Hey

I'm from Louisiana and doing an away at Parkland in the Emergency Department in a few weeks. I was just wondering if I could get some imput from people who have been through that rotation.

What are the hours?
Any graveyard shifts?
How many shifts do you work?
How much autonomy is there?
I have heard good things and bad things about it. Any information would be great.

Also: The UT Southwestern ED sent me a list of hotels where I could stay:

Days Inn near Parkland
Wilson World (? never heard of this)
Sheraton @ Mockingbird
Bradford Homesuites

Any advice on any of these?

I can't comment on rotations, but I volunteer at Parkland and live north of Dallas.

Anything near Parkland may be scary at night, so I would probably avoid Days Inn. You could probably score some drugs w/o leaving the hotel parking lot though 😱

Never heard of Wilson World and have not been in the Sheraton. Depends on what part of Mockingbird it's located. Near Harry Hines would be mildly rough.

I think Bradford Homesuites is along I-35 just north of Parkland. Probably your best bet. There are some really good places to eat about on I-35 about 5-6 mi north of Parkland.

On Dallas driving: Don't impede traffic, it is either 75+ mph or 5 mph. Signal only when moving towards an opening (lane changes). Otherwise, the signal is just an invite to close the gap on you.

I always park in the garage attached to the hospital by skybridge. It is free for volunteers, hopefully to you also. Crossing the street can be hazardous to your health.

You will see everything in the Level 1 ED. Check out where JFK was pronounced, there is a small non-descript plaque with the date and "Original site of Trauma 1" in what is now the radiology department waiting area.

I was looking into doing an externship at UTSW as well and they sent me a brochure about their Medical Student Apartments nearby that you can rent furnished.

I'm a UTSW student. Haven't done the ER rotation, but would expect that you would have a lot of autonomy if its anything like the other rotations at our school. You will not park at Parkland, you will park at the med school, and cut through the builidings to Parkland. Pretty good deal compared to parking at other schools. Sorry, I don't know too much about the hotels in the area.

Thanks for the advice.

LOL. I will try to stay away from places too close to Parkland hospital.

The Bradford homesuites are 50-60 bucks a night. Not bad if I wasn't staying for 1 month.

I spoke to the ER secretary about places to stay and she reffered me to the list that she sent me. I was not aware of "furnished" apartments. I will try to look into that further. Maybe I should speak to someone in the student affairs office. 🙂

Thanks again!

I just had to laugh at your comment (which is so true). I am from Dallas but live in Miami (with the same driving conditions).

It's a small world, my brother teaches at U Miami. He avoids unecessary driving there, mentions what we said plus the "blue hair" factor.

That budget suites place looks great (for the price). Thanks for telling me about them.Do you remember if they have high speed internet access? 🙂 Guess that would be asking too much! 🙂

Anyways,
Thanks alot!

Budget Suites in Las Colinas!
That will be the first place I check out.

I would check out the housing that they have. While parkland is sketchy at night, its not terrible. I lived for years in what is now being called 'uptown' and the oaklawn area. I wouldn't stay at the hotels RIGHT on harry hines, but there are definately better places... as long as you stay inside LBJ or in irving/las colinas, your commute won't be bad. adn apparantly now the light rail is really easy to use from irving to the med center.

I would definatly recommend some of the restraunts in teh oak lawn area... If your not homophobic, you must try Hunkies for burgers..... there is also an Eatzi's for prepped food.

Drink beer at the Gingerman (close to UTSW). And believe it or not, they have amazing tamales. (although its been awhile since I was there...)

Oh yeah, you might want to opost this in the EM forum..there are several regulars that are at Parkland.
