Probably been discussed before, but can't find a recent thread....

I'm just curious about what scores people were getting on USMLE World, and then how you ended up doing on Step 2.

All you have to do is post two numbers...... 🙂

Thanks folks, and good luck with everything!!

Took it 6/20, got it back today. 269 (99) after a 223 on Step I. Pretty ecstatic. For me the formula was hard work throughout third year, doing well on shelves and hitting UW very hard. Good luck to everyone else.

Great score! What were your averages on UW?

Great score! What were your averages on UW?

68% on UW first time through all random and timed 46 q blocks. I did not read First Aid, Secrets or Crush. I read a few chapters in Step Up To Medicine. But mostly I just very faithfully read the explanations on UW.

I lucked out. I'm not the typical UW superfreak 270 person.

Is it possible that there are versions of step 2 Ck that are considerably more difficult than others? I can't understand how anyone could feel confident after completing the test I took today. I earned 230 on step 1. I had an overall average of 75% on Uworld = 91% among users. I redid questions ranging b/w 80-100% consistently; with most scores >90%. I am flustered to say the least. I never would have dreamed this test would be so challenging. I am applying to a competitive field, and am worried this is going to be a step in the wrong direction. Did others experience a similar phenomenon? It is kind of scary that I may have regressed by so much over one year although I worked extremely hard during third year!

I felt the same way you did after leaving the test. Had the same percentile on Uworld (75%) and got through 65% of it...thought step 2 CK was much worse than step 1 (got >260). I took it last week, and unlike everyone else, I only recognized maybe 5 questions from Uworld total on my exam. Where did you take your exam? Crossing my fingers!!

I don't remember my U World data and I used it for shelf exams throughout third year (so probably not accurate representation) and Step 2

NBME #3 - 620 (243), taken one week prior to exam
NBME #2 - 600 (239), taken one month prior to exam
NBME #4 - 560 (231), taken two weeks prior to exam

Took Exam June 6th
Step 2 - 268/99
Step 1 - 235/98

Are we the same person? I am bitter about my exam today, too! It left me exasperated. I constantly felt as though it was a huge shelf exam. There were not many Uworld questions repeated at all (maybe 1 or 2?). I just don't know why the USMLE would test this way, and I am curious as to where the questions came from. The questions on the whole were not those that can be studied from a review book, in my opinion; more of the kind of questions you answer with real clinical knowledge gathered from being an intern. Ironic, huh? Plus, the difficult nature of the questions in addition to the time crunch forced me to make stupid mistakes because I could not take a few extra seconds to think about the answer!

Good thing this board is anonymous. I wouldn't want anyone to know that I am a little sissy that gets worked up over a test that could determine the rest of my life 😎

Let me ease your minds.

I had three weeks to complete all Uworld questions and read Secrets. That's all I did. I finished with it 3 days before my exam and basically took those days off to relax. I averaged 62-63% overall, but my scores were all over the place up until the last question set, sometimes in the 70s, sometimes in the 50s. Usually in the 60s.

Anyway, just got the score back and it's: 257 on Step 2 CK.

Now, I want to make a point: The average for my test was 226, which is 8 points higher than Step 1. That's essentially 8 free points we all get to tack onto our scores. If you earned a 242 on step 1, which I did, you would get a 250 on Step 2 for the same performance.

Basically, all the people who take Step 2 at the end of 4th year who couldn't care less what their score is because they've already matched change the grading curve in a big way for all those who actually study and try to do well.
No offense, but people who crapped up step 1 do better on step 2 because there isn't the same competition (ie grading curve), not because they earned a much higher score. All the guys who got 260s on step 1 blow off step 2 late in the year and get 200s just to pass, bumping up everyone elses grade.

Just keep all that in mind and don't sweat it, you'll do fine if you want to.

I heard a rumor that the NBME #1 is too easy and doesn't accurately predict your score. I just took it and performed well on it. Now I am afraid that it is not an accurate marker...Can anyone attest to this?

That hasn't been my experience. For example, my friend took it and got a 247. He got a 260 on CK.

4 weeks is plenty of time. There are 4 NBMEs that are more predictive than the UWSSA, you may want to do one each week and worry about the percentages there. If you progress @ 10 points a week you'll hit 236 in the real thing.

I took off a month and just finished all of USMLEWorld questions, getting an overall of 52% right. I never really saw a trend of imporvement in more scores. They have been very sporatic rangingfrom 26% to 65%. Now I have less than 2 weeks. I'm going to take one the NBME's and see how that goes, but I think I need to push the test off further. I was hoping to take it early to help me for residency applications, I'm going for Ophtho.

I read all the explanations diligently, but I guess they just aren't committed to memory. I feel like my brain is full.

Would people recommend getting USMLE Step 2 Secrets now? or just keep going back through USMLEWorld questions?

word of warning , there are a number of things that are out of date in Secrets, and some work-up guidelines that don't always coincide with those found in UWorld or other sources.

on that note... Not to make anyone paranoid, but something bad is going to happen in the future--somewhere, on earth. Fair warning!

Okay so I just finished USMLEWorld. I have 4 days remaining until the exam. What do you think is a better last minute strategy:
1) Redo the World q's I got wrong
2) Start doing q's from Kaplan Qbank

Thanks in advance.

thats a easy one!!!
REDO the wrong ones

I finished all of USMLEWorld with 52% correct. I just took NBME 4 which predicted 196. I obviously am not studying effectively. What should I do? I have Step Up, NME book, First Aide and just ordered Secrets. I read the explanations for USMLEWorld diligently. I've been studying for 4 weeks pretty hard core. Advice?

i took nbme 4 not too long ago and scored around the same as polaristar. now i'm not sure whether to just take this test or push it back. i really do want to finish this beast, as i am getting sick of studying and not having a life. A score in the 190's on an nbme should at least get one to pass, right?

but does it really hurt one's chances to do worse on step 2 than on step 1? my step 1 wasn't all that glam to begin with, but just wondering. unlike polaris, i'm not shooting for ophth, but still, we all want to get into a good program.

🙁

Scores back from 7/1/09 today. So very nervous about this exam, just didn't feel comfortable coming out of it, b/c everyone seems to score better than step I, and I studied my butt off for Step I.

Used UW finished 55% or so, and had an average of 67%. I did do some blocks of missed questions every 10 blocks or so.

Step up to Medicine, Boards and Wards, First Aid for Step II CK were my sources. Primarily though Step up to Medicine and working hard on my rotations were beneficial.

MCAT - 28
Step I - 245/99
NBME 4 (2 weeks out) 245 predicted

Step II - 259/99 - unfreaking believable, did not expect this result, I'm going to go party now with my kiddos!

Good luck to all!

great job, soundman!

took the exam 7/1 as well. score back just after 11AM today.

i studied for 8 weeks during my last two rotations, psych and family. used UW as my main source, 46q untimed/tutor for the first month, 46q timed for the second month. basically i did 1 block of questions every night and then spent 3-4 hours going over explainations and writing notes in FA and Step Up To Medicine. i'd read my explainations during down time and double up on questions on the weekends. i thought UW was absolutely gold and FA was a very good resource if you add your own notes to it. most important for me, though, was working hard during my third year and studying diligently for the shelf exams. i screwed up step 1 (see below) so this was a make or break year for me and it paid off.

Stats
MCAT - 32
MD Student
1st/2nd year - mostly high pass, couple of honors thrown in there
Step 1 (first attempt) - 171 (simply was not prepared and didn't have it on test day)
Step 1 (re-take) - 206
3rd year
Surgery - shelf 71, pass
Peds - shelf 91, honors
Medicine - shelf 82, high pass
Psych - shelf 94, honors
Family - grade pending, likely honors
OB/GYN - grade pending, likely honors
UW - finished 91%, overall 68% (MedFriends calculated score 242), was averaging 68-74% over that last 10 or so blocks
UW Self Assessment 3 weeks out - 220

Step II - 242/99!!

needless to say, i'm pleased. and a little amazed at the accuracy of MedFriends, haha. hopefully i can be a lesson to those of you with sub-par step 1 scores that it's not the end of the world. work hard during your 3rd year, study like crazy for your shelf exams, and do as many UW questions as possible!

good luck to everyone!

Step 1 - 224/93
UW avg overall - around 58
UW avg right before exam - 65
NBME 1 taken 1 wk before step 2 - predicted 194 😱

Actual step 2 score: 226/93 (got back today, took the test 7/1)

Would have liked a little higher just for ego's sake, but definitely fine for my specialty and the programs I'm looking at.

Just wanted to post my score as proof positive that not everyone on SDN scores above a 240 😉

Maybe I'm jumping to conclusions, but I had a friend who took the exam on july 8th (in ny), and another on july 10th( in ny), and they got back their scores today & I took it on july 11th( in ny) and did not. Could it be that I'm supposed to get it back next wed regardless, or is the rumor true that if you did well your grades might be delayed? thanks

I don't know anything about the rumor, but I do know Saturday seems to be the beginning of the week to them, so I would think the EARLIEST you would get your scores would be this coming Wednesday. Maybe another week if you did so astronomically well it took them another week to calculate YOUR score 😉

hmm, yeah the thing is my friend got his back and it was 19 days and mine would be 18 days so it didn't make sense to me I guess- there are people on this thread that claim they've gotten it back by 1.5 weeks and those who have gotten it back in 5+ because they took it in june and it was delayed due to the week off of 4th of july

Yeah from what most people seem to confirm it's the 3rd wed after the test barring any holidays, and saturday is the start of a new week.

if its a third wed after a test, why is it that this person who took it only 1 day before me got his back? the 29th would be the third wed after my exam as well.

Dude, we just told you Saturday is likely the start of a new week according to NBME releases. That means your score should be back next wed.

Congrats on your score! My UW avg is 59% now with 76% complete, hoping for at least 230 so this def gives me hope 🙂 Damn that NBME would have freaking terrified me, that's why I'm not taking one, since I'm not changing my date anyhow regardless of outcome, it will only stress me out.

Here is my contribution.. first off I want to thank everyone for theirs.. it was extremely helpful and motivating during process

I will say that I am a very average US medical student... with shelf scores that are at best average

Step 1: 216
Step 2: 233

for step 2.. I read first aid all the way through once and then did all of usmle world.. with an average of 60%.. I started out hitting in the 50% and then by the end was consistently scoring 63%-73%. I definitely wanted to improve on step 1, so I took about 19 days to study for step 2 while doing a research elective.

Good luck to everyone else!

Got CK results today from 7/3 exam. Here's some of my stats:

Step I : 258
USMLE CK: 73% (did all questions, mostly random blocks of 20 spread out over 2 months during peds rotation, more heavily during last two weeks off to study for CK)
Read CK First Aid
Step II CK: 268 (yeah b!tches!!!)

Goin into anesthesia, just need to get some solid letters now and hopefully some tight programs will want me.

Got the score today....
Step 2 CK: >245 (report says "recent administrations" avg was 226, SD 23, therefore this corresponds to 82nd percentile)

Very happy with this score!

Preparation and practice results:
Total prep time: 2.5 weeks. I only used UWorld (+ Self-assessment), Step 2 Secrets (by Adam Brochert), and I took all the online NBME Self-assessment forms. UWorld was my MAIN studying tool, bread-and-butter and I was doing maybe 200-250 questions a day, reading ALL the explanations. I did not use FA, Kaplan, Step-Up, Crush, or any other of that stuff at all.

NBME Form 1: 233 (1.5 weeks before exam)
NBME Form 3: 220 (1 week before exam... !!!! WTH!? Shattered confidence...)
NBME Form 4: 252 (3 days before exam)

UWORLD QBank: 65-66% overall correct, 90% total bank used, one-time only, UNUSED and TIMED, with ALL RANDOM questions only mode.

Released items (USMLE Free-CD practice test): 40/38/39

I think the best way to prepare for this exam, in all honesty, is to do very well during your clerkships and learn the material cold then. During clerkships I mostly focused on Case Files and Blueprints to help study but did not use either of these during my final 2.5 weeks. All I did was UWorld, read explanations, did numerous practice tests, and read through Step 2 Secrets two times. Step 2 Secrets is all you need as a "refresher" if you are moderately strong from your clerkship background.

Our school gives shelf exams after each clerkship and my results on those were consistently around 75-78.

Good luck to all preparing for it! It IS a hard exam, don't let anyone fool you by saying it only takes X amount of time to prepare or that it was "easier" than Step 1 or something like that. Difficulty is on-par with UWorld... but the UWorld Self-assessment underpredicts by a fair margin. Use the official NBME self-tests to get a sense of where you are and the free released items are pretty similar in content, style, and difficulty.

Got the score back today.
250/99

I pretty much relied on USMLEworld for most of my studying. I did 100% questions and I think my final avg was a 64% (started in the mid 50's and by the end was averaging around 70-73%) All questions were timed 46 question blocks and randomized. I also used their self assessment about 1.5 wks prior to taking Step II, it predicted a 237.

I supplemented areas I felt weak on with first aid and step 2 secrets, but most of my time was spent doing questions over about 3.5 weeks.

Step 1 score was 247/99 so I guess for me my biggest predictor of my step 2 score was step 1.

Good luck to the rest of you waiting to take step 2 or to those of you waiting for your scores.

Took my test 7/1 and got the score yesterday. Figured I should post since I was on the site regularly looking at everyone else's results...Thanks to all who have posted!
Step2 - 247/99
UW - 64% correct, did 100% of questions mostly on timed mode
NBME form 1 - 2d before exam - 247
Used Crush and added notes while reviewing UW questions
Studied 3.5 weeks 6-8 hour days, took weekends off

Hey guys sorry if this is the wrong place to ask but I just did the USMLEWorld self assessment today and got 510/220 prediction (64.7% over the 4 blocks) 🙁. I am hoping for a 230+ and I am currently signed up for an Aug 8th test (bc of the delayed score report for those who are taking it after the 10th). Does anyone know if the score they predict is fairly accurate or if its too low or too high? I'm trying to decide if I should push back my exam a couple weeks. by the way, those are some awesome scores posted here...

Biggest aid for Step II for me was going through all the Uworld questions once, untimed 46q random blocks and then I read each section in Step up medicine and did the corresponding section on Uworld.
Also used: Secrets(quick review) Crush(borderline worthless other than peace of mind).
Studied 6 days but most importantly studied throughout the year:
Step II 248/99.

What do you guys suggest to do in terms of studying? I just started my FP rotation and have a bunch of electives/selectives prior to starting my core in December.

I subscribed a 1 year subscription to UWorld. I went through preventative medicine section w/o having read anything and got about 40%. I'm confused in terms of what I should be reading. Textbooks? Review books? I have on order Crush, Secrets, Deja Review, Boards/Wards Steps 2 and 3, and Step Up to Medicine but haven't received them yet. I went through 1 case in Swanson's FP review book (mainly Qs with explanations and summaries). I need advice regarding this, so for those who did well on this exam, please give me some detailed advice on how to study for this stuff while on rotations and then for boards, and doing well on Step 2. Thank you!

I studied for 9 days, using mostly UWorld and some MKSAP. Got through about 1300 UWorld questions. I did not study very hard throughout third year (and lemme tell ya, not studying makes for a VERY fun year!).

UWorld average: 51%
Step 2: 208/85

Good enough for the girls I date! 👍

Just got some UW question on a woman there for routine annual exam. The physician asks about orgasms and if she's had one (WTF?) and she says no after being described what it is. She has no complaints. The answer is "Suggest self-stimulation techniques". What. The. ****. She didn't go in there complaining about anorgasmia, worst question ever.

I just got this question yesterday -- I totally agree with you. My first thought was, "Are these people serious?"

I took the exam recently...I have been reading these posts for a while to help me study, so I thought I'd share my strategies.
Studied for 4 weeks, about 6 hours a day.
Books: First Aid for Step 2 CK, Step 2 Secrets
USMLEWorld: 90% finished, always did sets of 40 or so on tutor mode, subject-specific depending on what I was studying that day or what I felt weak on...finished with overall 72% correct. One thing I always did was take notes on questions I got wrong, and I really took my time with the qbank to suck every bit of info out of it that I could. There were numerous questions on the exam straight out of usmleworld.

NBME #2 - 800 (>268) timed 2 days before I took the exam.

that's it! I didn't do fabulously well on Step 1, so I am trying to make up for it. I'll post when I receive my scores!

Just as above, I have been reading these posts and figured I should give a little something back- will post a score when it comes.

Started with reading FA cover to cover to get back in the swing of things.
Did 95% of UWorld Qbank- hit 63.9% with 46 random, timed questions. Tried to do 5 daily and review the 5 from the day before (taking notes which I read over x3)- I also read Crush (cover to cover) when my brain refused to take/read more questions.

Took the UWorld self assessment and was guesstimated at a 243 (2 weeks before the exam).

Did the free 150 Qs.

Didn't Take an NBME practice test, but wish I would have to get a better idea of what I needed to spend time on.

Thanks to all who have previously posted as I used this as a rough guide when I studied. Hope it works:xf:

Hey all, got my score back today, so I thought I'd share what I did, since this thread has been so helpful.

First my stats:
MCAT: 31 (10P, 11V, 10B)
Step I: 200
Shelf Scores (Raw): Family 61, Peds 68, IM 76, OB/GYN 79, Psych 81, Surgery 76

Originally, I intended to take 4 full weeks to study for Step 2 CK, but I moved my exam up a week, because I was doing well on my practice NBME self assessments. I gave myself a 2 day break after my last shelf and studied at least 8 hours a day. I used the USMLE World on tutor mode throughout 3rd year for my shelf exams and ended up in the 60-68% range with around 85% completed. For Step 2 CK prep I redid USMLE world in timed mode, starting slowly with 1-2 blocks of 46 questions a day. A week in, I made sure I did at least 4 blocks a day. I finished with an overall percentage of 73%. It took me a little over 2 weeks to complete USMLE World and afterwards I just redid everything I got wrong. I also studied from Step Up to Medicine, Step 2 CK Secrets and the notes/outlines that I took from 3rd year.

My NBMEs:
3 weeks out - NBME 1: 600 (239)
2 weeks out - NBME 2: 650 (252)
2 days out - NBME 4: 630 (245)

Test day was on July 15th. I took breaks as follows: after block 1, I took 5 minutes to clear my head, after block 2 I took a 10-15 min break with a banana and protein bar with water. I repeated this for the rest of my test blocks, except I took an extended 30 min after block 4. Leaving the test I felt ok. I thought I did as well as I did on my practice tests, which was comforting, because I would have been happy with any of the scores that fell in that area. There was a little random Step 1 stuff and one of the video questions was insane, but overall I had thought my studying prepared me very well.

So, exactly 3 weeks later, I got my test score back.

Step 2 CK: 262 (99) Mean: 226, SD: 23

So yeah, I'm pretty damn happy right now. Obviously, I screwed the pooch with my Step 1 score, but I'm glad I was able to perform so well on Step 2. At least if you average both of them I'm still above the mean 😛 I really can't recommend USMLE World and Step Up to Medicine enough, that plus working hard during 3rd year was really key. Secrets was helpful for going over the basic stuff you may have forgotten. Again, thanks everyone who posted in this thread, it was very helpful! I'm gonna do a backflip now! Hooray!

Quick question to the above poster, how do you know your "raw scores" on the shelf exams? From what I understand the schools send them off to the NBME, who then returns normalized scores for each test taker. Does your school provide you with both raw scores and normed scores? If so, how close are they?

So I took about 3 weeks to study for the test after finishing my peds rotation. I did fairly well on my shelf exams throughout the year getting usually above 80-90 percentiles on most of them so I think the key is doing well in 3rd year. My studying pretty much consisted of doing UWorld for the entire day in 20-40 question blocks and then going over and writing the explanations in Crush Step 2. I finished all the questions in the 3 weeks and then spent the last couple of days going through crush step. I supplemented some of the studying with notes that I made in some of the rotations. Didn't do any practice tests. Since I did okay on step 1 and am going into IM, i didn't feel the pressure to ace this test but I still did a bit of studying cause i didn't want to screw myself over.

Leaving the exam, I thought it was definately easier than Step 1 but I felt that there were a lot more questions where i couldn't decide between 2 answers. I remember alot of psychiatry being on my test I guess because I couldn't really answer them too well. Definately some step 1 stuff thrown in like type 1 glycogen storage disease and where dorsal root ganglion cells are derived from. Had a couple of peds developmental questions which I'm pretty sure I missed.

Step 1 248
step 2 254

Now back to my subI

Hello everyone...got my score back today...275! I was pretty worried about this exam being since I felt this exam was much more difficult than step 1...but apparently not. I did well 3rd year with shelves ranging in the 80's and two in the 90's. Used USMLEWORLD (got through about 70% with an average of 75% all unused questions) and occasionally supplemented with Kaplan notes. I found First Aid to be next to useless. Step 2 secrets and Crush were ok, but i didn't find them to be absolutely essential. I would use them if you have extra time before the exam and need a quick refreshment. Good luck everyone! And if you have any questions shoot me a PM.
