Hello All

First let me apologize for starting a another thread about this vs that topic since I know many people hate it. But I really need some input from you guys on this decision. I am international student with acceptance to both of these schools.

USN:

The staff was really friendly. They gave me such a good vibe and it seems like they are planing to have a program that is based on helping one another and real focus on students. I feel like it is good fit for me but the fact that they are not accredited yet worries me abit. I am both excited to be a in the class that is starting fresh with no boundaries and also little worried about being in a pilot class. Also, I am doing some research to see if I can even get funding from Canadian banks for no accredited school.

NYU:
Big school with ton of history. The building is nothing to write home about and Manhattan is expensive BUT they seem like they have it all figured out. It will be big class size, probably less one on one with the Profs and alot tougher 1st and 2nd year. However again, from what they told us, they get you ready and they challenge you and I love that.I really like that I know if I work hard, I am being pushed hard enough that I will pass the board exams and will be successful at the end.

So give me your input, your experiences, what else you looked into when you made your choices and ...

Again, Thank you very much for your help.

Personally I would choose NYU. My brother in law went to dental school there and absolutely loved it. It is expensive but you cannot beat living in New York. It is an amazing state with so much history and things to do. The school it self is old but the quality of education you get makes up for it. I got accepted to USN, NYU and Colorado. I have been deciding between NYU and Colorado and leaning more towards NYU. Hope to see you there! USN will be a great school but not right off the bat..

Thanks Scott for your input. You are correct in the quality of the education that NYU can offer. I too, noticed that. However, the class size 230 worries me abit.

On the other hand, the class of 53 seems quite intriging. Right now, I am more inclined toward NYU but my heart wants USN since they were so nice there.

NYU. Established>Everything else. You really want to go to a school that has no history (although I'm sure they will be successful) over one that you KNOW produces competent and successful dentist+has research+has patient pool?

Really? Would you really put down 200-300k on that risk?

I think you need to look at the cost of the two schools. I know that South Jordan and the surrounding areas are very cheap to live in and pretty safe. USN's tuition is high, but I believe NYU's is pretty high as well. Plus, living in NYC is ridiculously expensive, and it's definitely a lot less safe than Utah.

That said, NYU has been around for a really long time and has produced thousands of dentists, while USN is just starting. I have heard that NYU tends to fail some students each year, but in USN's small class size of 53, I really doubt you would fail or get lost in the mix.

At the end, I'm not knocking NYU or promoting USN. If it were my decision, I think I would lean toward USN for a smaller class size and location especially if your heart is pushing you that way based on your experience there.

NYC is way safe. I have felt safe here especially at the odd hours (because there are always people walking around) more so than many other small cities/suberbs . Safest big city!😀

I dont know much about NYU other than I haven't heard a thing from them. At the orientation at USN, they said that students will only do one class at a time and they did seem really focused on helping the students and focusing on helping them succeed. If you learn better by doing 4-5 classes at a time, maybe USN is not for you. USN also will not have finals, at least that is what they said in the orientation.
Personally, I would not be worried at all about being accredited. The odds of them not getting accredited are slim to none. At the orientation they said that they have looked closely at schools that have had problems with accreditation. Most of them have worked on accrediting committees themselves. From what I have heard, it costs roughly 50 million to get a dental school up and running. Investors and other people for a private school like USN would never dump that much money into something if they didn't figure it would get accredited. To me, it would be a non-issue.
The only thing I would be concerned about with USN is how they are going to do clinicals. Everything there will be brand new and modern. They said that for this first year they weren't going to accept as many people as they will next year mostly because they aren't sure how clinicals are going to go and how hard it might be to get patients.

.... I have heard that NYU tends to fail some students each year...

I am a D3 at NYU. This rumor is like the rumor that dentist have the highest suicide rate, completely False but will never go way. Its true that each year a few people drop out but it mostly for personal problems. I only know of one person in my class having to repeat a year.

If you think it out logically, each student they fail is a 60K lost in revenue. NYU makes sure every student passes, you get emails for the academic director after the first exam if you failed it and they'll stay on you to make sure you pass the class.
