UT Memphis Class of 2014

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Im a D1 here at loma linda, but last year I interviewed at memphis. I was a tenn resident. I did not get in, and dont care bc Im loving loma linda, but memphis (dr coleman) pretty much blatantly admitted to me that after granted an interview, they only care about gpa.

so my advice, if you gpa is not 3.6 - 4.0, look for other schools. he even admitted to me that they did not really care about, dat score, interview, lor's, EC activities... Just wanted to share my really bad application process with memphis. (look at last years thread if you want to see how dr coleman told me i was accepted, and then 3 minutes later told me there was someone else with my exact name and I was not accepted...)

yeah needa20 is probably right because whenever I would call and ask a question about lor's, EC activities, the essay, etc he would either disregard the question completely and ask what my science GPA was or tell me straight up that they didn't take that particular aspect of the application into consideration (lor's, for example).

Oh and the interview is useless- mine lasted 5 minutes

If you haven't received an acceptance letter then you are either waitlisted or rejected (they sent out final acceptance letters last week). They will probably send out waitlist letters within a week or so. I've not received a letter yet.. it's time to start preppin for DATs again *sigh..

Dang.. How did you find out? Oh well I guess I gotta wait another year..By the way are you Korean? I was "made" in Korea too lol

I called the admissions office, didn't get to talk to Dr. Coleman but sadly that's what they told me.
and yes, I'm Korean 🙂

Dr. Coleman said that I'm alternate listed.. I guess I just gotta hope that a lot of accepted people drop out..lol

I got my alternate pool letter in the mail Saturday also 'tall'. If history serves true, everyone accepted so far will attend, but fingers crossed, right? Never know what could happen...

I'm in the alternate pool, as well. Wonder how many of us there are?

Dr. Coleman also told me that I was in the alternate pool; however, I haven't received a letter yet. Is anyone else in the same boat as me, or know what that might mean?

Also, Luzern, Tall, Metrowarrior, and Jumpinin- when did yall receive your alternate letter? When was you guy's interview? Any of y'all from Arkansas?

Does anyone know if they have sent rejection letters out yet?

So I'm planning on attending UT in 2011 and I was wondering about the tooth collection packet - my dad is a dentist and can start collecting teeth for me now if needed, or will I have plenty of time once I get accepted so I shouldn't worry about it now? Thanks.

PS: I was wondering if it'd be possible to see the questions we're supposed to answer for the application to UT? I'd like to get started early (before June 1st) on gathering all the required info, on preparing for any essays, etc. Apparently the application is different than the AADSAS, so I'm lost as to what to prepare for. Any help?

Although TN does not use AADSAS, the information they require is basically the same. They require a 4,500 character essay (without spaces) So basically your PS with an added paragraph. You also have to type in all your awards, honors, EC's, research, job history in a giant space. So work on organizing that in an outline form. Unlike AADSAS, you have to organize it yourself. TN doesn't require supplementary questions in their application. Everything else is simple and you can fill out as you go along. As for the teeth, wait for an acceptance letter before you start collecting.

NeedADentist - I got my alternate pool letter the Saturday before 4-18, and I am a TN resident.

Has anyone in the same situation called Dr. Coleman to see if everyone in the class has accepted/put down a deposit/etc? I know it's possible for someone to drop out up until the first day of classes, but it's very unlikely. Would love to get that call during the week so I can cancel Summer science classes at UofM!

I also got my alternate letter April 17th and I am a TN resident. I haven't called for any more information. I have no idea how many alternates are chosen or what the chances of a spot opening up are. Just hoping something opens up.

Hi everyone!! Congrats to those accepted and best of luck to those in waiting. UT is my first choice in dental school, as I am a TN resident.

What kinds of GPA and DAT scores have you all had? Right now, I have a cGPA of 3.43 and a sGPA of 3.35. I will be taking the DAT in 3 weeks. Thanks! 😎

This should some insight. TN focuses more on GPA rather than DAT as the DAT is just one test (specifically sGPA). But you still want to shoot for at least an 18. Good luck on the DAT.

Can someone please define what the "preprofessional evaluation" is? Thanks!

"Selection is based upon academic performance in undergraduate studies, DAT scores, personal characteristics, leadership experience, community awareness, preprofessional evaluation and the personal interview."

Letters of Recommendation

Actually its a form filled out by the pre-health advisor of the applicant's school. I was admitted and have yet to turn mine in - let that be an indicator of its importance.

I graduated with a BS in Biology 5 years ago and don't have any kind of form filled out by the pre-health advisory committee. How strict is UT Memphis about this? Can I have letters from individual science professors instead?

I never turned a form like that in and received an interview without question. I turned in individuals, which my advisor compiled into one letter. But no evaluation form was submitted with my LOR's.

Yeah if you sign into the online application there's a link to 'Forms' that you click on to access the form for Pre-professional evaluation. You can either have your advisor fill it out or three professors (I think at leaset 2 have to be science, maybe all 3) each fill one out. Like I said I've already gotten in without it or any letters of recommendation (except for the dentist I shadowed).

On a different thread a user named BillytheEchidna said about UT's interviews that "The interview is closed-file, which means they won't know your grades until afterward." I recently spoke with a D2 (soon to be D3) and he said at his interview everyone from the AdCom had copies of his PS with them. So is the interview closed-file except for the PS? Thanks.

Great question. Also, what is the format for the personal statement for UT? Word count, content, etc.?

Coleman said to "keep it short and to the point" at my interview, which was convenient because everyone had already written it by then. And yeah, they asked me questions about how I chose my major, economics, but no questions about grades, scores, etc. So maybe they have access to everything but grades?

FreeFallin - post #64 might be of some help: "They require a 4,500 character essay (without spaces) So basically your PS with an added paragraph."

Anyone heard about how strict UT is about us meeting ALL the requirements to be considered an "in-state" resident? i.e. are they lenient if you filed a tax return in another state instead of TN, etc and is it common for the appeals committee to make exceptions?

Hey! Has anyone who is an alternate heard that they got accepted? Or, does anyone know of any alternates that are now accepted for the entering class for 2010?

I'm an alternate and haven't been accepted. I am very curious to see if any alternates have heard anything yet too!

Have any of you alternates asked Dr. Coleman if all the accepted students have given deposits/accepted their positions at UT?

About 3 weeks ago, we all got an email about 3 alternates that will be in the new class, so we can pick or repick our little sib.

I'd say that's bad news for us folks on here who are alternates hoping for a spot...

I want that spot, as I assume every other alternate does as well! QK1984- Are the alternate spots available now TN residents, AR residens, or other out of state residents spots?

I am an alternate for this upcoming fall as well!

Qk- I am also interested in the slots that have recently become available. Do you know if they are all for TN residents? Or are some for AR or other out-of-state- residents? Also, do you know anything about UT ranks their alternates? Thanks for your help!

All 2 spots were for TN and 1 out of state. Our vice president sent us the names/info of the accepted alternates in that email and 2 of them from TN and 1 from MS.

I don't really know how they rank the alternates. They won't tell us how many spots are available. They'll only tell us after the alternates are accepted and that's how we find out how many spots were for TN, AR, or out of state (through their info that's provided for us in the email).

Good luck to everyone!
