OK folks so I have received my unconditional acceptance, gotten and returned my packet to Ms Taylor and I am now sitting in Limbo. I wouldn't be too worried about things, except that I am taking off tonight and won't be back in town until around June 8th (Heading to Buffalo to see my brothers graduate, then to MD to look for housing and a job for the wifey, then back to Buffalo to spend a couple days with family, then back to Denver in time to take off for OBC - all driving 😀 )

So far, I have not received my orders in the mail. Nor have I gotten any information regarding getting sworn in (someone said in another thread that you had to be sworn in roughly 10 days before OBC). Can someone please explain to me how this process works from the point that I am currently at. And any info on things that I may have overlooked/not questioned.

If my paper orders aren't here today, can I have them emailed to me? Do I have to get sworn in relatively quickly, and if so, how would I go about it being in my situation? Is there anything else that will be sent to me that is time sensitive and has to be sent back? I just haven't been able to get any solid answers yet, so I figured I'd ask those who have gone/are going through the process.

Thanks for helping my insanity,
JOE

Hello To Tag along to Joe's question,

I was also wondering if people knew when we had to be in bethesda by. Is there orientation to med school 1 or 2 weeks prior? (OBC may be enough but was wondering b/c mostly other schools have them around then)

2nd I'm guessing the 1st day of class is around Aug 22 or so? Is that true?

I'm looking at the student orientation guide as we speak and it says that inprocessing is 8 Aug to 12 Aug then followed by orientation the next week. Classes start the 22nd.

Yep, you get two weeks of orientation prior to classes starting. The first week is orientation to the brigade and the second is orientation to the classes. Basically talks for a bunch of hours each day. You may also have some PT sessions a couple times. Basically this is a good time to meet your classmates, go out, and have a good time before the classes start. It also allows you to get somewhat settled in before classes start. But the days are long and boring.

To the OP, as far as getting sworn in, it's not a big deal if you don't get it done before you get to OBC. There were several people last year who were sworn in the first day we reported to Ft. Sam. However, I would be concerned about not having your orders before you begin your nomad ways. If there is some problem with your orders (like getting lost in the mail), you might have some problems reporting to OBC on time. I would suggest you have somebody at your house check your mail to be sure your orders arrive.

Joe,
When you went to interview at USUHS, they gave you a sheet that was labled, "Military Points of Contact" for each service + USUHS. I emailed the Navy guy in this list, and he emailed me my orders as soon as he wrote them. The USUHS person told me that she recived a copy of the orders and was sending my commissioning papers, which will arrive any day now. I was told to take the comissioning papers to my local Navy base/instilation and get sworn in + get all the other admin stuff set up. So right now I am sort of in limbo myself...I have an emailed copy of my orders and no comisssioning papers. But I expect to get this all taken care of by the beginning of June. I will let you know if what happens as it does. First I would look up the Army point of contact, this person is not at USUHS (I don't think). If you do not have this name/number let me know and I will give it to you.

Hey Joe,
This is for your housing info incase it helps. I stopped by the campus yesterday b/c I was in town and I found out that there are quite alot of postings in the lounge area where USUHS grads and students are renting out their houses. I guess the price the quality of the place depended on the area. Looks like alot of people live i n silver springs. (Not the best metro accessible area but close by distance. (The metro runs in a U and the school and silver spring are kinda of near the opposite ends of the U)
And I hear alot of married couples live up north near shady grove/german town/ and gaithersberg and single poele live near rockville closer to the school.

For housing information you can also call the student affairs office. One of the MS2's put together a listing of a bunch of different places different people live and what they do/don't like about it with prices etc. It's a computer file so they can email it to you. The student affairs office should have a copy they can get to you, if not try the company commander's office.

thanks back row. The student affairs people refered me to the naval housing people and they said they give out the files they have via e-mail.

and aubrey, can I get the contact for the army guy?

Thanks

No problem, I'm thinking they didn't give you the student made file though so i'll try to attach it here for everyone's enjoyment. Please realize the comments are those of the individuals who added them and not the school or anyone else (just a disclaimer).

Thank you all! This is quite helpful!

Thanks for the replies folks.

Aubrey, I have been in email contact with Louise Taylor (the army contact person) regarding my orders. She just sent me info on the DA Form 71 and told me about getting sworn in. I have asked her to send me an email when she mails out my orders and also asked if she could email me a copy as well. I'll be down at the school this week, so if I don't hear anything by then, maybe I'll see if I can stir up some stuff down that way.

Here's hoping I get my orders in time to report to OBC - I quit my job 2 days ago 😉

Hello all - congrats to everyone going to USUHS!. I will hopefully be joining you (Army) but somehow some of my clearance paperwork got lost and is holding up my unconditional acceptance. I was just told they will process me anyway but does anyone have experience with this in terms of how fast that will happen, i.e., will I likely make to Ft. Sam this time around??

With regards to OBC, does anyone know what sort of PT we will doing? I wouldn't mind augmenting my current workout a bit to get better prepped for working out in the San Antonio sun *LOL*

One other question - with regards to housing, has anyone had experience finding a decent place this close to the school year beginning? Any advice on how many days one should be prepared to search?

Hope to meet everyone soon!

When going to USUHS, be sure that you have a point of contact because if your name isn't at the gate, you're not getting in without your military ID.

if we decide not to attend USUHS after OIS or basic training, what happens? Thanx !
