UT Houston Public Health-- Response/Chances?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I'm also PhD Epi... I wonder if this is a glitch? Especially since thereal19 you sent your GRES directly and through SOPHAS.

I am not sure, but I applied for the MPH program and happened to get the same thing that my official GRE scores need to be sent and need to contact office of academic affairs...I really don't know whether I will need to send it again coz even on inquiring them via emails I am getting the usual answers of sending the scores to SOPHAS code 4479. I am confused....

So I called Ms. Carter in admissions and she said that there is a glitch in the system and that they are trying to fix it right now. She said that as long as SOPHAS has the GRE score report then they should have it and we should not worry about an incomplete application as stated in the myuth link.

She said it will be about 4-6 weeks before admission decisions are released...I am not sure if that was for my particular department or she was referencing all departments.

Good luck!

Thanks for the heads up! I figured that was what was going on. But 4-6 more weeks to wait...geez. Folks have already gotten acceptances. I guess I'll just sit here and be patient.

I always take admissions time frames with a grain of salt. I'm thinking probably another week or two (let's hope). 😉

Hey guys,
I am an MPH-Community Health student at UT Houston. I wanted to let y'all know about the Certificate option. https://sph.uth.tmc.edu/academics/graduate-certificate-programs/ I wasn't sure about the MPH, so I did the Certificate first, which consists of the first 5 core classes for the MPH. They are all transferable. The cost is the same. I made As in all of my classes, and then applied for the MPH. I am sure that helped admissions see that I was capable of the work required for the graduate program. I liked how I was able to take most of the classes online. I took a class on campus last spring. It was great! We met once a week. I had 3 professors: 1 in Houston, 1 in Austin, and 1 in Brownsville. They were all top professionals in their areas of interest. We met once a week in the evening for 3 hours. I like how many of the classes can fit your schedule in case you have other things in life going on. This semester, I am finishing up my 5th core class. In the fall, I hope to go full time. There really do seem to be a lot of opportunities. I also learned in the materials from orientation that once you are in a the Masters program it is possible to switch to a PhD program.

Best of luck!

Stats:

Quant: 790
Verbal: 650
Writing: 5

Hi everyone,
I needed some guidance and advice regarding whom should I contact if I need to send an updated resume for the MPH program Epi concentration. I am really clueless and confused, I have emailed the Admissions many times but haven't got a reply from anyone regarding it and the other doubt was whether UT actually accepts any updated resume or not..?
Thanks in advance

My suggestion is to call Tiaresa Carter instead of emailing. That's the only way I have been able to get a response from their admissions dept.

Thank you enox0485,
I called her, initially she told me it was not possible but then later she told me to contact student affairs and the Epi coordinator , ever since then I am trying to call and have emailed both of them , but nobody is responding . I don't know who else I can contact other than them....🙁

For those whom have already been admitted, were you informed on your admissions letter whether you got scholarship funding?

@ Regal-- It's all about persistence in my opinion. I called about three times before I got through to Tiaresa, so if you're trying to get to an admissions coordinator keep at it. 🙂

I received notification of my admission to the MPH community health practice program last week. I haven't heard anything more from them, besides getting UTH login access. Congrats to those who got in!

t0426--When was your SOPHAS mailed? Was there any mention of scholarships in your acceptance email?

I don't understand how my scores could be missing because in addition to SOPHAS, I also sent them directly when I took the GRE in December...every other school got them!

Hi,

Even I sent the scores early. But the portal says my GRE score is yet to receive. So I forwarded the scores from ETS on Tuesday. Today i logged in and found that they have updated the scores. I am sure that ETS will not sent the scores in 24hours. So all you guys can wait for few days and check whats happening i guess instead of wasting extra money.

i received a confirmation e-mail for my application on tuesday, 2/27, and i just received an e-mail saying my application has been reviewed and i may check the status. and i got rejected... definitely not a good way to start the weekend. boooo... 🙁

Wow you got a reply within 1 week? What concentration did you apply for might I ask?

yeah, i was really surprised how fast the application was reviewed. i applied for environmental health sciences in industrial hygiene.

I'm sorry to hear that Roger0770, was this one of your top choices?

UT Houston and Tulane are my top choices and right now UT Houston is taking forever. I just only received the "your application has been submitted" e-mail although SOPHAS mailed it out in Jan. I don't know if that messes up my scholarship opportunities.

From what I have read on prior threads on SDN UT Houston's scholarship deadline of 2/1 is based on the SOPHAS submission date not the date it was mailed/received. The whole "mailing" aspect of SOPHAS doesn't tell the whole story and is kind of misleading. The schools receive an electronic version of you application as soon as you submit and SOPHAS just mails them a printed version for the school's records. I know this because Texas A&M, Pitt and Emory gave me confirmation emails before the applications were officially mailed out by SOPHAS. So if you submitted in January UT Houston would have gotten it before the scholarship deadline. I wouldn't be discouraged about the confirmation email. I submitted in the beginning of January and only got the confirmation email after I called them to ask about it.

t0426--When was your SOPHAS mailed? Was there any mention of scholarships in your acceptance email?

SOPHAS was mailed 01/24. There wasn't any mention of scholarships, but I'm hoping to hear something about that soon. I emailed Tiaresa Carter to confirm, but didn't hear back. Hoping it wasn't a glitch!

Check your SOPHAS under "School Designations" in the area where you attached the statement of purpose and questionnaires for your prospective schools. Scroll down to the University of Texas. Under the "type" column it should say "scholarship consideration". That's how you know if you applied within the scholarship consideration application cycle. I also wouldn't be overly concerned if you didn't get a reply from the admissions office. I see a common theme in this thread of that happening to just about everybody. 😎

Roger,

Sorry to hear about your UT Houston app. I also received the "confirmation email" 2/27, but nothing else besides the login information. The super-quick admissions decision almost sounds like a glitch. When was your SOPHAS mailed? Would you mind sharing your stats with us?

Thanks!

looking back at the SOPHAS application, i now don't think it's a glitch. i left all 3 writing samples blank in the "additional questions" section for i thought they weren't going to make a difference because they are optional...

i don't have great stats either. i majored in biochem in college, average gpa and gre scores. however, ALL three of my letters of rec are very very strong, which is why i think i got into the other schools. i can share the info in more details via pm if you're interested, don't want to embarrassed myself to the world.

I was accepted today to the MPH program with a concentration in Health Services Organization. I had an extremely quick response time given my SOPHAS wasn't mailed until 2/22/12.

That scares me...mine was mailed before that. :scared:

Mine was posted in the beginning of January and my email didn't even have a status link to check on my status. I applied Healthcare management. Guess it shouldn't be too much longer considering health services organization is in my division. 🙄

Still no one from the department of Epi. Hmm.

I should also add I E-Submitted on 12/8/11, Sophas mailed out on 1/11/12. Received email confirmation stating the decision would be made in 3-4 weeks on 1/18/12. I suppose patience.

It was my pleasure Enox! You can contact me if you need any more information/help when you get accepted.

Firstly Thank you for the comprehensive review of the place and the program.

I have applied to the EPi track this year on Feb 14th. I received an email stating my process is complete. I also received an email with the username and password for the application portal.

My doubt is about the the in-state and out-of-state tuition. I have applied after the scholarship deadline. Suppose, I get a job in one of the centers you have mentioned, will I be eligible for in-state tuition? What are the prospects of residency in Houston?

Hmm, I strangely did not get an email with a username and pass for an application.

Ty

I heard from them today. SOPHAS mailed my app in late January and I got a confirmation that app was received on 2/27 followed by the log in info for my UTH. I am a PhD epi applicant so I don't know if the process is different for MPHers

Bravia you and I are pretty much in identical situations. I got no username or password for my UTH and have been straight chilling since the beginning of January.

I e-submitted on SOHPAS Jan. 9th and they mailed it out Feb. 14th. I didn't get a confirmation e-mail or the myUTH username and password until March 1st. Still haven't heard anything regarding a decision although I have to assume that they have only had my app since 3/1. (I applied for MS Epi by the way)

I'm keeping my fingers crossed, UT Houston is the only place I applied! The wait is totally driving me nuts 🙁

I actually have a myUTH login since I'm in the certification program.

Where are you able to check your status of your app on myUTH might I ask?

On the left hand side, there's a box that says self service, under that it says Student Admission and then Admissions Status. Clicking on Admissions Status sends me to a page that has symbols telling if your application is complete and whether you are accepted or rejected. Not sure if it is different for you since you are already a student there though, but this is what I have on mine.

@enox0485 I received my application and login details on 2/28 and then got an email notifying me to check my admission status on March 3rd.

I am keeping my fingers crossed too, cause I really want to go to UT

THis is the link I followed for my UTH account.

kindly forget the dots and enter it all together.. I was not sure of the forum rules if it allowed posting links of the websites...

Thanks mphresidency! Did they send you a username and password with your email or is there a way of setting it up yourself? I appreciate the help! 😀

Wowsers the admissions process seems like a hot mess! I submitted my SOPHAS back in October, SOPHAS sent it out November, I didn't get accepted until February.... and I still have no idea what this coveted email with username and password is!

Maybe different departments (and degree programs) are choosing to use UTLink or myUTH or whatever it is to notify applicants, while other departments/ degree programs aren't? I was accepted into the MPH program for Health Services Organization.

So no one from Epi has heard back yet?

They themselves sent it to me in two separate mails...

Haha that's what I thought AND the wait continues 😉

@Bravia Well I heard back few days ago...

I just got into the MPH program for Environmental & Occupational Health also. Is there anyone currently in this program who can give more information on it?

This is getting silly. If I don't hear back by this Friday I'll most likely give a little call again and see whats up.

Anyone got an update?
