took the test on the 26th but didn't get the email today and didn't get my score. Granted, my eligibility period ended on July 31st so that is probably why my link disappeared rather than it being about my score was going to be released but apparently the link disappearing is NOT a guarantee that you'll get your score in a couple of days. Oh well... maybe next week. 🙁

I guess the 18th was the cut off for score release bummer should have taken it a day sooner haha.

I hope that's not the case cuz if it is then next week the cut off date will be Thursday the 25th and I took mine on the 26th. Not a "huge" issue except that I got all excited that I was gonna get my score today (when my print permit link was gone) and to have to wait another 2 weeks... that's gonna suck.

Thought I could give some insight on my recent experience. Got my score a while ago but hadn't yet posted.

School: Not top 50, no AOA, honors in half of clerkships

Step 1: 238

Shelf:
Surgery - 74
Family - 80
OB/GYN - 81
IM - 85
Neuro - 88
Psych - 89
Peds - 92

CK prep: ~3 weeks
-UWorld: 65% first pass, completed throughout the school year
-Second pass: 76%
-Reviewing UWorld notes from the last year
-MTB 2 passes, underlining stuff I didn't know the first time and only reviewing those parts during the second pass
-NBME 4: 250, 6 days out

CK score: 267

I felt that the most helpful things were:
1. Doing well in clerkships- I went in to each rotation with the attitude of studying for each one like I was planning on going into the specialty. The majority of my knowledge came from the other 11 months of the year, not surprisingly. I only felt like my 3 weeks of prep helped on maybe 20-30 questions and was just icing on the cake.
2. I read SUM 1.5x and did UWorld during the year. Glad I did - when I missed questions, I took notes and reviewed them a few times during the year. Random question blocks done throughout the year helped to scare me into studying by pointing out how little I know and how much I've already forgotten.
3. 8 hours of sleep/night for several days before test day.
4. I have a Step 1 First Aid .pdf that I referenced several times during the year and during my study time. It's a huge help for quick review of basic physiology/pharmacology.

Took CK today, feels good to be done (in a headachy sort of way) 🙂 I used Uworld x1.5 with occasional reference to SUTM, tried MTB 2/3 but wasn't a fan. Took NBME 4 (2 weeks out, 277) and UWSA (0.5 weeks out, 800/265). Overall on the real deal I felt like I was missing more than I felt I was missing while taking Step 1, so I'm not sure how predictive my practice tests will be. I'll post again once I get scores.

Final CK score: >285 (don't want to get too specific and give away my secret identity, sorry 😳). I think overall the most important thing for me was getting the most out of third year (shelves all in low/mid to upper 90s), followed closely by UWorld. Obviously very happy!

Took the exam 7/16

Step 1 = 225
Uworld 1st pass = 68%
UWorld 2nd pass = 82% (roughly 80% done)
UWSA = 226

Real deal = 230

I had a feeling I didn't do as well as I thought I would but I'll take it. Trying to match neuro so I should be alright.

Good luck to those still taking it and congrats to all that passed!

2 Weeks ago : NBME - 6: 225

Yesterday: NBME - 4: 231

I'm taking the test in 2 weeks... and it would seem that I suck, and I mean SUCK at preventative medicine. Is there some way to learn this in that time frame, or is it a general lack of knowledge which plagues me? Almost 1/3 of my missed question have come from PM...

So just took the exam yesterday. Figured with all the help this board has given me, least I could do is give back.
First pass UWorld (including throughout the year while I was studying for shelves) = 64%.
Didn't do a full second pass, instead re-did the problem questions (ones I either missed or had marked b/c I wasn't 100% confident in my answer), ranging around 70-80% on most question sets.
When I was finishing my first pass of UWorld (probably aruond 500-700 IM questions) I did them on timed tutor with all subjects.
Second pass (for the review) was timed 44 question blocks with re-review at the end. I also took notes on any information within the question or the other answer choices that I thought I should know. Ended up being about 17-18 pages of typed one to two line notes.

Sources used:
UWorld (obviously)
MTB 2 (taking notes on anything I didn't already know, turned out to be about 25-30 pages of handwritten one to two liners)
MTB 3 NON-IM (every section besides IM, including derm, tox, etc. etc.; no notes taken here)
Top 200 Diagnostic Test Questions You Need to Know For Step 2 (Conrad Fischer Flashcards)

Step I - 224
School-sponsored mock Step 2 (4 blocks, without exact scoring, prior to dedicated 4 week studying period) - 220s
UWSA (3 weeks into studying, ~ 1 week before test): 245
Didn't take any NBMEs as I didn't want to be demoralized by a crappy score.

Test Day:
Usual waiting period, usual GED takers behind me clacking away on her keyboard like she was typing a book. Anyways, on to the actual test.
41-45 question blocks x 8.
Content wise I'm going to be a bit biased. Consider the fact there are 320+ questions, and that the ones I feel like there was more of was because they are not my strong points.
Things that were on it MORE than I expected:
Ophtho (where analyzing a fundoscopic image is key to diagnosis),
Pediatrics (both Neonate/Infantile AND middle-aged [10-15 w/o being solely GYN issues]),
OB/GYN,
Pulmonary,
Management/Pattern "Does this disease get cured completely or will it temporarily cure and then relapse?"

Things that were on it LESS than I expected:
Trauma (and Surgery),
Cardiovascular Dz,
Pure unadulterated Diagnosis (not "what is the next step in management", but "What is the most likely diagnosis")

Can't make a definitive comment about other ones.

Most frustrating portions of the test: I read the vignette and I know the diagnosis and the next step before I even read the answer choices. Get to the answer choices, and they have the 2nd through 5th step (and I don't remember exactly in what order those next 4 steps go in).
Also, standard things like you know the diagnosis, but they use some other term for it that you've never heard of before, so you have to use process of elimination on all the diagnoses you know to understand what it is (never knew what hematocolpos was until I took the exam and selected it as an answer choice).
Another thing - They had these ridiculous questions about how some nurse or physician makes some minor mistake (not procedural, but like failing to follow up on a lab) and the question asks what could be done in the future to make sure things don't happen again. Definitely thought there were 2 or 3 valid answers for each of those questions (only like 4-5 on the entire exam).

There were also times that you had an exceedingly clear clinical diagnosis, but they asked you what the next step in diagnosis would be. Sometimes they had the "no further diagnosis needed" option, but often times it was picking between one of the two things that would have anything to do with the original disease process at all.

A good amount of biostats, but as long as you know sensitivity/specificity/PPV/NPV and the definitions to all of those words, you'll do fine. Some of the "what's wrong with this study" stuff was a little tricky.
I had 2-3 drug adds (only 1 page each thankfully) and 2-3 abstracts with 2-3 questions per abstract. Not too bad. One of the drug adds dealt with an herbal supplement, which had it's own wack study conducted, and wasn't confirmed by the FDA. Not sure if I was just supposed to throw out the entire study when the patient asks if it is good for him.

Glad to be done and get on with my research year. Googled some of the questions I can remember that I wasn't sure on, and so far doing well in that category. The worst feeling in the world is when you're answering a 2-parter that has to be answered one step at a time, and you see you've missed the first part during the exam b/c the 2nd question went a different direction than what you were thinking.

Breaks - While studying I was routinely drinking/snacking on something, which is obviously super duper illegal during the actual test. I took a break after every single section for ~ 5 minutes, just to get a glass of water, some sips of coffee (I took 4 of those cappucino bottles you'd get from starbucks, and drank half of one after every section), a granola bar if I needed it. I ate a decent sized breakfast and didn't have an actual lunch (just sugary cappuccino and granola bars).

Glad to be done, waiting for my score now, and good luck to everyone.

PS - About 4-6 weeks for the score report to come back, right?

Sorry for the original long ass post. Seems extra to quote all of it now.

Anyways, score report came back, and I got a 247. While clearly not on par with what seems like 95% of those posting in SDN (285 wtf), I got a 224 on step 1 so this is definitely a sizeable improvement, and have to give a shout out to UWSA for being damn near perfect in guessing my Step 2 score.

In terms of the score report, only thing I wasn't above average on was OB/Perinatal stuff. Figures.

PM is straight out of UW. If you know the PM in that and the charts/tables you'll be good.

Took nbme 3 and ended up with 223. Took uwsa a few days later ended up with 247. Hoping for 240 on the real deal, you guys think I'm ready. From reading this thread it seems like uwsa is more accurate than the nbme's. Did uwsa significantly overestimate for anyone?
