Hello,

I was wondering if anyone out there knew more about the pre-requisite work load at USN. According to their website they require only 10 classes which equals a minimum of 32 semester hours, however the website also states, "In order to be eligible for admission to the Pharm.D. program, applicants must:
have completed a minimum of 60 semester credit hours (90 quarter hours) of pre-pharmacy study in an accredited college or university in the United States.
So I am wondering if other classes are necessary, other than the 10 specifically outlined, in order to be accepted to this university.

thanks

You need those 10 classes as prerequisites and any other classes to get to 60 semester credit hours. I guess you could take all easy classes like theater and basket weaving but some of the prerequisites require taking other classes to take the prerequisite if that makes sense. In most colleges you need to take Biology I and II to take Microbiology and Anatomy and Physiology I and II. I don't know if USN will look at what other classes you took to get to 60 credit hours and how that will affect your chances of getting in. I'd email Dr. DeYoung and ask if they just look at GPA or take into consideration the electives you took. If they only look at GPA, which I think they do, I'd take the easiest classes to boost your GPA when taking electives. But email Dr. DeYoung to confirm this.

Also the 10 classes would most likely be more than 32 credit hours. The prerequisites I took added up like this in semester hours:
Chem 1 – 4
Chem 2 – 4
A&P 1- 4
A&P 2- 4
Micro – 4
Calc – 4
Organic 1 – 5
Organic 2 – 5
Speech – 3
English – 3

That’s 40 semester hours. I also took Bio 1&2 (4 semester hours each) = 48 semester hours

So it’s possible to only have 12 semester hours left over which is only 3 or 4 classes. I also took Stats and Physics which was another 7 semester hours (55 semester hours). I already had a bachelor’s degree so I already had 128 semester hours to begin with. What I’d recommend is taking other classes that are prerequisites for other Pharm D programs (that aren't prerequisites for USN) so you can apply to other schools besides USN to increase your chances of being accepted into a PharmD program
