have you SEEN the new match list for chicago med? insane

did anyone else notice that u. colorado costs $70,000 a year? that is more thousands than i, personally, could shake a stick at.

That's gotta be an infringement on some type of copyright.

yeah, but THANKS entropy!

hey entropy2 (or anyone else), can you also list out the schools that are ranked 54-58 for primary care?

thanks entropy, i was looking for exactly this.

you are a hero.

arent those the rankings for research not primary care? if youve got 50-62 of primary care..that would be awesome...i can see 1-50 on their website so you dont have to spend all your time typing it if you want. THANKS!

Hey look, MUSC is ranked. I never knew that. I thought they were ranked last year in primary care but the rankings got all screwy this year.

heh

can anyone explain why the list only goes to 62? I thought there were something like 120 med schools in America. is it because they don't post the lower rankings? or are some schools just excluded from the rankings?

sorry if this has been answered in another thread.

some schools dont send their stuff in for the rankings...

i think on their web site, it says they had information on 123 of the 124 schools. 62 being half of 124, i'm assuming they just only rank the top 50%. Once you're in the bottom 50%, it really doesn't matter where i guess (assuming you actually believe being in the top 50% matters...which i wouldn't really put much stock in either as these rankings seem absurd to start with)

Colorado is not more expensive. You pay a huge lump up front if you are out of state for the first year. Then you become a resident and pay the cheap rates. My understanding for most other schools is that you pay the non-resident fee for four years. It all evens out.

Anyone not care about rankings at all, or is it just me?

I did not consider rankings one bit when choosing where to apply. This is the first time I've seen any of this.

yeah, i really don't care about rankings at all. it's far to arbitrary to actually have any relevance. match lists were relevant to me when choosing where to apply...usnews is kinda pointless really.

here's an interesting report on the value of US News rankings.

http://epaa.asu.edu/epaa/v10n16/

scroll down to table 15 and it'll go into detail about the various elements and their respective weights that make up the rankings. The heaviest weight for ranking category is reputation, and the next heaviest is total dollars of NIH funding. Student selectivity and faculty/student ratio are also factors.

i agree that US News leaves much to be desired. but the fact is a lot of people use the rankings as a starting point in comparing schools. I have all sorts of subjective criteria when I'm comparing, like residency matching, student life, location, curriculum, grading system, student testimonials, etc., but i haven't the time nor the inclination to put together a robust, strictly quantitative way of comparing such a large number of schools.

now, I may not entirely agree with how much one category is weighed versus the others or I may want to include another category or two, but now i'm talking about improving something that has already shown at least some worth- starting a discussion about what points i should be evaluating in the med schools i'm looking into

that list is stupid.

no one would ever go to the top 4 over UCSF, Stanford or UCLA, unless they were from Boston, STL or Penn and had to be near home.

How could you pass up living in LA or SF and not dealing with crappy winter weather.

You are kidding right? I am underwhelmed...Harvard Penn Wash U.. Or is it that you are from the left coast?

Good match list but also think about the large size of the class.
Almost twice as big as some.

can someone explain why the RFUs match list is so nice..filled with superstars...this is def. surprising as I wasn't expecting with looking at their avg gpa/mcat... also is this match list an anomaly or does it follow suit every year...

It's pretty much like this every year. Here's 2004:

http://66.99.255.20/students/class/2004/matchlist.htm

There're a few reasons as to why I think the match is so good. First, there's A-F grading here. I don't care what anybody says, there's a world of difference between students' attitudes in a P/F system vs A-F. We just finished exams, and more often than once I've told myself that if I were after the B, or merely passing the class with a C, then I'd have been done studying weeks ago. If this school were P/F then I know I'd stop studying as soon as I was sure of the Pass.

Secondly, we've got an intense second year curriculum. And the second year faculty is good. Arthur Schneider, who wrote the BRS Pathology book, is the head of the Path department. So students end up very well versed in Pathology. And Step 1 loaded with it. Our Step 1 scores are well above national average.

And thirdly, I think the students here feel a need to redeem themselves. At least, I can say that from personal experience. I didn't rock college like I know I could have, and I barely got in to med school. I feel like I need to make up for the fact that I go to a 'safety school.' I'm sure not everyone feels this way, but I certainly do.

Anyway, I'll try and dig up past match lists and post them on this thread as I find them.

Slow down big fella... For those who are interested I am currently an M4 and this years list will be at least as impressive...

We should have a handful of NeuroSurg about 5-7 Ophtho, 2-3 Derm, 1-2 Plastics combined, and of course our standard 20 or so into EM. Also a decent number into Rads although I must admit I dont know of anyone interested in Rad Onc.

I dont know about the classes behind me but there arent a ton of gunners in my class, although there are some, I imagine like other med schools. Most impressive from last yr was matching ENT at Yale, screw neurosurg at Brown.. Freaking ENT at YALE

One other thing 3 or 4 yrs ago one of the students had the top Step 1 score in the country.. Overall our Step 1 average is above the national Allopathic average.

the list does not consider such things as the weather, getting laid, or happiness or does it?

LA you could pass up if you don't like breathing air you can see, meeting >50 member gang riots, or took french instead of spanish in high school. SF is easy, if you're homophobic.

IMO - the only ranking that should hold weight in an applicant's mind is an internal ranking of which schools most closely serve the specific interests of the applicant. It is simply impossible to objectify a medical school as "better" or "worse" in some absolute sense, since such terms are inherently subjective terms, changing depending on who is judging.

I just think it is impossible to quantify a linear ranking of schools, or even a grouped ranking (top tier, 2nd tier, 3d tier), because each school offers a unique combination of factors that each individual will undoubtedly weight differently.

Anyway, just thought I'd post what I thought about the US news issue to add to the marketplace of ideas.

Good luck to everyone in this application process!

i like how everyone not from california says the air is polluted here and so on. actually, sf, sd, irvine, and davis are all in relatively clean areas in terms of air quality. and ucla is in westwood, one of the nicest areas in la. usc (keck) is the school that would be the closest to the negative stereotype of la.
