To international students studying here in Aus... I'm interested in this USMLE Step 1 thing I keep reading about on SDN.

When do you guys plan on taking it?
How long will you study for it?
Where do you go to take it?
How much does it cost?
How long is the exam?
How long do you have to wait for your result?
Will a good score allow you to achieve your specialist goals back home?

I really don't want to go over whether med school here will be adequate preperation though, I think that's been done to death here.

Thanks

Sorry to be short, but midyear exams are fast approaching...

End of year 3 likely.

Starting after midyear break (year 2).

Where do you go to take it?
Sydney, will take via computer (I think syndey is the only place in Oz to take it).

[skipped some questions I dunno...]

Depends. For me, yeah, since i'll do FP or psych. Generally, you'll need to do a bit better than a US grad for any particular specialty, for specialties competitive up to about surg. For more competitive specialties, it becomes increasingly difficult to nearly impossible. Miklos has an interesting table he's made from res stats to help gauge your chances as an IMG:
